Vijay rules the roost again

Trainer Vijay Singh scored another four-win haul, and thus was in total control of Saturday’s seven-event card, having saddled a quadruple of wins on the opening day, Wednesday. Vijay’s tally of winners included a young filly named Silver Bracelet who bagged the feature event, the 1,100m Sana Cup. Jockey Hindu Singh again helped the trainer cause with three wins but the narrow loss of stable’s another strong fancy, Oasis, early in the afternoon, pained his followers.

Jockey Trevor Patel also had his share of luck with a brace on an afternoon that witnessed a heavy downpour, barely an hour before the start of the day’s programme, threatening a warning bell to those targeting it as another favourites’s day.
Vijay’s day could have ended with five wins but his Oasis (Hindu-up) failed to beat Manvendra Singh’s Kimaya (Shezad Khan) – by a whisker -- in the Idaho Handicap. However, neither the trainer nor the jockey could be felted for this loss as Kimaya may have been benefitted by a lung-opener while Oasis failed, in a seven-furlong race and the wet track, despite his gross advantage at the weights.

Vijay opened his account in the second race, the 1,400m Smart Ruler Handicap when his 3/1 favourite, Ieilani (Hindu) delivered the goods. However, the Lady-luck smiled broadly on the trainer, as late as, in the fifth, sixth and the last race. The stable’s Inca (app Sujit Paswan) decided to put his best foot forward, in the 1,400m Golden Praise Handicap, having failed to do justice in his about half-a-dozen outings last season. In fact, Inca never looked like a threat to Roma Victor (Shailesh Shinde) – the runaway longtime leader --, and Malwa (Akshay Kumar), even inside the final 150m of the race. Accelerating impressively on the wide out in the final 30m, the 4/1 shot gave just about time to the race caller for mentioning: ‘it is Malwa from Roma Victor and Inca wins the race.’ In fact, even the ardent followers of Inca, who definitely had the credentials to score but on this occasion, they may have been taken by a complete surprise by the horse’s victory.

In the sixth race, the feature event, the 1,100m Sana Cup, Vijay’s Silver Bracelet’s (Hindu) victory was a treat to watch. Last winter, the Win Legend daughter may have disappointed in the Classics but displayed her Class upon maturity when she slipped into the winning lead from the half-way mark to record a four-length-plus victory over the Trevor-ridden Perpetual Winning, who was ridden in a check. The early front running pair of the ageing champion sprinter, Amorous White (app B. Antony) and Shimmering Star, (Akshay Kumar), the speed merchant, had set a cracking pace.

Vijay’s three-year-old, Dazzling (Hindu), too, proved decisively better than the Akshay-ridden Silken Stride, a debutante from Arti Doctor’s stable, in the concluding event, the 1,200m Mandolin Handicap. The Perfect Stride filly led till Dazzling came with a late run to score. In the same race, trainer C. Alford’s Euphratus (Trevor) attracted huge support to start as a 7/10 favourite but lacked the early speed, to settle in third. The favourite displayed some urgency inside the final 300m but apparently needed the run. In the end Phoenix Tower daughter placed a poor third.

Trevor, however, guided Alford’s another three-year-old Eastwood to an easy victory in the 1,400m Arezzo Handicap. Ridden in a check, till the home turn, it was easy for another of Phoenix Tower son. Trevor, early in the afternoon, had driven trainer Vikash Jaiswal’s 11/10 favourite, Yuvi, to a comfortable win in the 1,200m Fly High Handicap, the curtain raiser.
