Noshir Cama trained Bronx won the Gr 2 Aquaguard Championship RWITC Ltd Gold Cup, a terms race for four-year-olds and over with surprising ease at Pune on Saturday. The long-shot pounced on the front-running favourite Auburn inside the final 300 metres and stormed clear to win by a widening margin of seven lengths over Raees and Watchmyscript. The two market fancies ran down the field.

Auburn had slammed the field on the last occasion over eight furlongs and he was expected to maintain his winning form and accorded the status of being a favourite ahead of Bangalore challenger Secretive Force. Bronx who hadn’t won for 258 days and had not made a mark in graded races was quoted at odds of 15 to 1. Neeraj Rawal had Bronx relaxed in about the fourth position as Auburn went at a good clip in front followed by Vulcan and Secretive Force. Raees and Turning Point were in the rear group with Watchmyscript being ridden in exaggerated restraint, being a tailed off last. Parmar who rode Watchmyscript took an unconvincing objection against Sandesh who rode the runner-up for squeezing him out soon after jumping out which affected his chances as he could not hold a forward position. The objection bordered on being frivolous and was promptly overruled by the Stewards.

Jockey Akshay Kumar on Auburn twice looked back to see if he was too far ahead or whether he was going at the correct pace. It was clear that Auburn had expended her energy in her front-running tactics as she looked beat even as Bronx was cruising up in the stretch. Secretive Force too sent distress signals and fell back to the last position with jockey Zervan easing up the horse possibly because something was not right with the four-year-old. Bronx left the field stranded after storming ahead of the pacesetter and won more easily than even the most optimistic supporters of the five-year-old gelding would have imagined. Raees moved from the rear in the straight to get the second position ahead of Watchmyscript from the runner-up berth. Vulcan was fourth.

Adhiraj Jodha trained Warrior Clan had good credentials to score in the 1000 metres Party Whip Plate (Div I), a race for maiden three-year-olds especially after the good second behind Auspicious. That run had come after a long gap of 210 days and as such, that effort was bound to improve the three-year-old gelding to be spot on for this race. Sandesh had Warrior Clan take charge from the word go and had no problem in staving off the challenge of stablemates Thea’s Fire and C’est L’Amour who finished second and third respectively. Shiraz Sunderji trained Chephirah was quoted at cramped odds after the forward effort of last run and the three-year-old daughter of Verenar duly accomplished the task in the lower division of the Party Whip Plate with a measure of comfort. Chephirah did not show speed from the gates and jockey C S Jodha had to continuously work on the favourite to get her to overhaul the front running God’s Decree in the straight. The favourite shot ahead inside the final furlong and won from Twinspire who was a noteworthy second despite the lackadaisical efforts on the part of apprentice Raghuveer Singh. God’s Decree stayed on save place money.

Hoshidar Daji Sunrise Ruby pulled it off in the 1400 metres Suraiya & Masoom Master Trophy, a race for maiden three-year-olds with a spirited run down the final furlong. Tristar who led from the start had the lead going into the final furlong but weakened allowing Sunrise Ruby who was in the chase to go ahead. Notoriety too finished on well to take the second position while Tudor Hill nosed out the long-time leader Tristar to save place money.

Sandesh tenaciously drove out favourite Rainbow Trout to stave off the spirited challenge of Power of Thor to land the spoils in the 1600 metres Mount Rose Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Rainbow Trout was boxed in between Shae who did all the front-running and Power of Thor with the latter lugging in and going on to the favourite making things difficult for Sandesh. However, Sandesh was not perturbed as he pushed the favourite through the narrow gap to get Rainbow Trout to put her neck in front at the finish. Shae weakened to finish third.

Suraj Narredu’s tactical ride enabled Malesh Narredu trained Auspicious to record an encore in the 1200 metres Allied Forces Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Suraj settled Auspicious in about the fourth of fifth position along the rails allowing those in front to expend their energy as they were going at a frenetic pace. Suraj seized a narrow opening along the rails and pushed Auspicious to take over the running at the top of the straight. The favourite had the speed to shoot through and stormed clear to win by a comfortable margin over Night Hunt and Run Forest Run. Adhiraj Jodha trained Articulate had run a fair third to Majestic Warrior in his last outing and looked good to win the lower division of the race. Articulate chased Mount Olympus well into the straight before asserting his supremacy in the final furlong in the hands of jockey Neeraj Rawal. Stick To The Plan essayed a strong challenge close home but the favourite had enough legs to reach the safety of the post. Periwinkle ran on to save place money.

Sangram Singh Joshi trained Isinit won the concluding race of the Pune racing season, the 1000 metres Irish Boss Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Apprentice jockey Kaviraj had Isinit chase Furiosa well into the straight before gaining superiority in the final furlong. Isinit held off the challenge of Maestro quite easily. Furioso stayed on to save place money. There was solid support for Narendra Lagad trained Thea’s Pet, but the five-year-old mare was never in the hunt sticking to the rear right through the race.
