Victorious Sermon staves off Sunrise Ruby in feature

  September 17 , 2022

Vinesh trained Victorious Sermon held off the late challenge of Sunrise Ruby to win the 1600 metres Mysore Race Club Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of Saturday`s Pune races. Jockey Sandesh had an excellent day booting home three winners through Flying Scotsman, Jack Bauer and Victorious Sermon.

The race had an open look about it as none of the contestants had outstanding form. Taimur who had gone down fighting to A Star Is Born was the favourite ahead of Sunrise Ruby and Victorious Sermon. The last named had run a forward race in his previous but had not been a model of consistency having not won for over 500 days. Victorious Sermon was seen in a different light this time out, enjoying the uncontested lead in the front and having a winning lead by the final furlong. Sunrise Ruby made a big rally from way off the pace but it was bound to go in vain as the front-runner had the race firmly in his grasp. Kamilah lost pace at the final bend and had to be pushed hard to gain momentum but despite the bottom weight, the filly could only get the third slot, nosing out Augustus Caesar.

The concluding race of the day, the 1200 metres Nationalistic Plate (Div I), a race for horses in the lowest category, was an eventful one. Remy Red who came in for sustained support in the betting ring, played up even as the start was being given and lost all chances. Jack Bauer who raced up with the field easily held off the late rallying Anoushka to land the spoils as a fancied runner. Multiencrypted was third.

On a complaint of the jockey that he was not ready at the start and that he had conveyed the same to the starter despite which the start was given causing him to lose all chances of winning. There was a lengthy debate by the Stewards exploring whether there was any false start, whether there was anything that the jockey could be faulted for or if it happened in the flow where the starter could not have stopped pressing the button. The Stewards came to the conclusion that despite the jockey stating that he had called out to the starter that he was ready and that a handler had held his horse which prevented the horse from getting a proper start, the incident did not call for any change in the status of the race either in terms of declaring the affected horse as a non-starter or there was a false start to the race. All said and done, Remy Red is a habitual problematic horse at the jump and the Stewards would do well to stop those horses from racing after giving a few chances instead of allowing them to run eternally much to the detriment of punters. Also, the Stewards would do well to consider whether they should give a handler at the gates which is a practice mostly restricted to India.

Imtiaz Sait-trained Pisa won the lower division of the Nationalistic Plate at long odds. Turmeric Tower was strongly fancied to win. When Turmeric Tower joined issue with Pisa in the final furlong, it looked as though the former would prevail. But the strong riding of Anthony Raj as contrasted with that of five kg apprentice Mustakim Alam without the cushion of a whip made a critical difference to the outcome of the race. Pisa won by a long neck. Zacapa was third more than four lengths adrift.

Malesh Narredu trained Wall Street had been subjected to vigorous preparation which perhaps might have been equivalent to having run at least a couple of times in a race. Despite running for the first time in his career and that too over a trip of 2000 metres, the progeny of Speakingofwhich was backed down to strong favouritism. In the race itself, Wall Street raced in a handy posey before Yash Narredu pushed the favourite to take charge approaching the final bend. Wall Street skipped clear without having to be ridden fully for an impressive win by a margin of over five lengths. Kiefer was second ahead of Gimme.

Bangalore-based jockey S Saqlain had no problem in guiding Altaf Husain trained on-money favourite Soup And Sandwich to an easy win in the 1000 metres Dr K Vasudevan Trophy (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Soup And Sandwich dominated the proceedings leading from the start and skipping beyond the reach of anyone in the straight. Hilma Klint gave a chase without home finishing second best ahead of stablemate Northern Singer. Rehanullah Khan trained Outlander who had shown improvement after the benefit of a race run as evidenced by the track work, was backed to the exclusion of the rest in the lower division of the race. Jockey Ajinkya had no hesitation in taking Outlander to the front with Red Carnation in the chase. The former shook off his challenger in the final 100 metres to record a comfortable win. Tarzan ran on to finish third.

Shiraz Sunderji trained Flying Scotsman whose last run at Hyderabad was a winning one, had no problem in dominating the 1600 metres Dinkoo N Chenoy Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Sandesh kept Flying Scotsman in a handy position even as Chieftain set a modest pace with favourite Queen O War in proximity. Rounding the final turn, Flying Scotsman came up with tremendous acceleration to easily sail past those in front to win by a widening margin of four lengths at long odds. Flaming Lamborgini was second ahead of Mystical Rose. Queen O` gave a disappointing performance.
