A long shot from trainer Britto’s stables Tamara brought off a big upset in the 1200 metres N M Lingaraju Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 45 to 65, the feature event of the penultimate day’s racing of the Bangalore Summer Season held on Thursday. Samar Singh trained Shubha Ka Tara was widely believed to be vastly superior to the opposition but the favourite flattered to deceive much to the chagrin of punters who had reposed faith in the public fancy.

Apprentice jockey Md Asif Khan took Tamara to the front from the word 'go’ with the favourite in chase in a handy a handy second position. Tamara looked vulnerable in the straight when Shubha Ka Tar essayed a strong challenge but surprisingly the favourite failed to sustain his flourish and surrendered meekly allowing Tamara to win by a length. Alberetta was some lengths behind in the third position.

Irfan Ghatala trained Teodoro recorded an encore in style when swamping the opposition in the 1400 metres B Puttanna Memorial Trophy, a race for horses rated 30 to 50. Jockey Zervan had Teodoro in a handy second position Morane Gabriella set the pace and then had his charge leave the front-runner stranded soon after turning for home. Teodoro proved so good for the opposition that the horse won pulling up by a widening margin of seven lengths. Triggar was driven out to get the better of Lightning Attack for the runner-up berth.

Britto saddled a brace of winners as he had scored through Bora Bora in the day’s third race, the 1100 metres Angel Dust Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 30 to 50. Trevor took Bora Bora on a start to finish mission and the front-runner managed to storm to the winning post as the challenge from Tarini came too late in the day. Siyouni too produced a late dash but missed the runner-up berth narrowly. Favourite Halenka made no show. K P G Appu trained Beyond Reach brought off a big upset in the lower division of the race. Panama made a start to finish bid and had enough lead going into the final furlong. However, the complexion of the race changed once Beyond Reach found his rhythm and came home with a big flourishing run which fetched victory for the long shot easily. San Bernardino was well placed to have a say in the finish but lacked the extra gear to make a difference to the outcome. Apprentice jockey Darshan’s persistence helped San Bernardino snatch the runner-up berth from the longtime leader by a whisker.

Satish Narredu trained Radiant Treasure found the company Star Contender Plate, a race for horses rated 15 to 35, a productive one. The three-year-old who had made no show in three of his runs in maidens’ company was switched to a handicap race and he had only to tackle Spirit Bruce and Black Whizz to win the race. The last named flopped miserably and finished a faraway third. Jockey Yash Narredu brought Radiant Treasure into strong contention in the final furlong and met with a stiff resistance from Spirit Bruce who came with a strong challenge in the forceful hands of jockey Sai Kiran. The two fought all the way in the final furlong with Radian Treasure holding on to the narrow lead.

The penultimate day’s card was devoid of any interesting race and the ones which were racing for winning some stake money were in the fray. The 1200 metres Tudor Jet Plate, a race for horses rated 15 to 35 did not have a single runner who inspired confidence. Inayathulla Khan trained Raw Gold who hadn’t won for 388 days, put the right foot forward to win the race from Bellerophon. Favourite Daisy Duke led from the start but approaching the final furlong, she had run out of her reserves. Raw Gold got busy at this point and surged ahead and easily held off the late flourish of Bellerophon. Youresohandsome took the third place.

Gregory Sandhu had a firm favourite in the 1400 metres Commanche Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Lassilo was well prepared for a coup. Anthony Raj brought the fancied runner into strong contention and the favourite had no problem in steering clear of Raven Star for a comfortable win. Securing Smiles was third.
