Knotty Dancer wins Golconda Million in taking style

By: Tippu Sultan   August 8 , 2021

Donald Netto trained Knotty Dancer slammed the opposition in the 1400 metres K Mahipathi Rao Memorial Golconda Juvenile Million, a race for maiden three-year-olds, the feature event of Sunday`s Hyderabad races in taking style. Knotty Dancer simply swept the opposition off their feet as he put in a speedy performance to win by a widening margin of three lengths. Jockey Akshay Kumar who rode the winner, had a rich haul of five winners for the day.

Pesi Shroff trained Mumbai challenger Columbian had strong support to have a bold show in the race, with Knotty Dancer being the most preferred horse of the local circuit. Knotty Dash bolted to the front from the word `go`, enjoyed an uncontested lead and had so much class that the others in the field were totally outclassed. Knotty Dancer spurted clear in the final furlong to win in amazing fashion. Alicia who was at the wrong end of the field ran on to take the second position ahead of Bugsy. Columbian stayed in touch with the front-runners till running for home and thereafter, did not raise a fluent gallop and was a beaten horse a long way from home. Columbian finished down the field and his dismal performance came as a big surprise.

Vittal Deshmukh trained classic winner Lombardy was widely expected to have it easy in the 1400 metres Newmarket Plate, a race for horses rated 60 to 85 and accordingly went to the past at a very cramped price. But Lombardy looked far from ready as she struggled to stay in contention and looked out of sorts and performed dismally. NRI Valley shaped to win the race as the five-year-old mare stormed clear in the final furlong but the ultra-consistent Downtown Gal produced a strong effort to collar the front-running in the dying moments of the race to record her fourth straight win in the hands of jockey Neeraj Rawal. Havelock Cruise ran on to take the third position. The performance of Lombardy came as a big surprise and her dismal run is hard to explain unless she went to this race grossly underprepared or suffered some ailment.

Hilton Sequeira trained Peaky Blinders managed to get the better of long-time leader Saffron Art to land the spoils in the 1600 metres Bipso Plate, a race for horses ratedd40 to 65. Saffron Art took over the running inside the final 300 metres and had a healthy lead over Peaky Feathers. A determined effort by the lesser fancied runner in the persevering hands of jockey Akshay Kumar, Peak Feathers managed to surge ahead of Saffron Art close to home. Fire Power who was quoted at cramped odds to record an encore was outpaced in the early part and had so much ground to cover on the eventual winner that he could only end up a disappointing third, making no progress from the previous effort.

The contestants in the 1200 metres Silver Jet Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45 appeared to be well matched as evidenced by the nourishing odds that each of the runners was quoted in the betting ring. NRI Magic who had the services of jockey Akshay Kumar was more preferred than the others. NRI Magic lead in earnest in the final furlong but close to home was overwhelmed by the late rallying King Maker. Mind Reader ran a fair race after a longish interval to finish a close third ahead of Explosive. Akshay Kumar brought the fancied NRI Vision with a late run on the wide outside and the progeny of Excellent Art packed enough power into his effort to get the better of Linewiler to win the lower division of the race with a great deal of ease. Four One Four who made a strong bid slackened in the final furlong and had to settle for the third slot.

Laxman Singh trained Bisate managed to oblige expectation barely staving off the threat of the late rallying NRI Sun to win the 1400 metres Mahalaxmi Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. From a handy position, Bisate shot ahead in the final furlong and had a useful cushion when NRI Sun made a big rally from, from way behind only to find the front-runner escape to victory. Cheltenham nosed out Trump Star to save place money.

Sequeira trained Lifes Song went to the post at very cramped odds and understandably so as she had imposing credentials against modest opposition. Lifes Singh was not unduly stretched by Akshay Kumar to win the 1200 metres Malakpet Plate (Div I), a race for maiden three-year-olds from stablemate Soloist. Minor Invictus was third. After her narrow loss in the previous effort, Sreekant trained City of Bliss looked set to make amends in the lower division of the race. Akshay Kumar had it easy on the favourite who easily kept the opposition at bay. Despite going wide, Total Darc managed to snatch the second berth from One More Time.
