Joaquin graduates in Graded race company in a thriller

  August 14 , 2022

Trainer Shaazaan Khan achieved a personal milestone when he saddled his first graded race winner through Joaquin who made his mark in the graded race company by staving off the prolific Enigma to win the Gr 3 Akkasaheb Maharaj Trophy, a terms race for four-year-olds and over, the feature event of Pune races held on Sunday. Joaquin had to win the race in the Stewards room as well following an objection by the rider of runner up for interference soon after jump out from the gates.

Enigma had come from Bangalore having beaten dual Sprinters` Cup winner Multifaceted and finishing second best on the next occasion. Enigma had the fitness and had five wins from nine starts to her credit. On the other hand, Joaquin too had a formidable tally of seven wins from 14 starts though success in the graded races had eluded this consistent performer. Joaquin had the benefit of a race run on the Pune track having won his last outing in smashing fashion and hence was a strongly fancied runner along with Iron Age and Enigma.

Jockey Sandesh took Iron Age in his customary front-running role but slowed down the pace within the first furlong putting those coming from behind in a spot of bother. Joaquin who moved smoothly from the outside draw took the second position and in the process Enigma who was looking for a space alongside the front-runner got a slightly squeezed and had to drop back tightening those on the inside, with Ascoval being the worst affected, causing the Bangalore challenger to fall way behind. Joaquin engaged Iron Age in a battle for supremacy and went past the front-runner in the final furlong. Enigma too came with a big challenge but the front-runner was unrelenting and staved off the bid of the former by a neck. Leopard Rock ran on strongly from behind to nose out Iron Age to save place money.

Jockey Pradeep Chouhan who rode Enigma put an objection against Zervan who rode the winner Joaquin for shifting in soon after the jump out, squeezing and bumping him which caused him to check his horse, thereby losing a couple of lengths which cost him a certain race. He also brought Srinath who as astride and Trevor Patel who rode Ascoval to highlight what he perceived as a dangerous interference which could have caused a grievous mishap. The Stewards overruled the objection as they felt that there was carelessness on the part of jockey Zervan but did not find strong grounds to uphold the objection. It was a fair decision.

The horse which held early advantage stood to gain in most races of the day as those making their challenge from behind were unable to overhaul those who had established what turned out to be winning leads. Bezan Chenoy trained Cellini, the speedy customer had all the credentials to be the favourite with Superlative whose effort was a winning one at Hyderabad also cornering considerable support. In the event, Trevor had things his way from the start on Cellini who enjoyed a healthy lead, skipped clear in the stretch to record an easy by a margin of four lengths over Superlative who was found wanting. Kings Best ran on to finish second.

Hoshidar Daji trained Birkin Blower benefitted immensely by the run benefit by claiming the 1600 metres Jockeys Association of India Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 66, in a fighting finish over Aegon. Srinath took Ageon on a start to finish mission and the fancied runner fought resolutely before Birkin Blower, in the hands of emerging star, apprentice Prakash to eke out a last stride win. Lit came with a late charge only to finish an impressive third suggesting a possible win in the next outing.

N S Parmar drove out M K Jadhav trained Fortunate Son to stave off the spirited bid of Fiery Red to win the 1400 metres Western India Race Horse Owners` Association Trophy, a race for maiden three=year-olds. Fortune Son who had the first run on his opponents did not give up the lead all the way in the homestretch despite a threatening bid by the well backed Fiery Red. The latter looked like he was going to collar the front-runner but the front-runner pulled out that bit extra to land the spoils. Keeper who perhaps would be better off over longer trips, was a fair third.

Adhiraj Jodha trained Aac De Triomphe was backed strongly to win the 1800 metres Rajaram Chhatapati Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 to 85. Acr De Triomhme who was a noteworthy second last time was taken on a start to finish mission by jockey N S Parmar. Arc De Triomphe enjoyed the uncontested lead and he expanded it to a widening margin of six lengths when he reached the post. Bold Legend gave chase to the eventual from the start and lost the runner-up berth to Successor in the closing moments.

Narendra Lagad trained Majestic Warrior who had finished second best on the last occasion made amends in the apprentice jockey Mustakim Alam by guiding the favourite to an easy start to finish win in the 1200 metres Animal Welfare Board of India Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Cipher who lost considerable ground at the start could have been a potential winner given the way he finished with a powerful effort and falling short in the end by a mere length. Divine Hunt had a useful outing by taking the third position.

The benefit of a race run made a world of difference to Pesi Shroff trained Emrys who swept the others off their feet by winning the 1400 metres Atmosphere Plate, with a start to finish dash. The well backed Sim Sim gave a strong chase but found the eventual winner too strong for comfort. Mystical Rose was third.

Dallas Todywalla trained Beemer benefitted by the forward run when finishing second best to Cipher early in the season, recorded a comprehensive win in the 1600 metres Lago Medio Plate, a race for horses in the lowest class, after a long wait of 562 days. Sandesh waited with Beemer patiently as Regal Prince set the pace. Sandesh got busy approaching the final bend and smoothly cruised to win as he pleased. Power of Thor and Campaign occupied the next two slots behind the winner.
