Ballerina wins by the skin of her teeth

By: Tippu Sultan   January 2 , 2022

Suraj Narredu drove out Prasad Raju trained Ballerina to win the Gr 3 1200 metres Byerly Turk Million, a terms race for three-year-olds, the feature event of the races held at Malakpet on Sunday. Ballerina thus recorded her second straight win while conceding weight to most of her adversaries. She escaped defeat as first-timer Sensibility just about failed to collar the eventual winner by the proverbial whisker. Ballerina is by Kunigal Stud Farm`s first season sire Sanus Per Aquam.

The quality of the maiden win recorded by Ballerina was such that despite the filly conceding four kgs to her challengers, she was backed down to even-money favouritism. There was support for Arabian Queen to cause an upset. Kaitian was the other horse who was in the betting. After last time winner Happy Go Lucky lived up to her name leading the field well into the straight and disappearing, Ballerina took charge and spurted ahead. Ballerina shaped to win comfortably but the complexion of the race changed once Sensibility got into her rhythm and came home with a rush only to miss the target by a hair`s breadth. Kaitian who stayed in touch with the front-runners weakened to finish third.

The small card of six events also saw a half of the races go the way of long shots. Shashikanth trained Green Turf brought off a win at fancy odds by resolutely staying in front in the face of an onslaught launched by Mirana and won by a neck the 1400 metres Sweet Girl Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. From a handy position at the top of the straight, Green Turf was pushed to take over the running by jockey Anthony Raj and though the front-runner looked vulnerable all through the straight, Green Turf had enough legs to pass the post ahead of fast-finishing Mirana. Chuckit nosed out Good Connection to save place money. Favourite One Wish ran below expectations.

The day`s opener, the 1100 metres Next Move Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds, went the way of Satheesh trained High Reward who showed good improvement over his previous run to win the race with a measure of comfort. Carlisle held off Meridia to take the runner-up berth. The strongly fancied Adamas made no show.

Vittal Deshmukh trained Despang was another upset winner during the course of the day`s action in the 1600 metres Common Land Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. The progeny of Multidimensional fought on relentlessly in front and shook off the challenge of favourite Malaala close to home to land the spoils. Lightning Fairy nosed out Bloom Buddy to save place money. The lower division of the race also was claimed by Vittal Deshmukh`s well-backed ward Campania who raced freely in front, established a useful lead going into the final furlong and staved off the late bid of Star Babe and fast-finishing Grand Duke. Favourite Dream Station raced too flat for comfort.

Ravinder Singh trained Greek`s Ace obliged expectations in the 1600 metres Trade Fair Plate, a race for horses rated up to 25. Greek`s Ace hit the front inside the final two furlongs and managed to stay in front despite drifting out of a straight course in the hands of apprentice jockey Guarav Singh. Solo Winner`s late charge could only fetch the seven-year-old the runner-up berth ahead of Sorry Darling. Greek`s Ace was a strongly backed favourite.
