Truly Epic prevails in Madras Race Club Trophy

  February 20 , 2022

The wait for a win got longer for Imtiaz Sait trained Caprisca who was reckoned to have the best chance of breaking the endless wait of over 1000 days for a win when he lost to stablemate Truly Epic in the three-horse field that vied for the 2400 metres Madras Race Club Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of Sunday`s mediocre card of seven events. Jockey Dashrath Singh failed to make effective use of the staying ability of Caprisca with his timid approach and the slow pace suited Truly Epic who recorded his first win beyond the 2000 metres in 33 outings.

Caprisca had run a fair race when Juliette was the winner about 14 days ago. Since stamina was his forte, he was reckoned to have it easy as other than his stablemate, Magistero hadn`t won for 1577 days besides having won just two races in 42 outings. In a slow run race, Magistero set the pace followed by Caprisca and Truly Epic. Dashrath made his move only on entering the straight and took over the running from the pace-setter inside the final 300 metres. However, he could not keep the lead for long as Truly Epic produced good acceleration and easily measured the favourite. Magistero finished down the field.

Vishal Gaikwad trained Birkin Blower recorded an encore in the 1200 metres Ibrahim A Rahimtoola Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Birkin Blower had good speed to take charge from the word `go` and his foray in front was uncontested as he easily held off the late rallying Spring Grove to win in the hands of jockey Trevor Patel. Remus did not show much progress from the previous effort when finishing a tame third.

Pesi Shroff trained Kinnara looked a cinch in the 1400 metres Seth Ramnath Daga Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 top 46 after having finished third in a tight finish last time out. Now assigned to promising apprentice Kritish Bhagat, the well-bred daughter of Kingman raced a handy third deep into the straight before asserting her supremacy. Rubik Star ran on late to take the second position ahead of Commandment. Last start winner San Salvatore was disappointing.

Imtiaz Sait who saddled three winners during the course of the day had a well-backed winner through Impermanence who just about managed to win the 1000 metres Kazakh Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Hilma Klint had to change course to the rails as the favourite drifted out across the path of the fancied runner who was making his bid. Apprentice jockey Hilma Klint managed to take his horse along the rails and the lesser fancied runner railed along the rails but missed the berth by a whisker. There was an objection by the runner-up against the winner. The Chief Stipe and the other Stipendiary Steward felt that the outward drift of the winner affected the chances of the second-placed horse and hence the objection deserved to be upheld. The amateur Stewards overruled the objection! Right or wrong, the professional stipes were put in poor light as their opinion had no value which is not a good happening.

Pesi Shroff trained Northern Light who has let down as many as times as he had won, made amends for his last start defeat by staving off the challenge of strong favourite Petronia in the 1600 metres Sir Rahimtoola Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 to 86. Petronia was sluggish at the start and thereafter raced keenly with jockey Trevor Patel struggling to settle her on an even keel. Northern Lights led from the start and then battled on resolutely in front and thwarted the challenge of Pride`s Angel to assert his supremacy. Petronia galloped in snatches on the wide outside and failed to deliver.

Lesser fancied The Flutist made a strong rally in the final furlong to edge out Spiritual Rock in the closing stages of the race to land the spoils in the 1600 metres Dr A H Sayed Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Debutant So So Special was the favourite but the filly ran freely and was a spent force in the run-in for home. Caprifla who received a lot of support in the ring was well positioned but did not show enough speed in the final furlong and could only finish third.

Pesi Shroff trained Irrepressible was expected to make amends for her narrow defeat last time out but the progeny of Ampere did not show any improvement as the filly faltered after being prominent till entering the straight. Imtiaz Sait trained last start winner Rasputin shook off Ladida and the other opponents and spurted ahead in the final furlong to win with a measure of comfort. Chancellor showed some spark when making a late rally to be an impressive second ahead of Ladida.
