Trainer Vijay Singh’s 6/1 shot, Jacobin (app. R.S. Bhati-up) , scored a decisive victory in the 1,400m Bullet Cup on Saturday, the feature event in the season’s opener. The afternoon was otherwise ruled by jockey Hindu Singh who, not only aided Vijay to saddle a treble but also assisted schooler James McKeown with a brace of wins. Hindu’s ended the day with a quadruple of wins, his first and quite a creditable achievement.

Apprentice Bhati rode a perfect race, on Jacobin; until 250m from the winning-post. He settled his charge along rails and allowed the fancied lot of After Shock (Dhanu Deora), the stable’s better fancied runner, who was followed by Bharath Singh’s Reincarnation (app. Sujit Paswan) and Javed Khan’s Coup De Grace (Imran Chisty). Bhati was also lucky to be presented with a wide rail-side opening to slip into a winning lead but failed to maintain a straight course, though travelling clear of the long time leader and rest in the opposition.

Hindu was, however, lucky to be among a bagful of winners. Vijay’s Gaurish, in the day’s opener, the 1,100m Moon Mission Handicap, and Valeria in the 1,400m Annella Handicap were chance rides for Hindu as the originally declared rider, Nikhil Naidu, had reported sick.

Incidentally, the Lady luck smiled at Gaurish as the top-weighted Tough Enough (app. Tajeshwar) burst blood vessel, no sooner the later came abreast of the start-to-finishing Gaurish, inside the last furlong.

Valeria’s was a commendable effort as the Classic filly butchered the opposition, coming from the wrong-end of the field with Hindu having little to do as she raced towards the winning –post.

Hindu rode a well-judged and a powerful start-to-finish race on McKeown’s Alpheratz in the 1,400m Love Is Blind Handicap. There was a hard luck story for Bharath to narrate as Fancourt lost much ground at the start and yet came desperately close to finish behind the winner and the heavily fancied Kimaya (Imran Chisty).

McKeown’s Viareggio provided Hindu a clean win in the 1,200m Reminiscent Handicap. Allowing the early leaders Tia Queen, Abelson and Stelvio Pass some advantage, Hindu shot clear of the opposition for a facile win.

Scorpion Queen’s (Rajinder Singh) run away tactics in the 1,400m Piato Handicap unsettled the heavily fancied James McKeown’s youngster, Abenaki (B. Mahesh). As a result of this, trainer Jasbir Singh’s in-form Modification (app. Rupal Singh) easily won the race.

The Doctor-family of Arti and Aashay were the leading players in the 1,100m Galashiels Handicap, with Sharavati (Dhanu Deora) and San Remo (C. Alford) coming in for some support each at 6/1. The end-result was a ‘nose ´victory for Sharavati, thanks to the slow start of San Remo.
