Trainer Aashay Doctor’s filly Izzy (Dhanu Deora-up) decimated hopes of nine in the opposition for the 1,400m Calcutta Fillies Trial Stakes, Friday’s feature event. A 7/1 shot in the betting, the Western Aristocrat-La Joie Da Vie daughter, served a harsh notice on trainers Vijay Singh’s pair of Valeria (Nikhil Naidu) and Angel Grace (Hindu Singh, leave alone the highly rated Bharath Singh’s ward, Rosina (S. Zervan) who was, again, no match for the winner. Incidentally, Izzy’s was the first major success for the young and enterprising trainer, Aashay, on an afternoon that was otherwise ruled by apprentice Sujit Paswan.

It was left to Raunak Banerji’s speedster, Arabesque (B. Mahesh) to help the winning chances for her better fancied stable-mate, Louboutine (Suraj Narredu). Arabesque set the early pace while Valeria was in the tow; until the halfway mark. Valeria kicked away from that point and was being hailed as a winner, inside the last furlong, when Izzy changed gear, ridden well off the pace, and on the wide out, to seal the issue – about 100m from home.

There were no hard luck stories as far as the other fancied runners like the 7/2 joint favourites Louboutin and Rosina were concerned. Izzy, in the final furlong proved far too, good and provided a champion-like performance.

Bharath, however, scored a consolation victory after his 7/4 favourite, Eastern Star (app Sujit Paswan) had the measure of the Deora-ridden, champion sprinter, Accolade – from Shafiq Khan’s stable – in the 1,200m Bhishma Cup. The victory of the four-year-old, more importantly, for the trainer, may prove as a morale booster , in view of Bharath lean season. Also for the apprentice who has been, of late, setting the RCTC on fire. Easter Star provided Sujit his third win in the seven-event card.

Sujit started off with victory of trainer Daniel David’s Hurricane Storm, in the lesser event, the 1,100m Dysonomia Handicap. The 15/1 chance, a speedster, was ridden well off the pace to beat Vijay’s 3/1 second favourite, Dakshesh (Naidu), right at the post. In the same race trainer Vikash Jaiswal’s heavily fancied runner, Montecasino, ridden by jockey Ajeet Kumar, failed to get a favourable galloping route, from a wide outside draw. Yet the horse placed a good fifth – about 2 ls behind lengths behind the winner.

Half-an Hour later, Sujit was back in the winners’ enclosure, riding another gallery-finish on trainer Javed Khan’s fancied runner, The Last Judgment, who proved a marginal better for another of Vijay-Naidu’s partnered Diamond Hour.

The Vijay-Naidu’s partnership flourished right from the opener after the 2/1 favourite Yuvan delivered the goods in the 1,600m Alibi Handicap that the four-year-old won from the start.

Vijay was also helped by the champion jockey, Suraj, who drove the trainer’s fancied runner, Arjuna, to an easy start-to-finish victory to bag the 1,600m Bold Raider Handicap.

The curtain came down, following James McKeown also had his share of winner. In the Andrada Handicap, James’ Novikov decided to put his best foot forward to easily have the measure of Javed’s Carpe Noctem (C.S. Jodha) and Vijay’s Summerhill (Suraj).
