Trainer Vijay Singh’s trusted galloper, Multitude (Suraj Narredu), did the trick again, and with authority. The six-year-old won the 1,200m Calcutta Monsoon Sprint, Tuesday’s feature, from Amorous White (P.S. Chauhan) and Brahmachari (C.S. Jodha) to justify his 8/10 odds. The afternoon also witnessed the Bharath Singh’s three-year-old, Eastern Star (Y.S. Srinath) bounced back to form, out-shining a potential set of youngsters in the 1,100m Calcutta Juvenile Sprint.
Multitude was ridden in a check, behind trainer Vikash Jaiswal’s trio of speedsters — One Man Army, Amorous White and Denny Crane. The Multidimensional son was brought with a powerful run, inside the last furlong, to scamper home in a spectacular manner.

Bharath’s Eastern Star, had displayed his sprinting abilities in his maiden outing, last winter, over a seven-furlong trip. The Knight’s Tour progeny however, failed in his subsequent two starts, over identical course, but his recent run, over a scurry, against the seasoned galloper, Victoriana, was promising one. Eastern Star led from the start and went on increasing the winning lead. The front-running role seems to be suiting the youngster to his advantage.
In the same race, Bharath’s another youngster, Lumos (A. Sandesh), was impressive, inspite of a big defeat. The Arazan colt was almost throughout in the chase of the winner and fought out a grim battle for the second berth with last winter’s champion filly Aashna (Suraj).
Vijay’s He Call The Shot helped the trainer score a brace of wins, thanks to apprentice Nikhil Naidu’s positive efforts, in the 1,400m Winfree Handicap. Naidu rode a copybook race, doing everything right on the 18/10 favourite – who was hanging-in early in the straight, and shifting out in the final stages – to ward off trainer Harvinder Bath’s Eternally (Dashrath Singh) simultaneous challenge, inside the last furlong.
Vijay and Naidu, were, however, at the receiving end in the 1,200m Stoney Valley Handicap when their other baby, Caddilac, failed against Jaiswal’s long-shot, Simran’s Choice (Chauhan), after raising hope in the final 200m of the race.
The lesson learnt in the day’s card was that three-year-olds are finding the going a little tough in the open Classes.
Bharath’s Kantai (Srinath) was another such victim in the Class IV Great Tribute Handicap. The three-year-old, though heavily sweating in the paddock-parade, ran her heart out but to a narrow defeat at the hands of two seasoned gallopers – Prince Of Heart (Hindu Singh) and Dancing Lord (Sandeep Rajput), who contested for supremacy in the final 150 meters.
The third youngster, who was also at the receiving end against seniors, was trainer Raunak Banerji’s 2/1 favourite, Exclusive Power (C. Alford), in a Class IV event, the 1,100m Alvarada Handicap. Having won her last start comfortably, the filly struggled to keep pace with the opposition.
As a result of this, trainer Aashey Doctor’s speedster, Naumee (app. R.S. Bhati) won the race after chasing the long time leader, Jaiswal’s Born To Win (Md Imran) till about 150m in the home straight.
Trainer Javed Khan’s heavily fancied Tomorrow Forever (Jodha) just about managed to beat Deepak Karki’s quietly fancied runner, Bournville (Sandesh) in the curtain-raiser, the 1,200m Alamito Handicap. In the same race, Arti Doctor’s In The Night (Srikant Kamble) displayed plenty of speed but ran short of gas, early in the home straight.
