Count of Savoy impressive in victory

By: Tippu Sultan   January 3 , 2022

Shiraz Sunderji trained Count of Savoy recorded an impressive win in the 1600 metres Laknavaram Cup, a race for horses rated 40 to 6 5, the feature event of Monday`s Hyderabad races. Count of Savoy who had gone down fighting in the Golconda 2000 Guineas was entered in this race and as his trainer said, his performance would give a clue whether he could be a possible entry in the forthcoming Derby.

On this score, Count of Savoy did everything right to enhance his credentials. His win was authoritative despite the fact that he took a while to warm up while overhauling the front-runner NRI Infinity, in the process suggesting that he would be more at home over trips longer than the one he essayed.

NRI Infinity was taken on a start to finish mission with Count of Savoy in the chase. The situation did not alter till deep into the final furlong. After a persistent effort by jockey C S Jodha, Count of Savoy finally got going and in the end, was stretching away from his rival to eventually win by a widening margin of three lengths. NRI Infinity held off the late rallying November Rain to keep the runner-up berth.

The well-backed Pacific Command had no problem in treating the field with disdain in the 1200 metres Streak of Dawn Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Pacific Command was pushed to take charge on turning for home by jockey Akshay Kumar and the progeny of Planetaire had no problem in sealing the race a long way from home. Grand Finale pinched the second spot from OK Boss and Special Effort in a cluster finish.

Wandering Warrior from the stables of trainer Jasbir Singh who had recently relocated from Kolkata was the favourite to win the 2000 metres Ramappa Cup, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. It turned out that the faith in Warning Warrior was misplaced as the favourite was a beaten cause well before the race came to the boil. Bold Bidding who raced prominently assumed command approaching the final furlong and won with a great deal of authority from Yesterday and Ice Berry. Akshay Kumar was astride the winner.

Mir Faiyaz Ali Khan trained Angelita was a good thing beat last time out due to the jockey running into rough weather at a crucial juncture of the race. As such, her win in the 1400 metres Firecrest Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45, was not entirely unexpected though the thrust of betting was on Akshay Kumar ridden NRI Sport. Ajeeth Kumar had no problem in steering Angelita to victory. The lesser fancied runner came from way off the pace with a powerful gallop and swept past those in front of him. Beauty Flame and NRI Sport who were battling the issue had to settle for the minor berths.

Satheesh trained Royal Pal was the well-backed horse in the 1400 metres Thunder Light Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated up to 25. Royal Pal proved too good for the field leading all the way and checking in by a margin of over three lengths. The fight if any was only for minor slots. Neffereti snatched the second position from Wild Card. Shashikanth trained Miss Little Angel was the short-priced favourite to win the lower division of the race. Jockey Anthony Raj had the favourite establish a lead right from the start and had no problem steering the horse to victory. Miss Little Angel shaped to win comfortably but, in the end, slackened which enabled Sye Ra to come from way behind with a threatening effort, falling short to overwhelm the front runner by a narrow margin. My Master was third.
