Mystic Bay wins feature on the day of fancied winners

By: Frankel   March 11 , 2021

Malesh Narredu trained Mystic Bay staved off a stiff opposition from a host of horses when holding on to the lead to win the 1200 metres Byram N Jeejeebhoy Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of Sunday`s Mumbai races. The races ran kindly for punters chasing the favourite barring in the second race where the chances of the favourite Forever Together was compromised by jockey Suraj Narredu carrying an overweight of four kgs.

The permission by the Stewards for a jockey to carry so much overweight especially on a strong favourite in a handicap race came in for animated discussion among racegoers. The principle of handicapping is based on equating the chances of most horses in the fray. As such handicapping is a critical component in such races. A horse may be superior to the field but if the advantage is disregarded and the horse is burdened with more weight than the assigned one, it will have a critical role that might affect the chances of the horse under question. Such practices are undesirable. This put the unsuspecting punters at a great disadvantage.

Rajesh Narredu trained Forever Together had finished about six lengths off Lagarde in the Bangalore Derby and was considered as a racing certainty in the 2000 metres Ferrari Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 65 at the weights at which he was running. There were just four other runners in the fray and none had the form to threaten the favourite who looked a cinch. The overconfidence or otherwise of the connections was to come to haunt them as the race produced a big surprise in rank outsider Historian accomplishing a start to finish mission. Forever Together who was quoted at a miserly price struggled and looked a beaten horse by the final furlong. The three-length win might be flattering for Historian but it did no justice to the beaten horse as he was made to carry four kgs overweight. Historian who went on a start to finish mission looked vulnerable at one part in the straight when Forever Together came up with big strides but much to the shock of everyone, the front-runner was unyielding and in fact, skipped away. Athulya was a faraway third. The decision of the Stewards regarding the overweight was hotly debated and widely resented.

Coming back to the feature event, jockey C S Jodha took Mystic Bay on a start to finish mission and closer to home, St Andrews who came up with a big effort from the rear of the group looked menacing but faltered when about to overhaul the front-runner. Silver Flames weakened after briefly giving hopes in the straight. Gazino who shot through the middle in the closing stages of the race, fought on resolutely but Mystic Bay held on to win by half a length. St Andrews was third a nose behind the runner-up.

Altaf Hussain trained Sultan Suleiman obliged expectations and also in the process exacted revenge over Enid Blyton in the 1400 metres Worthwhile Plate, a race for horses rated 60 to 86. Majestic Warrior set a fast pace before weakening in the stretch giving way for Mount Moriah to take charge. Mount Moriah led deep into the straight with Enid Blyton looking the likely horse to overhaul the front-runner. However, Sultan Suleiman who moved briskly from the rear position charged home with a powerful effort and necked out Enid Blyton to land the spoils. Mount Moriah weakened to finish a close third.

Dallas Todywalla trained Viktorina made an impressive debut in the 1000 meters Ahmed I Rahimtoola Trophy, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Trevor Patel had Viktorina in the front from the word `go` and the favourite was in no pressure to retain the lead to eventually winning by a shade less than three lengths. Narakamicie chased without hope. Executive Decision was third.

The betting trend for the 1600 metres F K Vakil Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46, suggested a close race between Exotique and last start winner Wayin. Exotique who was running after 431 days had in her last effort had finished a close third. Assigned to apprentice jockey Kaviraj, Exotique showed alacrity to quickly assume command inside the final 300 metres and had enough cushion when Wayin closed the gap with a big effort. Wayin managed to get second place in a cluster finish with Flaming Lamborgini and In Contention.

Karthik Ganapathy trained Blazing Bay held off Fencing to win the 1400 metres Blue Ribbon Plate (Div I), a race for horses in the lowest category. Trevor pushed Michelangelo to take charge within the first 100 metres and the progeny of Arazan led the field into the straight but went wide at the final turn before the jockey eased up the horse sensing some problem with the horse who eventually finished way behind last. Blazing Bay who was in the chase took charge and managed to stay put to win from Fencing. Arrecife was third ahead of last start surpriser On Va Danser. Speculator was driven out by jockey C S Jodha to win the division II of the race. Lambretta led the field with Speculator under pressure throughout to improve. The fancied got the upper hand close to home. Caesar ran on to finish third.

Imtiaz Sait trained Endeavour managed to oblige the thrust in the betting with a comfortable win over Spring Grove in the 1000 metres D W Reid Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Despite going miles wide in the straight, Endeavour proved too good and spared a shade less two lengths at the finish to Spring Grove in the hands of apprentice Raghuveer Singh. World Is One was third more than seven lengths adrift.
