Stunning force upsets with a late surge

By: Tippu Sultan   February 7 , 2023

Faisal Hassan trained Stunning Force brought off a big upset in the 1400 metres Elite Zone Plate, for horses rated 60 to 85, the highest-rated event of the races held at Malakpet on Monday. Stunning Force who hadn`t won for more than 400 days found wings as he produced a powerful run down the final furlong from way off the pace in the hands of jockey Mohit Singh to pinch the verdict in the waning yards of the race. Young jockey Saqlain who has made a big impact in his short career winning at all centres, made his presence felt on the Malakpet track with a fine treble.

Thanks who was the favourite was interfered with in the first two furlongs when Mark My Day crossed over causing the horse to stumble from which the five-year-old mare never recovered and eventually finished last. Mark My Day was overhauled by Trump Star in the stretch and marched ahead. However, Trump Star could not handle the sustained bid of Stunning Force whose finishing burst took him past the front-runner well before the post. Trump Star however was able to keep the runner-up position by thwarting the late bid of Shazam. Mark My Day was a close fourth.

The suggestive third behind stablemate Anab E Shahi had sharpened Hilton Sequeira trained Brilliant Star who won the 1100 metres Perceived Value Plate, swamping the opposition by a widening margin of five lengths in the hands of jockey Suraj Narredu. Brilliant Star chased the front-running Warwick well into the straight before assuming command approaching the final furlong and sped away for an easy win. Windsor ran on from behind to nose out Warwick to get the second spot.

Malaala who had been pretty consistent in her recent runs was rewarded for the same as she won the 1200 metres Forest Treasure Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 40 to 65, with a measure of comfort. Kiran Naidu on the well-backed favourite from the stables of Sequeira found the required spaces in the centre of the field and charged ahead by the final furlong. Malaala had no problem in finishing well clear of Briar Ridge. Beauty on Parade and City of Blessing and Star Racer finished in a line, with the first two named horses dead-heating for the third place. A power-packed finish by Saqlain enabled All Time Legend to prevail by a neck in the lower division of the race. All Time Legend was boxed for a clear run in the final furlong but Saqlain tactfully manoeuvred his way to overhaul the front-running Garnet. Above The Law came up with a big rally but All Time Legend was able to reach the safety of the post, sparing a the neck at the finish. Samrat was the favourite but the odds drifted dramatically close to race time. In keeping with the market expectation, Samrat lost chances at the start itself with a lethargic beginning.

Sreekant trained Star Cruise won the 1200 metres Madanna Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated up to 25, in a close three-horse finish. Star Cruise tackled the front-running Silver Lining and surged ahead. Star Cruise had established enough cushion when Ayur Tej and First Class came up with late rally. Saqlain drove out Netto trained Gusty Note to a facile win in the lower division of the race. On the last occasion, Gusty Note had lost because the jockey who rode on that occasion, allowed the horse to run so freely in front that the horse had expended his energy by the final furlong. This time out, Saqlain was able to settle the speedy horse in the third position as Space Time and Red River set the pace in front. Saqlain pushed Gusty Note in between the front-running horses. Gusty Note gathered steam and went away for an easy win over Red River and the late-finishing Sea of Class.

Surprisingly, jockey Akshay Kumar was not seen on the horses saddled by Sequeira with whom he has had a highly successful association. Kiran Naidu was astride Linewiler who ended a long wait for a win by claiming the 1200 metres Malvado Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Linewiler chased Inside Story well into the story before assuming command approaching the final furlong and won with a measure of comfort from Pinatubo and Blazing Jupiter. Inside Story weakened to finish fourth. Saqlain managed to drive out the lesser-fancied Sally to victory over the more fancied Blast In Class in the lower division of the race. Suraj Narredu pushed Blast In Class to take charge inside the final furlong even as Saqlain on Sally was getting busy. The latter finished strongly but drifted out under pressure but Saqlain was able to ride out the five-year-old mare to extract a neck win. Fatuma was third.

The 1400 metres Swamy Ramananda Tirtha Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45, went the way of the favourite Clefairy from the stables of trainer Prasad Raju. Classical Music had stolen a march inside the final furlong but a late dash induced by apprentice jockey Santosh Raj had the desired effect. Clefairy managed to lunge home for a neck win. Power Ranger was a close third ahead of London Bell, Coming Home and Fresh Hope who finished almost in a line.
