Lagos confirms her status as the best sprinter

By: Tippu Sultan   December 10 , 2022

Donald Netto trained Lagos proved that she is the best sprinter on the local circuit when carrying the top weight to an easy win in the hands of jockey Deepak Singh in the 1400 metres R Raghupathi Reddy Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of races held on Saturday. Deepak Singh replaced the originally declared jockey Suraj Narredu but his riding was as flawless as what the champion jockey may have offered.

Lagos was in great nick having reeled off three wins in a row over a six-furlong trip. The reason the mare may have run at long odds was because of the replacement of jockey Suraj Narredu with Deepak Singh, the top weight and the fact that the filly was running over seven furlongs where she had not won on the few occasions she had run in her formative years. The once-rousing performer Corfe Castle was the favourite along with support for Watch My Stride. Lagos was quoted at lucrative odds of 6 to 1.

New Look went at a decent clip in front which perhaps enabled Deepak Singh to settle the speedy Lagos in about the fourth or fifth position till turning for home. Watch My Stride was in the mid group while Corfe Castle, as is his wont, was in the rear position. Deepak Singh made a decisive move at the top of the straight and the mare at once took command of the race with a blistering turn of foot and established what turned out to be a winning lead by the final furlong. Corfe Castle made a late rally along with Watch My Stride but Lagos was comfortably home, sparing two lengths at the finish. Corfe Castle necked out Watch My Stride to get the runner-up berth.

These days, the trend has been increasingly such that those horses which receive significant support in the betting ring are seen in different colours. Trainer Jasbir Singh has been pretty successful on horses of his stable which come in for big support and it was so with Indian Temple who was backed down from a higher quote to end up as a strong second favourite. The odds on favourite Castlerock drifted out in the ring. In keeping with the market expectations, Indian Temple produced a tremendous burst of speed in the final furlong to storm clear to win 1200 metres Zoom Zoom Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45, by a widening margin of three lengths over Glimmer of Hope. Favourite Castlerock who looked like a beaten horse well before the race came to a boil, ran on to finish third. The pacesetter Golden Forza weakened to finish fourth.

Hilton Sequeira trained NRI Ultrapower powered her way home in the 1400 metres Bakranangal Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45 but yet to win a race. NRI Ultrapower easily collared the front-running favourite Bien Pensant in the hands of jockey Akshay Kumar and went away for a facile win. Power Ranger held off Arrowtown to get the second spot. Bien Pensant packed up when the pressure was on and finished in the ruck. The Jasbir Singh-trained Wandring Warrior came in for one-sided support in the lower division of the race. Jockey Mukesh Kumar brought Wandring Warrior wide into the straight and in a trice, the favourite had swept past the field and gone beyond the reach of the rest. Clefairy who lacked early speed and was in the rear group finished strongly to take the runner-up berth ahead of Visionary.

Exclusive Luck went in front at a scorching pace enjoying a big lead over the rest but in the straight, the favourite Angelita under a strong riding by Afroz Khan, covered the leeway and stormed clear by the final furlong to win by a widening margin of six lengths to justify strong favouritism in the 1400 metres Kawal Tiger Reserve Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Exclusive Luck just about managed to keep the second position from the late rallying Southern Act by a neck. The winner is trained by Mir Faiyaz Ali Khan.

Magan Singh Parmar trained Its On came in for sustained support in the 1200 metres and showed amazing improvement when trouncing the field in the 1200 metres Tribute Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category. Dhanu Singh Deora pushed Its On to take charge from the front-running Space Time at the top of the straight. Its On bolted away to win by a margin of five lengths over Astronaut and Good Tidings who fought for the minor spoils.

Lesser fancied Master Touch from the stables of trainer Faisal Hassan won the 1400 metres Dindi Dam Plate, a race for horses in the lowest category, with a great deal of ease. Favourite My Way Or Highway was never in the hunt and eventually finished third. It`s My Life led the field till deep into the straight before Md Ismail brought Master Touch on the wide outside with a powerful gallop. The lesser fancied runner bounced clear of the front-runner and won with a measure of comfort. Ar Superior held off My Way Or highway to get the second spot.
