Rajesh Narredu trained Star Superior proved that he is one of the giants among the three-year-olds that are currently racing at this centre by steamrolling a quality field in the 1400 metres Youngsters Million, a terms race for three-year-olds, the feature event of the races held on Saturday at Bangalore. The Colts Championship will be like a match race between him and Sir Cecil will hold exciting possibilities.

Star Superior had smashed a field over a mile-long trip at Mumbai in a graded race and that run spoke volumes for the capability of this progeny of Excellent Art. Despite many horses boasting of commendable performances to back their claims, the bookmakers were not prepared to be generous in their quote on Star Superior. Their belief in the big made Star Superior was well justified.

Hyderabad contender Super Dart set a good pace with Star Superior in a handy second position along the rails with Pioneer making a swift progress from the outside draw to race in a line. Athenaeus was in mid-field while another Hyderabad challenger Rikki Tikki Tavi was in the rear group. Star Superior was travelling powerfully into the straight and he was only waiting for the command from his pilot Suraj Narredu to change gears. The moment the jockey asked him to go, it was all over bar the shouting. Star Superior bounced clear and, in a trice, established a huge lead. He was eased up a long way from home but still won by a widening margin of five lengths over Rikki Tikki Tavi who ran on well towards the close to take the position ahead of Athenaeus. Super Dart managed to keep the fourth position from Mumbai challenger Oomph. Pioneer had his share of supporters to put up a good show, but he packed up after being prominent till the homestretch.

Arjun Mangalorkar trained Mea Culpa made a winning debut in the 1200 metres Prince Khartoum Trophy, a race for maiden three-year-olds, winning by a nose over The Invader in a thrilling finish. The strong favourite for the race Velocidad was troublesome at the gates and was withdrawn from the fray. Tequila Tornado led the field into the straight before weakening. Long shot The Invader shot through on the centre of the track to raise visions of a big upset. Mea Culpa shadowed the long shot with Most Welcome also making significant progress in the final furlong. Mea Culpa drifted out under pressure and slightly inconveniencing the progress of Most Welcome but jockey Neeraj Rawal held his nerves and drove out the lesser fancied runner to nose out The Invader in the final stride of the race. Most Welcome was third while Gerontocrat who was at the rear end till approaching the final bend, made remarkable progress along the rails to be a suggestive fourth. Supernormal flattered to deceive after being well up with the pace. Meritorious was slowly off from the gates and raced in distress. Jockey Imran Khan stopped riding within the first furlong.

Prasanna Kumar trained Corybantic recorded an emphatic win in the1600 metres V T Velu Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 30 to 50. The lesser fancied runner raced a handy second behind pace-setting Cantabria. Jockey Kuldeep Singh got busy on Corybantic approaching the final bend and pushed the progeny of Excellent Art to take charge. Corybantic responded well and swiftly assumed command and stretched away for a facile win over Nitromax who was in futile chase of the winner. Fresh Start got the third place ahead of Golden Success while Del Porto failed to make an impression.

Neil Devaney trained San Bernardino produced a winning gallop in the final furlong to nail the favourite Spirit of London to land the spoils in the Mamma’s Mink Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 15 to 35. San Bernardino was knocking on the doors of success and jockey Neeraj Rawal ensured the expectation turned into a reality. Freestyle saved place money. Lesser fancied Country’s Bloom, from the stables of Faraz Arshad won the lower division of the race thanks to the ineptness of jockey J Pradeep on Amaethon. Smile of Peace who led from the start had the lead going into the final furlong, but Country’s Bloom showed up on the wide outside with a powerful effort to take charge. Amaethon who was loitering in the rear with the jockey not being aggressive suddenly woke up when the jockey made a half-hearted effort. Amaethon waded through the crowded field and got a run along the rails and came home with a powerful effort only to miss the berth by a neck. A more enthusiastic and earnest effort would have got the race for Amaethon by a comfortable margin. Smile of Peace stayed on to take the third position.

Sharat Kumar trained Irish Prince who had been out of several airings, had come down to the required handicap and his credentials looked impressive in the Belmont Park Plate (Div I), a race for horses in the lowest category. Favourite Find lost his way at the gate itself. Tudor Prince led from the start and gave hopes but faltered closer home. Irish Prince who showed out on the wide outside, produced a flourishing run and sailed ahead to record a comfortable win at nourishing odds. Incitatus snatched the second place from White Snowdrops who in turn held off Find to get the fourth position. Tudor Prince failed to find a place on the frame. Apprentice jockey Kaushik who was perhaps riding for the first time on the Bangalore track, did not realise the dangers of rushing the horse from the wide outside to the front on the local track and this went against the chances of favourite Gumption in the lower division of the Belmont Park, a race for horses in the lowest category. Gumption cut across the field from the outside draw and had a runaway till lead the final furlong. From this point, he began to slow down and K P G Appu trained All By Myself showed swift progress and caught up with the front-runner in sight of the winning post and retired home a facile winner. Romantic flashed on the scene late to grab the runner-up berth from the favourite.
