Corfe Castle suffers shock defeat

By: Tippu Sultan   August 22 , 2021

Leo D`Silva trained Corfe Castle let down yet again in the 1400 metres Governor`s Cup, a terms race for three-year-olds and over, the feature event of Sunday`s Hyderabad races. Though Corfe Castle was conceding weight to all his opponents, the fact that his accomplishments were far too superior to the horses he was taking on over a suitable trip was the reason when this Sprinter`s Cup winner went to the post at cramped odds. Corfe Castle faltered badly and erstwhile Deccan Derby winner bounced back to victory after 676 days under the care of Hilton Sequeira.

Corfe Castle has often let down expectations but he has made amends in his subsequent efforts. On the last occasion, Corfe Castle lost by a whisker over a sprint and he was widely believed to regain his winning form over the seven-furlong trip. The weight he was conceding was not expected to be a hindrance as barring Consigliori who had proved his mettle over a longer distance, the others hadn`t been graded race performers. Consigliori had since changed stables and had moved from Vittal Deshmukh to Sequeira for new owner Subodh Chand Bothra.

Jockey Akshay Kumar took Consigliori on a start to finish mission. The progeny of Air Support stayed on stubbornly and held off the challenge of Victory Parade by a narrow margin. Corfe Castle did not show his patented acceleration and was a disappointing third. Prince Valiant who ran into a wall of horses in the stretch was finishing on well and he looks like he is bouncing back to his old zest.

It is very difficult to read the minds of the stewards especially when they sit to decide on objections. They take an enormous amount of time giving the impression that there is serious discussion going on but the outcome is almost always the same. Mir Faiyaz Ali Khan trained Aibak won the 1100 metres Beandaz Plate (Div II), at nourishing odds but in doing so, jockey Afroz Khan had no control on the horse in the closing stages of the race. Inside the final 100 metres, Aibak gave a bump to Golden Forza who was running close to the rails causing the horse out of contention. In the closing stages of the race, under pressure, the horse veered out and came in the path of Stark who was completely blocked for a clear run and also totally intimidated the fast-finishing Berkeley on whom apprentice jockey Gaurav Singh had to change course to prevent a collision. There was an objection by the riders of Berkeley and Stark. The jockey of Golden Forza could not obviously lodge an objection as his horse had finished down the field. The interferences should have been a matter of a Stewards enquiry. The interference looked not only serious but dangerous as well. The Stewards in their wisdom overruled the objections. There has been so much exposure to English racing in India especially the club itself conducts online betting operations and there have been many instances to know objections are decided upon. In this instance, the interference qualified both on a technicality and the other ground of making a material difference.

Be that it may, the Beandaz Plate (Div I), a race for the lowest category of horses, has always proved tricky for the punters however saw Sacred Lamp build on her last start effort, with a powerful surge down the final furlong from way behind in the hands of jockey Mukesh Kumar to land the spoils with ease. Secret Command held off Star Babe to take the runner-up berth.

Prasad Raju trained Her Legacy came in for big support to win the 1200 metres Hyderabad City Police Commissioner`s Cup, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Her Legacy shaped like a winner in the final furlong as from a forward position, Pradeep Chouhan was able to drive out the favourite to take charge. Maxwell who had earlier let down put paid to the hopes of the favourite with a late flourish, providing jockey Mukesh Kumar with a back-to-back double. City of Wisdom too finished with a purpose to take the third slot.

Hilton Sequeira trained Lamha completed a hat-trick of wins with an easy win in the 1600 metres Sai Rama Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Jockey Akshay Kumar relaxed Lamha in the rear, watching the frenetic action in front till turning for home and then alerted his horse to swamp the horses in front. Lamha picked up acceleration with a measure of comfort and stormed clear to win over Cheltenham who nosed out Sweet Melody to keep the second position.

Jockey Akshay Kumar who rode four winners in the course of the day`s action, began the day on a winning note on favourite Maximum Glamour who trounced the opposition in the 1400 metres Doncaster Plate (Div I), a race for maiden three-year-olds. Maximum Glamour collared the front-running Able Love with the jockey hardly having to move a muscle in the stretch and sped away for a win by a widening margin of four lengths. Able Love was second ahead of Moonlight Ruby. Akshay also had it easy on another Sequeira trained Soloist who improved on her last start second behind stablemate Life`s Song with a comprehensive win in the lower division of the race. Akshay had so much confidence in the ability of his horse or rather the lack of ability in the horses that his horse was taking on that he could wait unhurried at the rear before alighting the horse on the wide outside. The favourite smoothly cruised past the opposition to win with ease. Cheltenham held off Sweet Melody to finish second best.

Laxman Singh trained Sublime showed good improvement when making it a start to finish affair in the 1400 metres Ocean Star Plate (Div III), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Apprentice jockey Santosh Raj was not required to be vigorous on the winner who won with a measure of comfort over Lockhart. Rhine saved placed money narrowly holding off Explosive.
