Trainer Raunak Banerhi’s five-year-old horse, Mr Gorgeous (Christopher Alford-up) had an easy measure of the aging Commander (Neeraj Rawal), from Malesh Narredu’s stable, on his way to winning the 1,600m Elusive Pimpernel Cup, Saturday’s feature event. The afternoon also witnessed Alford driving home trainer Manvendra Singh’s speedy youngster, Fortune Express -- carrying his Herculean impost of 61kg -- to an easy victory in the Crystal Man Plate.

Goergeous was never under pressure to perform, once the even-money favourite, took over the running from the long time leader, Torino. The last named shortened his strides inside the last furlong. Command, though covered much ground, from the wrong-end of the six-horse field, in the final 300m, was, however, hard-pressed for the second berth, edging out Captain Cook who always raced in close proximity of the winner.

Alford relied on the speed of Fortune Express who was ridden with controlled aggression, with Wimbledon and Lady Two in tow. The 6/10 hot favourite went about his task of winning with Alford literally enjoying an armchair-ride, leaving Lady Two to exercise her authority over Wimbledon.

Adhirajsingh’s Song And Dancer (Hindu Singh), however, delivered the good, albeit at fancy odds, in the 1,400m Mica Empress Handicap. Ridden off the pace as trainers Raunak’s King’s Crown (Alford), Vijay Singh’s Fury (Dashrath) and Manvandra’s (Jorawar Singh) made most of the running. Stand And Dance also pounced on the tiring leaders, inside the last 200ms to score a decisive victory.

Long knife was, however, out in the 1,200m Alternator Cup; which witnessed trainer Shafiq Khan’s Flanker (apprentice Ranidan Singh) taking the monopolised route of coming from the wrong-end of the field to win. The horses easily beat Bharath Singh’s charge, Leopard Creek (Dashrath), who was being hailed as a winner.

Early in the day, Bharath saddled Forest Dune (Shailesh Shinde) to an easy victory over Avilome Vilome in the day’s opener, the 1,100m Orange William Handicap, which he won from Javed Khan’s Avilome Vilome (apprentice P. Vikram).

The afternoon concluded with the victory of another rank-outsider, Romantic Society (Azharuddin). Ridden well in check, the Vijay Singh-trained horse came with an electrifying run to beat Heloconia (Hindu Singh) and Mizuno (Ashhad Asbar) – also friendless runners who were ridden in check.
