Juliette bags President of India Cup in a tight finish

By: Tippu Sultan   September 12 , 2021

Karthik Ganapathy trained Juliette bagged the Gr 2 Golden Jubilee President of India Gold Cup, a terms race for four-year-olds and over, the feature event of Sunday`s Hyderabad races staving off Parisian in a close finish. Juliette who was conceding weight to all her opponents was made to stretch to the full by Parisian who had the weights in her favour. For jockey Sandesh who rode the winner, this was the fifth straight success in this event.

Juliette is undoubtedly the best older horse in training in the country. The five-year-old mare has been deprived of her share of winning the plum events because of the Pandemic which had season the cancellation of racing seasons all over India. Juliette had been well prepared with the benefit of a mock race at Bangalore and her last workout showed that she was fit for the fray. The weight that she was conceding to the well-performed Parisian was bound to pose a problem or two but her class was expected to stand by her side.

In a slow run race, Bisate did the job of a pace-setter followed by Alluring Silver, Parisian and Juliette who raced keenly in the early part of the race before adjusting to the slow pace of the race midway through the race. Bisate led well into the straight before Alluring Silver hit the front before being overwhelmed by Parisian who held fort till the closing moments of the race. Juliette took her own time to warm up but did so in the nick of time to neck out the second favourite. Alluring Silver weakened to finish third.

Srinivas Reddy trained Ashwa Bravo enjoys the tag of being the best four-year-old in training in the local centre and she was well placed in the scales to maintain her wining form in the 1400 metres A Krishnaswamy Cup, a race for horses rated 60 to 85. Jockey Pradeep Chouhan had an arm-chair ride on the favourite who asserted his supremacy inside the final furlong to win with a measure of comfort over NRI Valley and Ashwa Yashobali. Downtown Gal who had reeled off a series of wins ran below expectations to finish a poor fifth.

Luck continued to elude Vittal Deshmukh trained Good Connection who had been beaten in a close finish on the last occasion. The four-year-old filly was widely expected to make amends in the 1400 metres Rock of Gibraltar Plate, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Jockey Zervan took Good Connection on a start to finish mission. Perhaps he might have gone too quick in the front because the fancied runner began to send distress signals close to home which enabled the well-backed New Look to pull off a last stride win. Crazy Horse too spiced up things with a noteworthy effort and finished within reach of the first two placed horses. The heavily supported House of Diamonds failed to give hope.

Satheesh trained Kingston had reason to be a firm favourite for the 1200 metres Titch Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45 as he had not been brisk at the start on the last occasion and had failed to keep pace. Backed to the exclusion of the rest, jockey Nakhat Singh showed intent on Kingston racing prominently and the favourite burst into a winning lead in the final furlong. Though Lacrosse closed with a rush, he ran out of ground. Lorena was third. Faisal Hassan trained Different brought off a big upset in the lower division of the race, going beyond the reach of the short-priced favourite Mandala Bay in the final furlong to record an easy win. Aerial Combat headed Blissful to get the third slot.

Leo D`Silva trained Zamazenta built on the good forward run to record a win by a widening margin of five lengths in the 1600 metres Our Select Plate (Div I), a race for maiden three-year-olds. Zamazenta cruised into the lead very early in the stretch and went beyond the reach of the rest. Ashwa Misgun ran on to finish second ahead of Special Effort. Akshay Kumar who was astride Zamazenta also guided another facile winner November Rain who claimed the lower division of the race without coming under pressure. Winning Streak took the second spot ahead of Mireya. There was support for Dream Station but the horse lacked the speed to stay in touch with the front-runners and looked a beaten horse well before the final bend.

Favourite King Roger disappointed in the 2000 metres Carter Princess Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Lesser fancied Painted Apache showed up prominently in the stretch and had the race sewn up in the final furlong. King Roger made no show while occupying second place ahead of Forever Bond.
