Star Superior wins a thriller

By: Goldie Boy   December 26 , 2020

Trainer Rajesh Narredu`s champion galloper, Star Superior (Suraj Narredu-up) was far from his brilliant self while having a narrow measure of the opposition in the prestigious event the 1,600m D. Khaitan Memorial Calcutta Gold Cup at the city Races on Saturday. The Indian Derby winner, who had also scored back-to-back races in Kolkata last season, had to fight, perhaps, the toughest battle of his career to beat the talented pair of Psychic Force (Arshad Alam) and the last season`s local Derby winner, Trafalgar (Y.S. Srinath), not to mention Awesome One, a recent migrant from western India, who placed a creditable fourth, just about maintaining social distance, between the fighting trio and himself. Suraj, however, went on to add three more winners to his day`s tally to match his score with Vijay`s quadruple of wins.

Star Superior was no doubt a bit rusty after 10 months of lay off while those involved in the close contest were benefitted by outings. The winner, in fact, failed to produce his customary run of being up with the field, or going to the front right from 600m marker. The Excellent Art son was under much pressure, turning for home but responded magnificently in the final 150m to snatch the issue.

Earlier in the day, Suraj had to secure the 2,000m Army Cup`s verdict in the Stewards` room. Riding almost from the front -- the 9/4 chance, Inca, Suraj offered a wide rail-side opening to Shivalik Sight (app Rupal Singh) who quickly grabbed the opportunity to shoot through. Although marginally ahead of the long time front running Inca, the new leader cut across as he shifted out -- inside the final furlong. As a result of this Inca had to switch the course, towards rails, in order to avoid being sandwiched between the new leader and the 7/10 favourite, Rosina (Akshay Kumar), who was close behind. The final verdict recorded by Shivalik Sight and Inca was three-parts of a length and looked like a 50-50 chance but stewards were unanimous about their decision to award the race to Inca.

Trainer Vijay Singh`s Excelsior was simply brilliant on her way to winning the 1,600m Ansbach Handicap. Almost trailing the field, till turning for home, jockey Hindu Singh brought the Whatsthescript daughter with an electrifying run to leave the field cold. A lot more is expected from the filly in the coming weeks.

Trainer Aashay Doctor`s three-year-old colt, Lakmos (Neeraj Rawal) was another one who impressed in his winning effort in the 1,200m Accalia Handicap. Held back until turning for home, the New Famous-Firefoot colt, made his winning bid on the wide out of the field. The colt accelerated went on to treat the field with total disregard. Needless to say that he may win again.

Vijay`s 16/10 favourite Cletus (Suraj), too, made impressive debut in the baby race, the 1,200m Aayush Plate, which David Livingston colt won from the start. The second placed Lady Laurane who was always in chase of the winner, though out-classed by over five lengths, may have needed the run.
Trainer Vikash Jaiswal pulled off a smart win in the day`s opener, Flying Glance Handicap, when his 5/1 shot, Around The World (K. Sai Kumar) took the measure of Vijay`s start-to-finishing debutante, Little Finger (Hindu). Around The World galloped close behind the even-money favourite but a spirited effort by the winner, inside the final furlong, sealed the issue.

The concluding event witnessed Vijay`s hot-favourite, Daring Heart (Suraj) completing the formality of winning the Snow Forest Handicap with a degree of ease. The winner was left to do much until the home straight but once put in to the motion the 4/10 favourite bisected the front running Despacito (Y.S. Srinath) and Vareggio (B. Mahesh) to sail past to a four-length victory.
