Dream Seller keeps the winning momentum alive
24-Nov-2024: Pradeep Chouhan-trained Dream Seller kept the winning streak sizzling with a bold mission in the 1200-meter Royal Calcutta Turf Club Trophy, a contest for horses rated 80 and above. Though Dream Seller recorded his fourth straight win, this victory wasn’t quite the smooth sailing of previous outings. Leading comfortably by the final furlong, he had a gaggle of rivals breathing down his neck, with late closer Snowfall looming large. But just as the finish line beckoned, Dream Seller dug deep and kept his neck in front where it mattered most.

Santissimo strolls home unchallenged
01-Dec-2024: Pesi Shroff-trained classic winner Santissimo did exactly what was expected—waltzing to a bloodless victory in the 1400 metres A Campbell Trophy, the feature event of Sunday’s Mumbai races. The progeny of Gusto wasn’t so much racing as conducting a solo parade, leaving the rest of the field (if it can be called that) looking like extras. Pesi Shroff went on to achieve a treble for the day.

Zuccaro zips past, leaves Geographique in a tangle
08-Dec-2024: Pesi Shroff-trained Zuccaro, clearly revelling in the pinkest of conditions, stormed to his fourth consecutive victory with an emphatic performance in the Gr 2 Ardeshir Trophy, leaving the supposedly invincible Geographique and others gasping for air at Mahalakshmi on Sunday. Despite Geographique entering the fray with a lofty rating of 117 and a reputation built on marathon races during the monsoon season, it turned out she had bitten off more than she could chew on this sharper mile-long trip. Zuccaro simply ate her for breakfast.

Psychic Star shines in Pesi’s Guineas domination
15-Dec-2024: Trainer Pesi Shroff’s stranglehold on the Gr 1 Indian 1000 Guineas is so absolute, one might as well start calling it the Pesi Shroff Invitational. It’s become a recurring theme—like an annual holiday no one else gets to celebrate. Sure, the man’s yard boasts some of the finest-bred horses in the country, cherry-picked from India’s top nurseries, but let’s give credit where it’s due: turning blue-blooded racehorses into untouchable champions is no walk in the paddock. Shroff clearly has the formula—part science, part sorcery.

Odysseus wins by the skin of his teeth
22-Dec-2024: Pesi Shroff-trained Odysseus lived up to the literal meaning of a close shave, winning the 2000-metre Maharashtra, Gujarat & Goa Area Trophy by a short head at Mahalakshmi on Sunday. While he didn’t exactly set the turf on fire or make the quantum leap everyone had hoped for, he did just enough to snatch victory from Multiverse and the ever-late-to-the-party Booster Shot.
Santissimo conquers Guineas as rivals wave white flag
22-Dec-2024: It seems the challengers to Santissimo decided to pack up their ambitions and head for an early tea long before the Gr 1 HPSL Indian 2000 Guineas even began. On a sunny Sunday at Mahalakshmi, Pesi Shroff-trained Santissimo, piloted by English champion jockey Oisin Murphy, didn’t just win; he waltzed into the winner`s circle with the kind of ease that left the rest of the field wondering why they’d bothered to show up at all.

Democracy turns authoritarian; dictates terms in feature
27-Dec-2024: Democracy decided to stop living up to her name and took complete control in the 1400 metres Hyderabad Race Club Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of Friday’s Mumbai races. The speedy daughter of Acclaim, who had been on a prolonged sabbatical—382 days, but who’s counting? —finally remembered how to win a race. Prior to this performance, Democracy had been sleepwalking on the track, with her most recent “achievement” being a modest nine-length defeat behind Magileto just 12 days ago.

Geographique maps out Juliette`s downfall
29-Dec-2024: Karthik Ganapathy-trained Juliette, the "wonder mare" who had been scorching Indian tracks with her brilliance, found herself extinguished in the Gr 3 1800 metres Maharaja Jiwajirao Scindia Trophy, the feature event of Sunday’s Mumbai races. Bidding for a 10th straight win in what had been an otherwise glittering career, the eight-year-old darling of the turf came up against her kryptonite—or perhaps just reality—in the form of Imtiaz Sait trained Geographique.

Charlie surprises in Singhania with a fairytale finish
05-Jan-2025: Vinesh-trained Charlie turned Sunday’s Mumbai races into a theatre of surprises, scripting a dramatic upset in the 1400-meter Kailashpat Singhania Trophy, a feature race for horses rated 60 to 86. For a horse that hadn’t sniffed the winner’s circle in 645 days, Charlie seemed destined for the "Whatever Happened To" file, but he had other plans—most notably, making punters and experts alike eat their words.

