Serjeant At Arms proves that he is exceptional

Sulaiman Attaollahi trained Serjeant At Arms yet again displayed his exceptional ability when winning the Gr 2 BTC Anniversary Cup, a rich terms race for four-year-olds and over, fractionally bettering the course record by clocking one minute 23.23 seconds on Saturday. The progeny of Ikhtyar out of Rahy’s Serenade thus extended his unbeaten winning streak on the Bangalore track with consummate ease despite conceding weight to all his adversaries.

Nothing has deterred Serjeant At Arms who remains invincible over trips up to a mile. Though he hadn’t run over seven furlongs for a very long time and was coming back in distance, that did not prevent him from getting into full flight in the final furlong to storm past Multitude to win in resplendent style. Jockey Sandesh raced Serjeant At Arms in about the fifth position, unperturbed by the frenetic pace set by Mickey Mouse. Accolade, Fire Glow and Multitude were ahead of Serjeant At Arms. Rounding the final turn, Accolade seemed to be travelling well but when the pressure was applied, he couldn’t quicken. Multitude then surged ahead and was soon joined by Serjeant At Arms who after a brief duel, went clear to win by a comfortable margin of over two lengths. Bold Command ran on from behind to claim the third place. The rest of the runners were totally eclipsed by the brilliance of Serjeant At Arms who maintain his winning run if he remains free from physical niggles.

Hyderabad challenger Lady In Lace slammed the opposition in the richly endowed Nawab M Arshad Ali Khan Memorial Cup, a seven furlong terms race for three-year-olds. Lady In Lace who had recorded a smashing win last time out was well fancied to strike despite conceding weight to her contemporaries. Lady Barrington who was running after a long layoff was more preferred than the rest. Kambaku took over the running midway through the race from Occitan even as Lady Barrington was eased in third position ahead of Lady In Lace. Srinath had Lady In Lace improve briskly on the outside of the front-runners and was ready to take over the running with two furlongs left in the race. Lady In Lace accelerated tremendously and was hailed a winner long way from home. Occitan finished on well to edge past Kambaku for the third place. That’s My Class who finished fourth should strike as soon as he gets back to Hyderabad. Lady Barrington was a disappointing seventh.

Pradeep Annaiah trained Arvak was always running out of ground over shorter trips but the mile-long trip in the K N Guruswamy Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 45 to 65, suited the progeny of Phoenix Tower fine. The well fancied Sporting Pleasure was poised to strike when he shot into the lead in the final furlong but faltered when Arvak essayed a strong challenge. Hartnell saved place money.

Arjun Mangalorkar trained Fair Warning looked a cut above the rest in the1200 metres Adler Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 15 to 35 and predictably he was quoted at miserly odds. Jockey John had no problem in guiding the favourite to an easy win over the only visible challenger Kings Son who ended up chasing his shadow. I Smile was a long way third. Trainer Azhar Ali brought off a good touch on Duke of Norfolk in the lower division of the race. The progeny of Mull of Kintyre came in for spirited betting which resulted in his odds coming down from a higher quote. Jockey Anjar Alam who rarely finds winners coming his way, had the fancied runner quickly in front from the outside draw. Duke of Norfolk enjoyed a healthy lead all through the race to win with ease from Candice and Summer Star. Ultimate Power performed poorly as a favourite.

The1600 metres Mystical Million, a race for maiden three-year-olds, had a very competitive look about it but despite this perception, Goshawk ended up being a strong favourite. In the event, the got-abroad gelding ran poorly, being out of contention well before the race came to the boil. Castanea who had run a fair race in the Fillies Championship, came into strong contention in the final furlong when she got the better of Implicit Trust and bounced ahead. Automatic came up with a late rally but much to his chagrin, found the Prasanna Kumar trainee reach the safety of the winning post.

Arjun Mangalorkar had a double for the day as the lesser fancied Silver Legend shot ahead with about 200 metres left in the race and easily staved off the challenge of Carolina to win the 1400 metres R M Puttanna Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 30 to 50. Favourite Buscadero was sighted on the horizon long after the race had gone beyond his reach.

Azhar Ali had a long-priced winner through Brave Girl who recorded an encore with a resolute performance in the 1600 metres Indian Pattern Committee Cup, a race for horses in the lowest class. Brave Girl made swift progress from the back of the field and showed up on the wide outside and had no problem in recording an easy win. One To Note was second ahead of Captain Calm who nosed out Granada for the third place.
