Anastasia makes impressive impact
12-Nov-2022: The outstation challengers do lend colour to the local racing but of late there have been one, too many. On Saturday, the opening day of the season. Witnessed three of them walking away with honours in the afternoon’s six-event card. The welcome doors need to be kept opened for the present, else one wants to see more cancellations, the kind that was witnessed on November 5, the advertised fixture for the start of the season that failed to see the daylight owing to paucity of entries.

Agnostic does the trick again
19-Nov-2022: Trainer Bharath Singh’s brilliant charge, Agnostic (Travor Patel-up), continues to dominate the RCTC home ground. On Saturday, the four-year-old easily claimed the prestigious Mayfowl Cup, over 1,400m, taking his in-a-row winning tally to five. The afternoon otherwise was in a vice like grip of the trainer-jockey combinations of Vijay Singh and Suraj Narredu who notched up a popular treble through Southern Lad, Leonardo and Monteverdi.

Success justifies odds in the 1000 Guineas
25-Nov-2022: Trainer Vijay Singh’s heavily fancied filly Success (Suraj Narredu-up) kept her date with the 1,600m Calcutta 1000 Guineas, a Grade III race, sponsored by Wolf777, which was the main attraction in Friday’s race card. The well-bred filly, by Havana Gold out of Columella, went to the start as a 7/10 hot favourite.

Imperial Power lifts 2000 Guineas
03-Dec-2022: Imperial Power, the 7/10 favourite from trainer Patrick Quinn’s stable, scored a decisive victory in the Wolf777 Calcutta 2000 Guineas , on Saturday. Ridden from the front by jockey Akshay Kumar, the Multidimensional-Majestic Opinion colt -- bred at the Usha Stud Farm -- did face some challenge from trainer Vijay Singh’s 7/2 fancied runner , Leonardo (Suraj Narredu) but the horse had nothing to offer, in terms of challenge, after a hot chase until the final turn. It was left to Leonardo’s stable-mate Monteverdie (P.S. Chauhan), who was also gallopping in a close attendance of the two public choices, to occupy the second berth while a late finishing outstation challenger placed third, ahead of Leonardo.

Success has it easy in the Oaks
26-Dec-2022: Trainer Vijay Singh’s firm favourite, Success (Suraj Narredu-up) scored a business-like victory in the 2,400m Ladies’ Derby, the Wolf777 Calcutta Oaks, at the RCTC’s race ground on Monday. Vijay had a firm grip on the seven-event card, finishing the afternoon with a well calculated Trophy treble. The trainer’s other winners were Leonardo (Anthony Raj), another Derby hopeful, and Dedicate (Suraj) who made a winning debut in the baby race, the B.M. Varma Memorial Cup. Brother, Bharath, too, matched Vijay’s tally of winners having saddled Silverita (Sujit Paswan), Mezcal (Trevor Patel) to victory in their respective events, and also Agnostic (Trevor) in the prestigious Army Cup.

Third Avenue does the trick again
01-Jan-2023: Trainer Arti Doctor’s trustworthy galloper, Third Avenue (P. Tajeshwar-up), scored yet again, and with authority, on Sunday, the New Year’s Day, to claim the WWW777 RCTC Gold Vase at the Calcutta race ground. Having already bagged a promising treble, and winning seven races from his career’s nine starts, the five-year-old’s fourth victory in a-a-row hardly came as a surprise.

Success lands Derby on Vijay Singh`s day
08-Jan-2023: Trainer Vijay Singh’s even-money favourite, Success (Suraj Narredu-up), kept her date with the 2,400m Wolf777 Calcutta Derby Stakes, here, on Sunday. The half-a-length victory of the Havana Gold-Columela daughter, over trainer James McKeown’s long-shot, Trevalius (Trevor Patel), may have silenced her critics, suspecting the favourite’s capacity to take two long distance Classics in her stride.

Agnostic makes it seven in-a-row
18-Jan-2023: Trainers Bharath Singh’s horse Agnostic (Trevor Patel-up) churned out another victory, his seventh in-a-row as the 4/10 hot favourite went on to win the 1,200m Calcutta Champions’ Sprint Trophy, a Grade III race, that took the center stage in Wednesday’s seven-event card. The horse’s victory margin, of a length and a quarter, may not tell the entire tale but eye-witnesses and critics, too, to the massive show of power were left an impressive lot.

A Star Is Born beats over-exposed Success
23-Jan-2023: Calcutta: The South India-based trainer Rajesh Narredu’s champion galloper, A Star Is Born (Suraj Narredu-up) scored a thumping victory over the Classy Vijay Singh’s filly, Success (Imran Chisty), on his way to claiming the cash rich, Grade I event, the 2,000m Coromandel Indian Champion Cup, the chief attraction at the Calcutta races on Monday. In the process of lifting the Champion Cup, the winner, an 18/10 favourite, also exposed the brave heart filly Success, who had two Derbys under her belt – the Monsoon and the Winter, besides the Calcutta Oaks and the 1000 Guineas. Success also indicated that she may have wilted under pressure because of the quick successions she was asked to perform against the proven masculine power.

Favourites fully justify their odds
28-Jan-2023: Trainer Vijay Singh’s filly, Arabian Queen (Suraj Narredu-up) -- last outing’s convincing winner -- delivered the goods again in a compact eight-horse field, lined up for the 1,400m Police Commissioner’s Cup, Saturday’s main attraction. However, the Win Legend daughter was fully tested, on this occasion, by Bharath Singh’s mare, Silverita (Sujit Paswan) who boasted of winning three races in a row.

Monfortino shines on Armed Forces` Day
02-Feb-2023: Trainer Vijay Singh’s 6/1 shot, Monfortino (Imran Chisty-up) scored a narrow victory over Aashay Doctor’s strongly fancied runner, Hidden Gold (Akshay Kumar), to win Thursday’s main attraction, the 1,200m Eastern Command Cup. A small but compact six-event card, therefore, turned out to be quite exciting and enjoyable one in view of tough competition in most of events. Vijay, however, was among winners again and as he scored a treble. The trainer’s other winners were Yazh and Tycoonist -- both partnered by the champion saddle artist, Suraj Narredu.

However, Cliffhanger collapsed and died following a cardiac arrest on his way back to the unsaddling areas. Another runner, Mandeville (Dashrath S) also met the same fate, at about 1000m from the winning post.

Meropi carves a handsome win in the Million
18-Feb-2023: Trainer Aashay Doctor’s filly Meropi (YS Srinath-up) easily bagged the 1,600m Calcutta Million on Saturday. Expectations were very high from the filly to win in the RCTC’s racing calendar’s only Million, having already claimed each of the two major juvenile events like the Indian Produce Stakes and the Champagne Stakes rather easily. The 2/10 hot property in the ante-post betting had already indicated before the start of the race that the game was over, literally, for all practical purposes.

Summer Night makes Governor’s Cup a pillar-to-post affair
23-Feb-2023: To say that trainer Bharath Singh’s 6/1 shot Summer Night (Dashrath Singh-up) won the 1,600m Governor’s Cup at the Calcutta races on Thursday , it will be an under-statement. The six-year-old complimented himself when he simply made short work the opposition. The Night of Thunder son settled himself up-front in the seven-horse field as the top-weighted meaty performer named Awesome One (Neeraj Rawal) settled right behind with The Protector (Imran Chisty) in a close striking position.
