Bezan Chenoy trained St Andrews asserted his superiority by outclassing a modest lot of horses in the 1200 metres Amazing Grace Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of the seven-event card that was gone through on Saturday. The results of the racing were confined to the horses which were in the betting either as first or second favourites.

Jockey Imran Khan took St Andrews on a start to finish mission. Th progeny of Phoenix Tower enjoyed an uncontested lead in front and shook off the challenge of Harvey who was seen in action after missing the entire Mumbai season. The more seasoned Brynhill ran on to finish second ahead of Harvey while the other two runners in the fray were not capable of making a mark against more accomplished performers.

Sandesh drove out Hoshidar Daji trained Simon Says to a resolute win in the 2000 metres Storm Tracker Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Favourite Lord of the Sea, led from the start even as Sandesh eased Simon Says in the rear position. Lord of the Sea came into the straight with a handy lead but Simon Says who was fitter because of the benefit of a winning run covered the leeway swiftly on the wide outside as soon as entering the straight and easily collared the front-runner for a comfortable win. Sussex Pride was the best of the beaten brigade by finishing third.

Daffodil had recorded a narrow win in a tight finish over Texas Gold and Forest Fairy in her run at Mumbai. And prior to that, she had run fourth to Mauritania in good company at Bangalore. Both Texas Gold and Forest Fairy had recorded impressive wins in their next outing which enhanced the credentials of Daffodil a great deal. The short price offered on her was justified. Neeraj Rawal kept Daffodil in a handy position before moving around the field at the final bend and then cruising past the front-running bunch for a ridiculously easy win. Vitesse who had raced ahead of the pack stayed on to take the second position ahead of late-rallying Zanzibar. Godsent ran too poorly for comfort, racing in front and packing up without a fight when the others swooped on him.

Sandesh who these days had been guilty of taking things too easy by trying to come from way off the pace perhaps may have learnt a lesson or two from his follies as he was very alert to the task on Dibaba in the 1400 metres Star Trainer Plate, a race for horses in the lowest class. Time For Life who was the favourite lead in earnest and seemed to be shaping well in the straight. However, an aggressive effort from Sandesh ensured that the lesser fancied runner covered the leeway just in time to get past the front-running favourite before the post. Smoky Haze was third.

First-timer Albareto from trainer S S Shah’s ward came in for strong support to win the 1200 metres Supreme Star Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds. The favourite showed his inexperience and failed to race at an even keel. Lady Almeda led the field with lesser fancied Gazino in a handy second position ahead of Albareto. Rounding the final turn, Gazino smoothly cruised past the front-runner and stretched away for an emphatic win over late finishing Anniversary Girl. Moonshine was third ahead of poorly performed favourite.

Last outing winner God’s Own led from the start and held off the late rally of strongly fancied Heroine to win the 1000 metres Beyond Belief Plate, a race for three-year-olds. Oracle who was the favourite, failed to show any spark and was reconciled to defeat even before the race came to the boil. Jockey Dashrath Singh rode the winner trained by Narendra Lagad whose fort is Pune.

Chouhan who had a double for the day had booted home We Break The Rules to a hard-fought win over Orion’s Belt in the 1400 metres Rajasthan Royals Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46 in the day’s opener. Orion’s Belt who led from the start was not inclined to give up easily and fought on resolutely before We Break The Rules managed to forge ahead in the dying moments of the race. Favourite Turning Point cut an erratic course under pressure and finished third.
