Areca Legend pulls it off in F K Irani Trophy

  September 26 , 2019

Prasanna Kumar trained Areca Legend put in a speedy performance to trounce the opposition in the 1400 metres F K Irani Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 75 and above, the feature event of Thursday`s Mysore races. The fancied duo of Sakura and Merlot put up disappointing efforts which made the task of Areca Legend easy.

Sakura who had finished third to Merlot was backed to the exclusion of the rest, but the four-year-old filly has always proved a tricky customer, winning only when things fell in place. Sakura always likes to come from way off the pace and on several occasions, the effort has been too late to fetch the desired result. Imran Chisty took the fancied Areca Legend on a start to finish mission with Star of Thea in the chase while Merlot was in about the fourth or fifth position while Sakura was settled in the rear group. Areca Legend who enjoyed the uncontested lead came into the straight a few lengths clear of Star of Thea and managed to keep the lead without coming under pressure. Areca Legend had the race sewn up when Sakura made her late bid which was bound to prove futile. Thar of Thea stayed on to take the third position while Merlot who is expected to be retired shortly to the stud ran way below par to finish a poor fourth.

Faraz Arshad trained Louisiana bounced back to win a race after 287days getting a dream run along the rails. Darius Byramji trained Set To Win who had been an eye-catching second to Merlot was quoted at cramped odds to go one better but the favourite performed poorly, finishing a tame fourth. After Contributor led deep into the straight, Louisiana came into strong contention with a ground-saving effort along the rails and surged ahead. The progeny of Phoenix Tiger had enough legs to pull off a comfortable win over last start winner Turf Magic in the hands of apprentice jockey Nazerul Alam. Top Striker ran on to take the third position ahead of Set To Win who had a rough passage in the first furlong of the race and failed to pick up steam in the stretch and rallied late which could only fetch him the fourth position.

Trainer Warren Singh found an elusive winner through Speedster who had it easy in the 1400 metres Son of the Light Plate (Div I). The race had an open look about it with none of the runners having any reasonable form to recommend their credentials. Apprentice jockey Shamaz Shareef had the three-year-old filly Speedster lead from the start and the lesser fancied runner skipped away from favourite Grey Channel in the final furlong to win the race by a widening margin of three lengths. Sun Splash was third more than six lengths behind the runner-up. The lower division of the race went the way of Sharavanan trained Swiss Tiger who swamped the opposition. Swiss Tigress had gone down by a whisker to Honey Trap in her last outing. This time out, Swiss Tigress who raced in a handy second position, took charge approaching the final furlong and stretched away from last start winner Star Binder who ran on to take the second position ahead of Blackhawk.

Azhar Ali trained Brave Lady was backed to the exclusion of the rest in the 1600 metres Secunderabad Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Brave Lady chased Bold Move into the straight before shooting clear inside the final 350 metres for a handsome win. Flirting Eyes ran from a long way back to take the second position ahead of Fotogenic.

Rustic Sunrise from the stables of Vishal Yadav came in for one-sided support in the 1400 metres M D Appaya Memorial Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Arshad Alam brought Rustic Sunrise into contention in the final furlong even as Admiral Act and Good Earth were battling it out in front. Good Earth got the better of the front-running Admiral Act but closer home it was clear that Rustic Sunrise would overwhelm the five-year-old. Admiral Act stayed on to keep the third position. Monnappa trained Haloween`s Way had the best credentials to win the lower division of the race and was accorded the status of being a favourite. Greek Goddess went in front at breakneck speed before weakening approaching the final furlong. Perfect Legacy who was in the chase also failed to make an impression as Haloween`s Way warmed up to the task to finish with a rattle and win by a widening margin of four lengths over late rallying San Vinto and Lucky Pineapple.

Dinesh Pujar trained Space Ship won the concluding race of the day, the 1200 metres Abs Fabs Plate, a race for horses 20 to 45 with a comfortable start to finish dash. The lesser fancied runner enjoyed the uncontested lead and gave an arm-chair ride to victory to Chetan Gowda. The well-backed Scarlet Burning ran on late to edge out Praelector to get the runner-up position.
