Market King wins in record time

  August 27 , 2022

With aggressive front-running, Shiraz Sunderji trained Market King not only beat the opposition with a fair degree of ease but with a record to boot in the 1200 metres Fair Haven Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of races held on Saturday at Pune. Market King bettered the long-standing record of Evatina by stopping the clock at one minute 07.91 seconds. Jockey N S Parmar was astride the winner.

Market King who was well placed in the scales showed good speed to bolt to the front from the start and stayed put there even as the others in the field took a while to get into their rhythm and this included the second favourite Endeavour who was conceding plenty of weight to the front-runner. Sky Fall who was taking a quantum jump into this class, travelled wide and never looked the part. Market King came all alone in front and by the final furlong, it was clear that Endeavour would find it hard to catch up. All that Endeavour could do was to come within a length of the winner which in itself was a good effort under the circumstances. Sky Fall was more than four lengths adrift in the third position while the rest failed to make an impression.

Prithviraj trained Karanveer hadn`t raced much in his career though there was no doubt that he needed more ground to prove his mettle. With two runs to his credit, Karanveer was campaigned ambitiously in the Golconda Derby where he led all the way and managed to finish a close fourth with a front-running effort. With the benefit of two race runs during the Bangalore Summer Season, Karanveer was confidently entered for the 2400 metres Juventus Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. The betting rage was Botero who had let down expectations last time out over a reduced trip of nine furlongs. There was a disclaimer from trainer Pesi Shroff about Botero`s chances when he said that he was preparing Botero for the Leger over a trip of 2800 metres even though he expressed his reservations about the horse getting the gruelling trip in the manner of a top-quality stayer. Jockey Imran Khan took Karanveer on a start-to-finish mission and the Bangalore challenger enjoyed the uncontested field. Karanveer was chased by Own Voice, Own Legacy, Botero and Easy Rider. Karanveer stayed on strongly and in fact, extended the lead at the top of the straight which proved to be a winning one. Botero finished from way off the pace but could not bridge the gap completely and had to settle for the second slot. Pesi was perfect in his assessment of his ward that Botero would find it tough against a stout stayer. Easy Rider made a late rally to finish third.

The 2000 metres Richelleu Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category, saw A M Jadhav trained Amped being backed to the exclusion of the rest. With right reasons too as Amped had run a fair third last time out, less than three lengths behind Leto while the rest in the fray had no suggestive runs to their credit. Amped readily obliged expectations as jockey N S Parmar, impatient with the slow pace in front, pushed his horse to take over the running inside the final four furlongs. Amped smoothly cruised into the lead and by the final turn, was so far ahead that the others chasing from behind had no hope whatsoever. Lightning Flame stayed on to take the second position ahead of late rallying Verdandi.

Narendra Lagad trained Golden Neil recorded a smashing win in the 1400 metres B K Lagad Trophy, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Pesi Shroff trained debutant Sierra Dela Plata who had the benefit of a mock race was the favourite. The favourite ran green, was shuffled back in the early part of the race and received interference. All this made no material difference as Sierra Del Plate could have only finished second best as the eventual winner appeared to be a very superior horse. Golden Neil shot off from the gates like a scalded cat and was always in control of the race. Midway through the straight, jockey J Chinoy looked back to see if there was any possible danger. There was none. He could ease the horse despite which Golden Neil won by a widening margin of eight lengths. Sierra Dela Plate was second ahead of Kimiko. Balenciaga was sluggish at the gates.

Apprentice jockey Praveen Shinde recorded the first win of his career when he managed to steer long shot Sovereign Master from the stables of trainer Nazak Chenoy to victory in the 1000 metres Yogender Singh Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Northern Singer who was a runaway winner last time out was the preferred horse. Northern Singer had to be pushed to take over the running by apprentice Mustakim Alam with Sovereign Master for the company. The duo came away from the rest and fought the battle for supremacy all the way in the straight. Shinde was able to outwit Alam in the end for his career`s first win. Sovereign Master had run rather poorly last time out and showed vast improvement. Nazak Chenoy also had the winner of the lower division. Enlightened towered over the opposition after a suggestive second behind Esperanza who had gone on to win again. The progeny of Leitir Mor whose last win was about 600 days ago, did not have any worthwhile challengers and this was reflected in the odds quoted on Endeavour who went to the post as a very short-priced favourite. Jockey Trevor Patel had no problem in steering Endeavour for an easy win. The favourite dominated the race taking over the running at the top of the straight and winning by a widening margin of five lengths over Stars For You. Victoria Peak held off The Pianist to save place money.

Himmat Singh trained The Flutist came up with a late rally to neck out long shot Twelfth Earl to win the 1400 metres Gaea Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Magic In The Wind was the favourite but the M K Jadhav trainee lost all her chances at the gate itself. Twelfth Earl led from the start and looked like just about managing to last out. However, his hopes were put paid by The Flutist who under a strong drive by T S Jodha managed to put his neck at the all-important end. Cognosco who was chasing the front runner took a long while to get into full steam and could only get the third slot, a neck behind Twelfth Earl.

Malesh Narredu saddled his first winner of the season when the lesser fancied Mystical Rose got home in time in the hands of apprentice jockey M S Deora to get the better of Sky Hawk in the 1400 metres Irish Racing on play.rwitc.com, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. The betting was confined to Full of Grace, Dragoness and Tyrone Black and all of them let down expectations, the second named losing all chances at the gate itself. The authorities would do well to consider banning such horses which are regularly losing ground at the start because they are a drain on the punters who tend to give these horses a chance in the belief that if the horse gets a good jump, the race is as good as over. This feeling is also strengthened by the views of the professionals in the pre-race interviews. The story keeps repeating. Inside the final 100 metres, a host of horses were in the line but in the end, it was confined to Mystical Rose and Sky Hawk.
