Agnostic hammers the field on way to victory

By: Goldie Boy   August 31 , 2022

On an eventful Wednesday afternoon, trainer Bharath Singh strongly fancied runner, Agnostic (P. Trevor-up) delivered the goods with authority to land the 1,100m Skyexch Unleashed Cup. Agnostic a 5/4 favourite was the savior for many along with, Neil Darashah`s half-money rage in the betting, Roudy (app J.H. Arul) who easily claimed 1,400m Sweet Senorita Handicap. The six-event card, otherwise, witnessed quietly fancied winners, leaving a majority of race enthusiast clueless about their recent or past form. Nevertheless, Darashah ended the day with a brace of winners – his other gain being Sicily (A. Imran Khan), 5/1 shot in the 1,400m Stay In Shape Handicap.

The afternoon also had its share of an ugly incident. The visiting jockey Chethan Gowda had a nasty fall from El Patron, right after the start of the Stay In Shape Handicap . The jockey suffered head injuries and was rushed to the ICU in a city hospital. He is under observation.

Agnostic displayed a brilliant turn of foot. Positioned, almost at the wrong-end of field as most of the early half was dominated by Patrick Quinn`s pair of Trump Girl (Md Islam) and Soaring High (app Angad) while the likes of Sea Of Cortez (Arul) and Barack (S. Saqlain) were also within the striking range.

Inside the last furlong , when the last three named were disputing the issue, in came Agnostic with raking strides to settle as to who was the boss. Sea Of Cortez was a fighting second, marginally ahead of the top-weighted runner Soaring High.

Darashah`s day started on a promising note as Sicily was promptly at the helm along with Aashay Doctor`s Oswald, who was making debut, till about 300m from home. Inside the last furlong, Sicily looked assured of the winning bracket, though a late surge by Doctor`s Nazaakat (app. Tejershwar) added some excitement. The two runners were separated by one and half-a-length at the wire while the rest of the field was outclassed.

Roudy, though, hammered the field by three long lengths in the 1,400m race, the frontline classic aspirant failed to keep a straight course. The popular view was that the Sanus Per Aqam son is a Derby horse, and not a strong choice for the Colts Stakes. Trainer Vijay Singh is expected to jump into the fray in the coming weeks and his arrival may change the equation alarmingly.

Quinn`s hunger for winners was apparent when money from all quarters followed in Properly Posh`s (Angad) direction. The six-year-old Varena mare was a notable runner in her last start and she fully justified the support against Darashah`s four-year old filly, Regency Gold (Arul). The 9/4 favourite who was at the helm till about a furlong from home but surrendered meekly, once Properly Posh gathered momentum from the mid-field to score going away from the long-time leader.

Doctor`s 3/1 favourite, in closing time, Cape Tanaros (Nikhil Naidu) was a good thing lost to the speedy Vikash Jaiswal`s runner, Indian Tiger (Sujit Paswan), in the concluding event, the 1,100m Skyexch Sprint Handicap. Cape Tanaros not only took a fly jump out to lose the early advantage, the four-year-old also took a circuitous route at the home turn and shifted out badly, too, to lose the race by a neck.

The day`s opener, the Picture Perfect Handicap was claimed by Daniel David`s 6/1 chance, Lightinthesky (app Rupal Singh), narrowly from Vikash`s Moon Art (Vinay Jaiswal), a 2/1 favourite. Lightinthesky led out from the start and held on courageously from the favourite to win by a neck.
