Padmanabhan trained New Creation gave an assertive performance to win the1600 metre Chaitanya Chakram Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 and above which was one of the highlights of the truncated race card held on Thursday at Bangalore. It rained heavily during the running of the fifth race and the Stewards decided to cancel the remainder of the programme barring the Summer Million due to unsuitable underfoot conditions. However, the Bangalore Summer Million has been postponed and will be held on Friday as the first race of the day.

Ambrosio had finished 3.6 lengths ahead of New Creation on the last occasion. The latter didn’t get a clear passage when finishing fourth. Ambrosio was penalised four kgs for finishing second while New Creation’s rating had gone up by two points and based on that performance of these two horses when they clashed, New Creation clearly had an edge. However, Ambrosio who had finished second best on two occasions and incurred penalty for the same was widely expected to make amends and was backed strongly ahead of New Creation.

To make matters worse for the favourite, jockey Trevor Patel kept Ambrosio so far behind that it was practically impossible to cover so much ground on the winner who tracked Merlot and Booker Jones into the straight and had the lead going into the final furlong. New Creation won by a margin of over three lengths. Ambrosio was driven out to get the better of stablemate Punjabi Girl for the runner-up berth.

Arjun Mangalorkar trained Abira ran away with the 1200 metre S M Ramakrishna Rao Memorial Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 30 to 50 in the pouring rain. Abira had finished more than 12 lengths behind in her last run which was questionable, to say the least. Perhaps the trainer has an alibi if at all any question is posed to him. Now backed to the exclusion of the rest, the money indeed made the filly run! Jumping off smartly from the gates, John had Abira settle behind Harmonia who led the field into the straight before assuming command in the stretch and then bolted clear for an outstanding win by more than five lengths in testing conditions. Alberetta ran on to take the second position ahead of last start winner Galvarino who made a hopeless bid on the wide outside.

Neil Darashah trained Alexander Burnes who was running after a gap of 188 days made a winning comeback with a resolute win in the 1400 metres Capricorn Stud Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds. After favourite Cavaliere led deep into the straight, Alexander Burnes came into strong contention in the final 150 metres and managed to overhaul the front-runner. Alexander Burnes then had no problem in staving off the led bids of Rorito and Queen Regnant. Cavalier weakened to finish fourth while Ozark finished down the order.

The one-sided betting on Azhar Ali trained Sadaqat was a clear indication of the shape of things to come in the 1200 metres Camino Plate (Div I), a race for horses in the lowest category. Such races are often won by horses which would not have been hitherto exploited and the market trend would indicate that something is brewing about them. Sadaqat was backed heavily in the ring and the favourite came into strong contention in the final furlong and overhauled the front-running Premier Premises despite running green and sped away for a comfortable win in the hands of Anthony Raj. Smile of Peace ran on late to occupy the second position ahead of another late comer Paradiso. Premier Premises weakened to finish fourth. Lesser fancied Odyssey from the stables of trainer Sharat Kumar came up with a good burst of speed in the final furlong to get the better of strongly fancied Gin Daisy to win the lower division of the race. Girl With Pearl necked out Duty Call to save place money. The odds on the ante-post favourite, Dallas drifted out and apprentice jockey Akram was very feeble in his efforts.
