Born Queen reigns supreme at Chennai

  January 14 , 2021

Satish Narredu trained Born Queen maintained her amazing winning sequence when easily accounting for the opposition in the Gr 1 South India Derby, the feature event of the races held at Chennai on the Pongal day. Incidentally, the South India Derby offered the highest prize money despite the COVID Pandemic while the other clubs in the country have made a drastic cut and even gone to the extent of cancelling the event. This is surely a sign of the upward curve that the club is taking in all aspects apart from its money management skills. More of it later.

Coming back to the Derby, the unbeaten Born Queen, bred at the Coimbatore based Sans Craintes Stud Farm, came to be acquired by the URBBL after its original owner Narayana could not sustain his activity due to crash crunch brought about by the Pandemic. The filly was sold for a modest price but has earned nearly ten times the amount it was brought for. For URBB, it was a big bonus because apart from the Derby success it gave to new promotor Saketh Bahuguna, the value of the champion for its stud farm activities is also immense. Racing is full of stories where horses sold for throwaway prices due to economic factors turning out to be huge money-spinners much to the chagrin of the original owners.

To the credit of the champion filly, despite being asked to race in a classic for the fourth time in about a month`s time, Born Queen has taken the racing in her stride and each time has come out with a stellar performance. Jockey Suraj Narredu always believed that the horse had class and this element would help Born Queen to do well over the longer trips. And he has been proved right. For the second year in a row, the father and son combination of Satish Narredu and Suraj Narredu won this event, having been successful last year with Star Supremo, another horse acquired by its owners more or less in a similar fashion.

Born Queen stood out on her performance having remained unbeaten including the experience of going over the Derby distance in her success in the Oaks. Of the three formidable colts and gelding under consideration were Taimur, Giant Star and Vachan. Taimur was the beneficiary of a slow run race. Giant Star who had the breeding to get the Derby trip was reckoned to be an unlucky horse in the Guineas and there was an expectation that he would make amends. However, there was pre-race talk about the niggles that he had and the subsequent poor performance is perhaps self-explanatory.

Padmanabhan trained Sporting Memories who had won a race over a mile and a quarter at Bangalore went on a start to finish mission, with Suraj Narredu keeping Born Queen in about the third position while the rest were spaced out behind. Suraj quickly made his move on turning for home and by the final furlong, had got past the front-running Sporting Memories to eventually win with a measure of comfort. Sporting Memories too stayed on strongly to take the second position. Taimur was more than three lengths behind Sporting Memories in the third position.

Suresh trained Cavallo Veloce achieved the distinction of winning the 1400 metres Dr M A M Ramaswamy Memorial Trophy, a terms race for four-year-olds and over, for the second year in a row. The prolific performer is owned by the locally-based Arun Alagappan. Darius Byramji trained Multifaceted has always faltered when running as a favourite but strangely defying expectations when not running at odds. Multifaceted finished second ahead of Hyderabad based Victory Parade. An enquiry has been opened into the running of the favourite.

The Madras Race Club has been making all the right moves in its attempt to regain its past glory under the Chairmanship of M A M R Muthiah who sincerely wants to do everything possible to boost the image of the sport. Madras Race Club became the first club in the country to go for HD coverage of races. While the other clubs are still struggling with Standard Definition and poor streaming, Madras Race Club has shown the way.

The lounges for owners namely The Baron Lounge and the newly inaugurated Sparkling Princess Lounge for the Public have embellished the racing experience for racegoers. Former Chairman of Mysore Race Club and currently a Steward at MRC Chaduranga Kantharaj Urs sponsored the Sparkling Princess lounge in memory of his mother Gayatri Devi, sister of Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wadiyar who was also a keen racing enthusiast and owned the horse named Sparkling Princess. The club has recently built about 80 concrete roof stables. Thanks to Arun Alagappan who is a member of the Managing Committee, the veterinary hospital has been upgraded at a considerable expense. The Madras Race Club is making all the right moves while some of the other clubs are getting too complacent.

In a big development, the turf clubs which are located in South India namely MRC, BTC, HRC and Mysore Race Club have accepted to have a combined jackpot pool. This decision was taken at the meeting held at Chennai on the Derby day. The combined jackpot operation is not something new but the bringing in of Hyderabad Race Club into the fold is a big development. The Hyderabad Race Club had kept the unit of betting at Rs 5 but has now agreed to increase it to Rs 10 to bring uniformity only for the Jackpot. The jackpot hunters are big in number at Chennai, Bangalore and Hyderabad and the combined operation should be a huge success.

The attendance at the racecourse was pretty impressive and about 4000 people were present for the Derby day races which went off smoothly.
