Malesh Narredu trained Pioneer recorded a decisive win in the 1400 metres Gr 2 Breeders’ Produce Stakes, a terms race for three-year-olds, the feature event of Saturday’s Mumbai races. Favourite Adjudicate who was also from the same stable, played truant, beaten when the race came to the boil surrendering too meekly for comfort. The abject surrender of Adjudicate paved the way for the success of stablemate while Mozart was a close third.

The lesser fancied runner winning at the expense of stablemates is repeating with irritating regularity. Punters are also a confused lot, but the big stables are not helping their cause by creating further confusion as to their intention by entering two good horses. It is not always the best that wins making things even more confounding for the punters. Adjudicate who had won in brilliant fashion at Kolkata was widely supported to win as the victory of Multidimensional in his last run was simply outstanding.

No hopper Kanchanjunga set the pace with Adjudicate settled in second position ahead of Pioneer and the rest. Mozart was in the rear group Adjudicate overhauled the front-runner with effortless ease and shaped to skip clear of the field. However, the patented burst of speed was not visible as he began to falter. The hard-driven Pioneer began to gain ground with a strong effort and eventually surged ahead to record a comfortable win. Mozart came up with a big run on the wide outside but couldn’t sustain the brilliance but did just enough to put his head in front ahead of favourite Adjudicate whose run was true bad to be true.

The Gr 3 R N Kanga Gold Trophy, a terms race for four-year-olds and over had a very open look about it as none of the contestants had proved their mettle on a consistent basis. They had taken turns to do their best and as such, picking any horse as having outstanding chance was fraught with risk. The ever-unreliable Supreme General was made the favourite as he had won over a mile and then ran a noteworthy second behind Ruffina in the next outing. There were a few horses from trainer Pesi’s yard and since all of them were accomplished performers at one time or the other, it was difficult guess as to who would get their turn. In the end, Your Royal Majesty who had never won a race over a mile in his 34 outings, surprised the field with a strong performance. Your Royal Majesty shot into the lead in the final furlong after overhauling the front-running B Fifty Two and charged home. The seven-year-old easily held off the late threat of Costa Del Sol to land the spoils. New England ran on well towards the close to occupy the third slot. One could not spot where Supreme General was lost.

Pesi Shroff trained Cambridge had changed hands though he still ran in the colours of Dr Vijay Mallya. He had the best credentials to win but with other horses like Star Counsellor attracting betting, the focus of punters was distributed. Star Counsellor led the field into the straight and when the time came for him to quicken, he flopped miserably and eventually finished last. Cambridge produced a scintillating burst of speed from way off the pace and had the race sewn up long way from home. Uncle Scrooge made a late dash to take the second place ahead of Summer Rays.

Imtiaz Sait trained Gloriosus went one better this time by easily claiming the 1800 metres Ramaswamy Million, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Gloriosus rallied well along the rails to shoot clear in the final furlong to win from favourite Costa Brava. Auburn flattered to deceive even losing the third place to Sussex Pride by a whisker. Auburn reportedly burst her blood vessels.

Noshir Cama trained Artus who had let down expectations last time out, won the 1800 metres Kingfisher Million, a race for horses in he lowest category quite easily. Artus shot ahead on turning for home and was not unduly pressed by Finest Moment en route to his victory. Dazzling Eyes ran on to finish third.

Dolphin had been a let down last time out as a favourite but that run suggested that the five-year-old mare was spot on for the 1000 metres Kingfisher Ultra Sundowner Million, a race for horses in the lowest category. Dolphin readily obliged such an expectation by getting a stranglehold over the rest in the final furlong and won with a measure of comfort from Blazing Steps and Cherry Blossom.

S N Joshi had a winner perhaps after waiting for an eternity as Arc Shine who had the habit of finding one better on several occasions when she looked capable of winning, finally got her act right to edge out Tenerife to win the 1200 metres Adda52.com Poker Million, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Democrat was third.
