Field day for trainer Vijay Singh

By: Our Correspondent   December 1 , 2020

Trainer Vijay Singh has been dominating the Kolkata racing season year after year. He has been well patronized and his results are there for all to see. Judging by the runaway fashion that he has started the season with the help of some promising youngsters, the leading trainer is bound to dominate the season as he did on Tuesday. Vijay Singh literally swept the day`s card saddling five winners in the card of seven events. Among the bag of winners was the impressive three-year-old Speaking of Which progeny Supreme Legacy.

Supreme Legacy had recorded an impressive win last winter before the season ended abruptly in March due to the outbreak of COVID. Now back against a modest lot of backward lot of horses, Supreme Legacy put daylight between himself and the rest in the 1600 metres Kariba Handicap, a race for horses rated 41 to 66 , the day`s feature event. Jockey Suraj Narredu just had to stay in the saddle and do the steering job when guiding the money back favourite to a distance win over aptly named Apna Time Aayega and Kimaya. The others should get their turn during the season when such giants are not in the fray. Supreme Legacy should be a serious prospect in the Guineas.

Vijay Singh`s day started on a winning note with last start winner Ghost who had won at the expense of the more fancied stablemate on the last occasion, trounced the opposition this time out. Jockey Hindu Singh alerted his horse to the task at the top of the straight and the progeny of Win Legend left the field stranded, winning by a widening margin of nine lengths over Seasky who many considered as capable of putting up a big show. Popcorn was more than six lengths adrift of the runner-up while the rest finished dismally way down the field.

The speedy Lesrel was well backed to win in the 1200 metres Hong Kong Jockey Club Trophy, a race for horses rated 81 and above, the day`s feature event. Suraj Narredu had it easy on the Vijay Singh trainee Lesrel who cruised past the front-running Amorous White down the final furlong to win with a great deal of ease from Perpetual Winning. Amorous White held off Sweet Music to keep the third position. Sweet Music should get his turn over extended trips as all his six wins have been over distances beyond six furlongs. Castlebridge who had won last week after finding the winning post elusive for two years did not run to expectations.

James McKeown, who has made a big mark on the national scene with the back to back Indian Invitation Turf Cup victories, had a good winner through Sirona at nourishing odds in the Fly Like The Wind Handicap, a race for three-year-olds in the lowest category. Sirona who is bred as a full sister to the well-performed Roll Call, was not in strong betting as many believed that she needed a race run to get into her own. Also, the six-furlong trip was reckoned to be sharp. However, all these did not matter in the end. Though Sirona was at the rear the group till turning for home, the filly had the class and the speed to quicken along the rails to provide jockey Mahesh with a comfortable win. Sirona won pulling up and looks like a good type of a youngster. Om Shanti who had the benefit of a race run ran on to take the second position ahead of another debutant Lakmos who should strip fitter after this run.

The fourth race of the day, the 1200 metres Deep Water Blues Handicap, a race for horses rated 41 to 66, was delayed due to a false start. Both Astoria and Dil Mangey More were affected by the false start with jockey Hindu Singh coming a cropper on Astoria resulting in him not riding in the rest of the races. The final bend at the Kokata track could be tricky for those not familiar because invariably there could be a problem if the horses don`t shoot through with a brisk turn of foot if the jockey elects to make a ground-saving effort. Jockey Nikhil Naidu chose to bring the Vijay Singh trainee Hukumat the shortest way home from about the sixth position and the lesser fancied runner showed good alacrity to quicken well and spurt clear of the rest to win by a comfortable margin of three lengths. Glorious Leaps was second ahead of Across The Seas. Frieze who was in the betting faded out after being prominent while favourite Chephirah was a disappointing last.

Javiant, also from the stables of Vijay Singh, was well backed to win the 1400 metres Silver Beauty Handicap, a race for horses rated 61 to 86. Suraj Narredu took Javiant on a start to finish mission and dictated a comfortable pace before the progeny of Win Legend had the race sewn up a long way from home. Exception who needs more ground than the seven furlongs that she was asked to essay, came from the rear of the field to be a noteworthy second ahead of Rosina who was slightly held up while being put on top gear by her jockey Trevor Patel.

Trainer Christopher Alford led in a winner through long shot Guitar Girl who swamped the opposition in the 1100 metres Arabian Rose Handicap, a race for horses rated 21 to 46. Guitar Girl showed up on the wide outside inside the final 350 metres and sped away from the rest to win by a widening margin of four lengths in the hands of jockey Nikhil Naidu. Berluti who was handily placed did not quicken enough and was overwhelmed close to home by Krishaa`s Choice who finished second best. Essos who had a lot of faithful supporters in betting put up a dismal show after racing up with the field until the top of the straight.
