Nisus edges out Mountain Lion in Juvenile Million

  February 14 , 2020

Prasanna Kumar trained Nisus fought out a stiff battle for supremacy before getting stronger close home to win the Gr 3 Bangalore Juvenile Million, a terms race for three-year-olds, the feature event of Friday`s Bangalore races. Jockey Sandesh had to stretch himself to the full to get Nisus to get the better of Mountain Lion inside the final 100 metres.

The Bishan Stud produce Nisus had recorded an impressive win in his last outing and based on that win, the progeny of Gusto was made a strong favourite ahead of another last start winner Mountain Lion. Trevor Patel took Mountain Lion on a start to finish mission with Nisus in the chase. Mountain Lion was not inclined to give up easily and Sandesh had to drive out the favourite aggressively to get the nod in the closing strides of the race. Cavallini was third more than three lengths adrift.

Lokanath trained Poseidon obliged huge expectations in the1400 metres Godolphin Barb Trophy, a race for horses rated 45 to 65. Poseidon was a rousing performer as a juvenile and had beaten the likes of New Creation who subsequently went on to win a classic. Poseidon hadn`t won for 601 days but his last run indicated that he was bouncing back to form. Poseidon was well backed though the favourite for the race was Ice Floe. Jockey Darshan kept Poseidon a handy second behind pace-setting Good Time Indeed with Ice Floe in proximity. Poseidon hit the front soon after turning for home. David Allan switched Ice Floe to the rails to get a clear run as Poseidon was shifting out but much to his chagrin, the front-runner rolled over to the rails forcing him to change course again. However, Poseidon was the better horse on the day and spared a length at the finish to Ice Floe. Whizzo was third ahead of the late rallying Piper Regina.

Newly licensed apprentice jockey Darshan Anthony had the first winner of his career when he guided the quietly fancied Big Boon to a thrilling win over Darahasini in the 1200 metres Dashmesh Stud Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 30 to 50. Darshan rode a neat race on the winner keeping him in the third position along the rails even as Simone did the front running. Inside the final furlong, Darshan was able to get Big Ben to take the lead along the rails and managed to keep him going to win by the proverbial whisker from the late rallying Darahasini. Singhsaab and Simone finished in close order. The odds on Aceros drifted out in the ring. Aceros was in contention till the final furlong but failed to find an extra gear and bowed out of contention timidly. Neil Darashah trained Lucky Isabella trounced the opposition in the lower division of the race with a start to finish dash winning by a margin of over two lengths. Harmonia was second ahead of Emidio while the heavily fancied Secretsuperstar could only finish a tame fourth.

Kishan Thomas trained Zehnaseeb was the medium of a smart gamble in the 1100 metres Classic Story Plate (Div II), a race for horses rated 15 to 35. Zehnaseeb was backed down from a higher quote to end up as a strong favourite. Annalease led the field from the start with Zehnaseeb in the chase. The latter overhauled the front-runner under the strong riding of T S Jodha in the final 300 metres and skipped clear to win by a margin of three lengths. Perfect King made a late dash to nose out Annalease to snatch the runner-up berth. Neil Devaney trained Gin Daisy recorded an encore easily tackling the opposition in the upper division of the race. Gin Daisy was backed down to strong favouritism close to race time. The market trend suggested that the other horse in serious betting was Perfectgoldenera. Gin Daisy was taken on a start to finish mission by jockey S John. The favourite came into the straight a couple of lengths clear of the rest and stretched away from the rest in the stretch to win with a measure of comfort from Chula Vista and Princess Pride. Perfectgoldenera could only finish a tame fourth.

The long wait of 573 days did not yield the desired result on Narayan Gowda trained Bazinga who found one better in Md Khan trained Turf Prospector in the 1600 metres Somanathapura Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Bazinga who chased Only Prince into the straight got the lead going into the final furlong but was found wanting when apprentice jockey Naveen Kumar brought Turf Prospector into contention with a powerful effort. The latter managed to edge past Bazinga in the shadow of the post. Noble Splendor who lost some ground at the start ran on to take the third position. Jockey Chetan Gowda who rode Bazinga put an objection against Naveen Kumar for interference but the same was overruled as it did not have substance.
