Violin has it easy in the 1000 Guineas

By: Goldie Boy   December 12 , 2020

The Southern challenger, Violin, lived up to her enterprising trainer Neil Darashah`s ambitious plans when the Phoenix Tower-Nojoom daughter notched up the targeted Classic, the 1,600m Calcutta 1,000 Guineas on Saturday. Jockey Y.S. Srinath gave the 4/1 shot a gem of a ride to beat the local darling and the Vijay Singh-trained Silver Bracelet (Suraj Narredu) -- a hot-favourite and unbeaten in her career`s four starts.

Honestly speaking, bloodlines of Silver Bracelet – Win Legend out of Silver Profile – boasted of being a better miler, compared to Violin`s but it turned out to be the other way round. A near-three week break between the Guineas` and the preparatory run may have been inadequate for light-framed public choice against the stoutly-made winner.

The outcome of the Guineas, however, augurs well for the third-placed Apsara Star (Neeraj Rawal), another very light-framed filly from trainer James McKeown`s stable. Also a Win Legend daughter, Apsara Star was impressive in defeat. Although there was no hard-luck story in the race she nearly toppled the favourite, by a whisker. She is going to be a live force in the Ladies` Derby, over 2,400 meters.

Verdicts were, however, close in the afternoon`s seven-event card. The setting did suit trainer Vijay Singh but not Suraj Narredu who just about managed to notch-up the verdict in favour Moskova, beating the start-to-finishing Manvendra Singh`s filly, Kimaya (Hindu) in the concluding event, the 1,600m Birthday Girl Handicap.

Suraj-Vijay`s other potential ride, Inca, an even-money favourite in the 1,600m Fame Star Handicap, failed narrowly under similar circumstances as the stable-mate, Arjuna (Hindu) just about lasted out to keep the lead and secure the photo-verdict.

Luck did fail Manvendra`s Kimaya but the trainer`s 6/1 chance, Mystic Star (Dhanu Deora) had cashed in on the day`s start-to-finish trend. The three-year-old was, however, lucky as Hindu on Vijay`s Daring Heart was a trifle late in making his charge from the wrong end of the field and apprentice P. Vikram atop, C. Alford`s Guitar Girl, needed to be a little more enterprising in the saddle. It was a close call but Mystic Star had the last laugh.

The early afternoon belonged to another apprentice, Sujit Pawan, who continued to make good improvement in the saddle. Paswan notched up a quick double, and his two winners – Javed Khan`s Ahinka, in the Cradle of The Deep Handicap, and Daniel David`s ageing sprinter, Philadelphia, in the Sholay Handicap were treats to watch. Incidentally, each of the two wins was gained from jaws of defeat against seasoned jockeys like Akshay Kumar (Angel Grace), and Deora (Estrella Star).

Akshay started his day on Aashay Doctor`s Starofhollywood who cruised home making every post of the 1,400m Fair Haven Handicap a winning won.
