Falcon Edge maintains winning form

By: Tippu Sultan   August 13 , 2022

Hilton Sequeira trained Falcon Edge maintained his amazing run of wins by overhauling the opposition with a fair degree of comfort to record the sixth win of his career from seven starts in the Royal Revive plate, a race for horses rated 60 to 85, the feature event of Saturday`s Hyderabad races. Falcon Edge had suffered just one reverse in the Gr 3 Deccan Colts Championship Stakes during the last monsoon season.

Falcon Edge had recorded an easy win in his first start of the season and considering the fact that he had strong credentials, he went to the post as a strong favourite. The bookmakers were to realize in hindsight that they perhaps erred in offering a quote of a little more than even money for him to record an encore in the season. Jockey Akshay Kumar who is winning races by the dozen at all racing centres, had no problem in bringing Falcon Edge with a late charge in a style typical of him. The favourite had no problem in covering the leeway on those in front despite an interfered passage and did what was required of him to put his neck in front at the post. Falcon Edge won easier than the verdict. Stablemate Peaky Blinders had shaped to cause an upset when he had gone into what appeared to be a winning lead in the final furlong. Stunning Force was third. Falcon Edge is in great nick and a repeat win is a possibility unless of course the progeny of Gusto is campaigned more ambitiously in the Guineas.

Akshay Kumar had a treble for the day. His horses were so good that he could come and win from any position, the interferences or the lack of a clear run not affecting the chances of the horses he is guiding. The well fancied Super Angel had good leeway to cover on Mark My Day who had spurted spiritedly and opened up a good lead. The favourite responded well to the urgings and readily put in the work required of her. The late charge produced the desired results as Super Angel got the better of Mark My Day in the shadow of the post. Staridar held off Royal Grace for the third position. The last named came in for good support in the betting ring but his chances were somewhat spoilt because of the lethargic beginning from the gates.

Akshay Kumar rounded off his tally with the third straight win when he guided Sun Dancer for an easy win in the 1400 metres Royal Windsor Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Sun Dancer came up with a powerful surge down the final furlong to overhaul the front-running Linewiler for a facile win. Prime Gardenia covered plenty of ground in the closing stages of the race to be a suggestive second ahead of Linewiler who failed to carry on the momentum when pressured by horses from behind.

Sreejant trained Dr Dee Dee came in for one-sided support to win the 1200 metres Razia Sultana Plate, a race maiden three-year-olds. Suraj Narredu had the favourite take charge from the jump out and Dr Dee Dee toyed with the opposition with a dominant performance, winning by a widening margin of five lengths win over Avancia and Protocol. The benefit of a forward early in the season was enough to sharpen up Dr Dee Dee to give a commanding performance.

Leo D`Silva trained Winning Streak brought off an upset in the 1600 metres Palampet Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45 where the on-money favourite Superstella flopped with a timid performance. From a handy position, Winning Streak had no problem in overhauling Explosive who had the lead approaching the final furlong. Team Player, with a late surge, snatched the runner up berth from Explosive. Superstellar was widely reckoned to be good enough for an encore especially since the services of Akshay Kumar had been sought but the favourite disappointed the punters who considered the favourite as being invincible. Jockey Feroz was astride the winning horse, Winning Streak who was recording his maiden win from 112 starts.

The day`s opener, the 1200 metres Gadwal Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45, saw favourite Bellagio flop. Lesser fancied Mysterious Angel, from the stables of trainer Vittal Deshmukh, had seized a decisive lead by the final furlong and was in no danger of being caught up with by the favourite. Baisa necked out Coming Home to save place money.
