Ambrosia has it easy in Stayers Trial Stakes

  January 30 , 2020

Sulaiman Attollahi trained Ambrosia had a walk in the park in the 2400 metres Stayers Trial Stakes, a terms race for four-year-olds and over, the feature event of Thursday`s Bangalore races. With the expected challenge from Secretive Force not materialising, Ambrosia led all the way and was not extended to win by a widening margin of three lengths over stablemate Angelino.

Ambrosia and Secretive Force were expected to battle it out and the market trend too indicated such a possibility. Trevor Patel took Ambrosia on a start to finish mission with Angelino in the chase followed by Treasure Striker and Secret Force. It was clear by the time the runners took the final turn that Secretive Force would not be a force to reckon with as he was in distress and was dropping back alarmingly. Ambrosio came into the straight clear of the rest and Trevor Patel could take it easy on the favourite as Angelino was plodding in the second position. Treasure Striker was third while Secretive Force finished more than a distance behind in the fourth position.

Velocidad from the stables of trainer Pradeep Annaiah who used to consistently find one better pulled off a thrilling win over last start winner Roma Victor in the 2000 metres Bull Temple Plate, a race for horses rated 60 and above. After Nanhipari led the field into the final 300 metres, Indian Pharaoh shot ahead but he was strongly challenged by Velocidad who got the upper hand in the next 100 metres. In the meanwhile, Roma Victor was brought into contention on the wide outside with a powerful burst of speed. Both Velocidad and Roma Victor went past the post locked together with the former prevailing by the proverbial whisker in the hands of jockey Y S Srinath. India Pharaoh weakened to finish third a length behind.

Narayana Gowda trained Depth Charge won the 1200 metres Shivanasamudra Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 45 to 65. Akita Pro and Royal Resolution were the market fancies but both disappointed. Depth Charge slipped into the lead along the rails taking over from pace-setter Side Winder at the top of the straight and stormed clear to win the race with a great deal of ease in the hands of apprentice jockey Raghu. Akita Pro edged past Side Winder to get the runner-up berth. Sahara was third with Royal Resolution finishing a tame fourth. Pradeep Annaiah trained Psychic Warrior who had run a suggestive second behind Cuban Pete in his last run finally entered the winner`s circle after a long wait of 1082 days in the lower division of the race. Srinath drove out Psychic Warrior to take charge on turning for home and the six-year-old son of Multidimensional stormed ahead and had no problem in keeping the challenge of Colonel Harty at bay. Alberetta ran on to finish third. Wings of Desire who was also in the betting ran poorly and finished a disappointing fifth.

Neil B Devaney trained Sainthood showed good improvement when getting the better of Casey in the closing strides of the race to win the 1600 metres Harangi Plate, a race for horses rated 15 to 35. Casey shot ahead in the final furlong but was overwhelmed close to home. Sainthood who was handily placed was angled out by Trevor Patel to go in chase of the front-runner inside the final 100 metres. Sainthood was able to measure the front-runner in the shadow of the post to land a quiet touch. My Vision ran on to take the third position ahead of favourite High Priestess who gave a timid performance.

Another Neil B Devaney trainee Hunters Gold who had gone winless for 454 days was backed with great conviction to win the 1100 metres Ullal Beach Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Hunters Gold led the field along the rails with Santorini Secret in hot pursuit followed by the rest. Inside the final furlong Hunters Gold was able to pull away from his pursuer and the six-year-old had enough cushion when Dontbreaktherules came up with a late flourish. Santorini Secret was third.

In a three-horse thriller, Dominic trained Songkran nosed out Amazonite and Charmaine to win the 1200 metres Jog Falls Plate, a race for horses rated 15 to 35. Inside the final furlong, Charmaine shot ahead with Amazonite along the rails and Songkran on the wide outside joining issue. The trio went past the post locked together with the stronger riding powers of Trevor Patel getting Songkran the nod from Amazonite by a nose with Charmaine another short head behind.
