General Atlantic makes amends for last start failure

By: Tippu Sultan   January 3 , 2023

Ravinder Singh trained General Atlantic who had lost a possible winning chance last time out by arriving late on the scene made amends, with a change in tactics in the 1400 metres Rani Lakshmibai Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 65, one of the highlights of races held on Tuesday which did not feature any cup event. Jockey Akshay Kumar booted home a double before pulling out from the last two races after being declared medically unfit to ride.

On the last occasion, General Atlantic lost a possible winning chance by leaving too much to do in the final furlong conceding big lead by letting the front-runner the luxury of an uncontested run in the front. This time out, jockey Gaurav Singh unhesitatingly took the favourite to the front aggressively pushing the horse till he went ahead. General Atlantic responded well, and established a winning lead by the final furlong which held the favourite in good stead when Miss Marvellous and Char Ek Char covered ground menacingly in the closing stages of the race.

An uncomplicated ride by jockey Akshay Kumar ensured an easy win for Donald Netto trained All Time Legend in the 1200 metres Cupid Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 40 to 65. The odds expanded on All Time Legend in the betting ring with noticeable support coming for Unsung Hero close to race time. The lack of quick reflexes and a sense of anticipation on the part of jockey Rafique cost Unsung Hero a possible winning chance. Rafique went for a gap on the inside of Malaala which quickly closed as the horse rolled in. In the meanwhile, All Time Legend had gone sailing clear with a smooth run on the outside of the horses in front. Rafique was left with the hopeless task of breaking the stride of the fancied runner, then pulling his horse out and making his bid on the wide outside. The manoeuvre effectively took away whatever chances Unsung Hero had and despite covering good ground in the end, he was found to fall short. Malaala stayed on to finish third though he was reported to be trotting lame after the race. Briar Ridge woke up to the task rather late and could only finish fourth. The well-backed Shazam from the stables of trainer Magan Singh Parmar had no problem in disposing of his rivals in the lower division of the race. Akshay Kumar kept Shazam in a handy second position as City of Bliss did the pace-setting. Down the final furlong, Shazam overwhelmed the favourite with a minimum of fuss and went on to win by two lengths. Beauty On Parade who came in for a late surge in the betting did not make any impression when finishing a tame third in the hands of first-season apprentice Sonu Kumar.

Fancied Sound Echo from the stables of trainer Sreekant made a successful start-to-finish bid in the 1100 metres (Div I), Moulana Azad Plate, a race for horses rated up to 25. Kuldeep Singh pushed Sound Echo to take charge from the start and enjoyed an uncontested lead all through the race. The front runner always looked in command of the race with none of the runners from behind looking capable of overhauling Sound Echo. The late rally by Canterbury along the rails added some excitement at the finish. Ayur Tej was third.

Mukesh Kumar drove out Leo D`Silva trained Wind Sprite to a resolute win in the 1400 metres Best of Gold Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. There was a significant drift in the odds quoted on Nucleus who opened as the favourite drifted out but the odds expanded with Wind Sprite being backed down with conviction with people in the know. Wind Sprite broke the maiden`s rank in the 14th attempt with an uninterrupted run in the front. Favourite Nucleus was positioned in the rear group. The four-year-old favourite who was running for the second time in his career had too much ground to cover to make a difference in the outcome of the race. Though Nucleus found spaces on the inside and came into contention in the final furlong, the front-runner was in no danger of being caught up with. Nucleus managed to get second place ahead of Resurgence. Sweet Talk who took a good jump this time out ran on late despite not getting a clear run along the rails to finish as an eye-catching fourth.

When in doubt back the one which gets backed the most could well be a guiding principle of many punters. The odds in the betting ring on Blazing Jupiter reduced significantly close to race time from a higher quote to end up as a second favourite in what appeared an open type of betting in the 1200 metres Sarojini Naidu Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. After Gusty Note led the field into the final furlong, Vision of Rose went sailing ahead and shaped like a winner. However, her hopes were put paid by the late surge of Blazing Jupiter who in the persevering hands of jockey Ajeeth Kumar covered enormous ground and got past the front runner in the shadow of the post. Last start winner Its On who closed as the favourite before the horses were flagged off, ran on late to be a close third ahead of Salisbury.

Long shot Paree in the hands of a five kg claimer nearly brought off an upset in the 1100 metres Moulana Azad Plate (Div II), a race for horses rated up to 25 but lost to the fancied Euphoria in the closing stride of the race. Paree had a runaway lead going into the final furlong but apprentice jockey Sonu Kumar could not induce vigour at the finish without the aid of the whip as he is yet to get the privilege of carrying a whip. Magan Singh Parmar trained Euphoria flew home in the hands of jockey B Nikhil to pinch the verdict with a late rally along the rails to pinch the verdict in an absorbing finish. Favourite Challenger was third a length behind the battling duo.

Satheesh trained Ice Berry recorded an encore in the 1200 metres Sarojini Naidu Plate (Div II), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Golden Forza ran freely in front and had the lead till the final furlong. Ice Berry who was in the chase got the measure of the front-runner down the final furlong and sped ahead to win at long odds in the hands of apprentice jockey R S Jodha. Royal Star, Angel Tesoro and Coming Home ran on late to finish in a line for minor placings in the order mentioned.