Baby Bazooka fires on all cylinders
09-Jan-2025: Baby Bazooka, trained by Altamash Ahmed, finally decided to ditch her habit of napping at the gates and got it right when it mattered most. The mare, infamous for her chronic tardiness, managed to wake up on time under jockey Sandesh, proving that punctuality is, indeed, a virtue. Sandesh was also at his brilliant best in Timeless Vision in the R R Byramji Salver, a race named after the legendary trainer that Indian racing has seen. English jockey David Allan, returning to India after four years, had a winning start in his first ride..

Psychic Star dazzles as Usha Stud rewrites the rulebook
11-Jan-2025: The Indian Oaks, Usha Stud Farm, and trainer Pesi Shroff—horse racing’s most overplayed anthem—struck yet another chord of predictability, as Psychic Star cruised to victory in the Gr 1 Villoo Poonawalla Indian Oaks, the third classic of the season at Mahalakshmi on Saturday. This annual spectacle of dominance is less a competition and more a recurring episode in the long-running series titled Pesi’s Unstoppable Winning Streak. Swap out the horse, rinse, repeat. The race? A mere formality—like checking the box on inevitability.
David Allan guides Golden Thunder to a thunderous win
11-Jan-2025: British jockey David Allan seems to have an almost clairvoyant understanding of Indian racing. Not surprising, really, since he arrives on our shores like a winter migratory bird, only instead of chirping, he swoops in and collects silverware. Allan’s perfect race aboard Golden Thunder, trained by Karthik Ganapathy, ensured a resounding victory in the Gr 3 Ramniwas Ramnarain Ruia Gold Cup, a so-called "lead-up" race to the Indian Derby. Though, let’s be honest, calling it a “lead-up” is a stretch these days—especially when Derby favourite Santissimo skipped it altogether for what could generously be called a glorified practice jog.

El Greco records an encore in fine fashion
16-Jan-2025: Pradeep Chouhan-trained El Greco recorded his second consecutive win of the season—and his sixth overall—in the 1600 metres Karl Umrigar Salver, a race for horses rated 80 and above, which starred on a card so dull it could double as a cure for insomnia. With race days dwindling, the club now struggles to cobble together even seven races per day. It’s a situation that’s doing no favours for the sport.

Irish Gold has it easy in the Mathradas Trophy
23-Jan-2025: Sprint races in the highest category appear to have become the racing world`s equivalent of a deserted island—shockingly underpopulated. The 1200m Mathradas Goculdas Trophy, the supposed "feature event" of an otherwise uninspiring seven-race Thursday card at Mumbai, attracted the total of three runners. Yes, three. If it were a dinner party, the host might have cancelled. Jockey Sandesh had a big day, booting home four winners.

Time And Tide resurfaces, but Punters sink yet again
01-Feb-2025: Adhirajsingh Jodha-trained Time And Tide did what most punters can only dream of—bounced back from adversity—with a fluent win in the Gr 2 Dr S C Jain Sprinters Cup, a terms race for four-year-olds that served as the Derby eve appetizer on Saturday. The RWITC, ever the master of suspense, followed up this high-class contest with a card so uninspiring that picking winners was akin to solving a Rubik’s cube blindfolded.

Zuccaro Stuns, Smashes Record in Style
02-Feb-2025: If ever there was a lesson in redemption arcs, Pesi Shroff’s Zuccaro just delivered a masterclass. The same horse who had flopped so badly last time out—causing more head-scratching than a bad haircut—turned into an equine bulldozer at Mahalakshmi on Sunday. With English ace Oisin Murphy in the saddle, Zuccaro not only won the 2000-metre Eclipse Stakes of India, a terms race for four-year-olds and over, one of the highlights of the Derby Day programme, but did so with utter disdain.
Ranquelino triumphs in chaotic Indian Derby
02-Feb-2025: If you were expecting a textbook Derby where class, pedigree, and logic prevailed—well, think again. The Gr 1 HPSL Indian Derby at Mahalakshmi on Sunday turned into a chaotic spectacle that could give a Shakespearean tragedy a run for its money. The only thing that didn’t defy expectations was Bangalore Derby winner Ranquelino, bred at the Shapoor Mistry owend Manjri Stud Farm, who strutted onto the stage, unfazed by a grueling one-week turnaround, and coolly picked off his rivals as if they were practice cones on a morning gallop.

From Derby drama to Sunday snoozefest
09-Feb-2025: After the high-octane spectacle of the Indian Derby weekend, Sunday’s racing card seemed to have left its glitter at home—seven events of unremarkable thrills that even the most optimistic punter couldn’t call smooth sailing. The races featured a motley crew of favourites and long shots that promised excitement but delivered a rather pedestrian parade. Jockey Sandesh, riding a streak of dreamlike form, casually clinched three wins, with two victories shining almost solely on his dazzling performance.

