Pesi Shroff-trained Manifold who was running after a longish absence from the track did just enough to win the 1400 metres Maharaja Sir Pratapsingh Gaekwad Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 to 86, the feature event of Mumbai races held on Friday evening. The Bangalore Derby winner made light of the sharpness of the trip as she had a good lung-opener for the ensuing classics.

The quality of the win recorded by Manifold may not have impressed many but then the daughter of Multidimensional was running over a sharp trip. Her forte is her ability to get longer trips rather than these sharp distances. Jockey Neeraj Rawal drove out Manifold to first get past the pace-setting Nelsons Blood in the final furlong and then staved off the flourish of Themis with a measure of comfort. The Indian 1000 Guineas will be highly competitive as the presence of Ruffina and Lady In Lace is sure to add lustre to the event.

Vishal Gaikwad trained Shamwari completed a hat-trick of wins by easily beating owner-mate Wise Child to win the 1000 metres Kiara Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. The presence of Wise Child with Trevor Patel astride ensured that Shamwari did not run at cramped odds. Alpine Express showed the way before Shamwari measured the front-runner approaching the final furlong. Though Wide Child posed a question or two to the favourite, the hat-tricker answered in the affirmative to win quite capably. Double Nine and Loire were not far from the runner up.

Vishal had a double for the day as first-timer Intrepid proved very superior in the 1200 metres Excalibur By Nahar Trophy, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Tenerife, Rincon and My Precious had their share of supporters. In the race itself, Intrepid who graced the wrong end of the field till turning for home, showed up on the wide outside with a powerful effort and easily overhauled the front-runners for an easy win. The well-bred daughter of Intense Focus can repeat. Arc Shine who has been hitting the board consistently put up a semblance of a challenge before once again getting the familiar berth of second position. Ace Two Three was third. The fancied trio were not seen to have any chance in the race as they struggled to cope with the pace.

The 1400 metres Great Guns Plate (Div I), a race for horses in the lowest category looked like a minefield with the surface form being of no consequence in determining the possible winners. The race was won by Jeena who made a successful start to finish bid. The fancied Dusky Siren warmed up to the task rather too late in the day and just about managed to edge out Xoxo for the runner-up berth. For the record, the last named was the favourite. The lower division of the race too was contested by horses with unknown potential because whatever they had was not shown on the race track. In a race of this nature, a horse which attracts disproportionate betting compared to the known form invariably wins because they tend to be the unexploited ones. As such, the sustained thrust of betting on Adhiraj Jodha trained Dragonmoss was not misplaced. The favourite came up with a good burst of speed from the rear position with about 300 metres left in the race and bounced clear. The three-year-old gelding won quite well despite drifting out of a straight course in the final 100 metres. Star Ace nosed out Goldsmith to get the runner-up berth.

Dallas Todywalla trained Zanara who had failed to perform to expectations in the Pune Derby was presented with a modest lot of opponents in the 1600 metres Star Admiral Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Trevor had Zanara lead all the way and the favourite toyed with the opposition to check in well clear of Grand Vitesse and Pacific Dunes.

Jockey Neeraj Rawal had to exert himself to the maximum on Philadelphia to get the better of Rare Silver virtually in the closing stride of the race to win the 1200 metres Grand Passion Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Rare Silver appeared to have enough cushion to win the race when Philadelphia began to make her charge. However, the front-runner failed in the end as the finishing thrust of Philadelphia saw her snatch a thrilling win. Furiosa was third.