Regal Command finally gets his timing right
16-Feb-2025: Karthik Ganapathy-trained Regal Command finally figured out the winning formula, notching up just his third victory from a rather eventful 33-race career in the Homi Mody Trophy (2400m), a race for horses rated 80 and above, which headlined Sunday’s Mumbai card. The seven-year-old, known for his impeccable talent in giving his rivals a generous head start before belatedly waking up to the race, found himself in an unusual position—actually in touch with the field, thanks to a three-horse crawl that ensured he wasn’t left with a Himalayan task.

Charlie leaves Dream Alliance in the cold
20-Feb-2025: Imtiaz Sait-trained Dream Alliance has long been a case study in misplaced optimism. The horse carries a name brimming with promise but has instead mastered the art of disappointing his backers—on one memorable occasion, even earning jockey Sandesh an unscheduled vacation. A moody character, Dream Alliance has to be coaxed, cajoled, and practically begged to gallop fluently, and when he does oblige, it’s usually good enough to finish second rather than actually win.

Suraj Narredu Does It Again, with Big Bay for company!
23-Feb-2025: At the end of the day, the size of the field was about as relevant as a weather report in a desert. The opposition didn’t matter. The pre-race predictions didn’t matter. Because when Suraj Narredu is in a big race, the outcome is usually already written—it’s just a matter of how far he wins by. Malesh Narredu’s Big Bay, built for speed and blessed with an amazing turn of foot, absolutely obliterated the opposition en route to a dazzling victory in the Gr 1 Poonawalla Breeders’ Multi-Million, the richest race for juveniles at Mahalakshmi on Sunday.
Pride Prince Steals the Spotlight in Kumar Dalal Trophy
23-Feb-2025: A three-horse race might sound like a casual morning canter, but the Kumar R Dalal Gold Trophy delivered a nail-biter. The trio ensured a thrilling finish. Imtiaz Sait’s Pride Prince silenced his doubters, holding off Chagall and the favourite Bashir to win the 1600m contest for horses rated 60 to 86. Held on Poonawalla Multi-Million race day at Mahalakshmi, this was one of the most competitive races on the card—even if the field size suggested otherwise.

A Tale of Familiar Faces and Predictable Plot Twists
26-Feb-2025: If you’re suffering from déjà vu, don’t worry—it’s just the highest category of racing at its finest, where the same group of horses run a round-robin tournament week after week, taking turns in the winner’s circle like it’s a friendly neighbourhood relay race. This Wednesday’s Rajpipla Trophy (1200m) for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of Mumbai races, was yet another rerun of “Which Dallas Todywalla Horse Wins Today?”

Golden Kingdom reigns supreme as Mojito flounders
06-Mar-2025: The competitive spirit is an endangered species at the races these days—except for the occasional outlier. Most races limp into existence thanks to ‘friendly’ entries, where the usual suspects show up more out of routine than any real ambition. And if it’s a race for top-rated horses, you can pretty much predict the script: the same cast, the same drama, with only a couple of runners actually meaning business. Adhirajsingh Jodha trained Golden Kingdom won the day’s feature, the R N Kanga Trophy.

Stormy Sea Wipes Out the Competition
16-Mar-2025: The Gr 3 Shapoorji Pallonji Breeders’ Juvenile Colts Championship was billed as a three-way clash between the well-backed Diego Garcia, Red Bishop, and Gunsmoke—but none of them saw the storm brewing on the horizon. Enter Stormy Sea, the Dashmesh Stud Farm-bred colt, who until now had pretty unimpressive. But on the big day, he flipped the script spectacularly. With Anthony Raj in the saddle, Stormy Sea unleashed a tempest, sweeping past the bewildered favourites and blowing the race wide open.

Credence Cruises to Hat-Trick, Leaves Rivals Stranded
20-Mar-2025: The Royal Western India Turf Club deserves a well-earned pat on the back (or perhaps a standing ovation, if you’re feeling generous) for hosting a media day where race cups are named after publications that have been promoting the sport. RWITC has always been a pioneer in so many aspects—unlike some clubs that believe media recognition is as unnecessary as blinkers on a retired warhorse.

S S Shah Bows Out After a Glorious Marathon Innings
23-Mar-2025: Veteran trainer S S Shah has called time on a remarkable career spanning 55 years—an era defined by excellence, grace, and an unwavering commitment to the sport. In that time, he not only saddled countless winners, including three Indian Derby triumphs, but also won the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him. Fittingly, his farewell to the sport was scripted in poetic fashion. Golden Rule, a horse bearing a name that reflected Shah’s very philosophy of life and racing, signed off his career with a thrilling victory.
