Imtiaz Sait trained Flying Visit brought off a long shot win in the 1600 metres R N Kanga Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above, the feature event of Sunday`s evening races at the Mahalakshmi. The eight-year-old gelding Flying Visit has been a fairly decent performer having won eight of the 31 outings prior to this race. Though in the last two efforts, he had run forward races, the win against the younger lot was entirely unexpected more so for the ease with which the horse won. The last win of Flying Visit had come exactly a year ago.

The well-backed Count of Savoy attempted to win the race with a start-to-finish tactic but down the final furlong, could not sustain the lead as Flying Visit, coming from the rear through the shortest way, picked up momentum and sailed past the front-runner to record an emerge an easy winner. In Contention who was also in strong betting never gave hopes of justifying the favouritism and was a tame third. The six-year-old mare reportedly burst her blood vessels. Knight Templar who was tailed off last also bled during the race.

Pradeep Chouhan drove out Vinesh trained Charlie for a facile win in the 1600 metres Byram N Jeejeebhoy Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Backed strongly to oblige on the basis of a narrow defeat in his last effort, Charlie proved equal to the task, coming with a powerful surge from way off the past, to sweep past those in front to win by a widening margin of three lengths. Own Voice too rallied well from the penultimate position to edge out the more fancied stablemate Flying Scotsman from the runner-up berth. Souza who led from the start weakened to finish fourth.

Shiraz Sunderji trained Ameerah justified the one-sided support to win the 1200 metres World`s Oldest Barbar Trophy, a race for maiden three-year-olds, with a degree of comfort. Goddes of Dawn led the field from the start with Sandesh easing up Ameerah in about the fourth or fifth position till turning for home. Ameerah who was travelling well within himself gathered steam in the stretch and took the gap between She`s A Teaser and Giant King like a matured horse and then overhauled the front-runner quite easily. Endurance came up with a late bid but the favourite had enough legs to reach the safety of the post sparing more than a length at the finish. She`s A Teaser was third ahead of long-time leader Goddes of Dawn.

Trainer Rehanullah Khan who was going through a lean patch had a winner through seven-year-old Moment of Madness who benefitted from the forward runs and accounted for the opposition in the 1000 metres Kusumben Dhirubhai Shah Trophy (Div I), a race for horses in the lowest category quite capably. Apprentice Haridas Gore got Moment of Madness to produce a winning gallop down the final furlong to measure the front-running Zukor. Zukor and Red Riot disputed the lead from the start with Zukor taking charge at the top of the straight but was unable to keep the lead going for long. Moment of Madness won capably from Fidato who showed some spark while chasing the winner to the post. The lower division of the race was won by Shazaan Shah trained Lord Murphy in a tight finish from late rallying Arbitrage. Lord Murphy opened at a short price but the odds drifted out which put a question mark in the minds of the people. Lord Murphy produced a good burst of speed in the final furlong and shaped to win comfortably but slackened in the shadow of the post. Arbitrage who made a big rally along the rails narrowly failed to overhaul the favourite who held on grimly. Lady was a close third. There was an objection from Praveen Shinde who rode Lady Di against Zervan who rode the winner for interference but the same was overruled as not having enough substance.

Subhag Singh trained Majorella Blue had won his last outing in a smart time and looked capable of an encore in the 1200 metres Sir Charles Forbes Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. However, the betting was centred around My Princess who was a short-priced horse. In the event, Majorella Blue who chased Hela deep into the straight managed to get the better of the front-runner close to home to record a win at big odds. Tyrone Black showed some spark while finishing third. My Princess was not spotted at the busy end.

After running the second four times in a row, Waheed trained Willy Wonkaa had broken the jinx last time out. However, very few expected Willy Wonkaa to record an encore as the betting was confined to three horses namely Brave Beauty, Alpha Domino, and Whatisinaname. Alpine Star led the field deep into the final furlong and Alpha Domino perhaps expended all his energy in overhauling the front-runner so much so that when Brave Beauty and Willy Wonkaa charged home, Alpha Domino had no reserves. Will Wonka prevailed by half a length, with another long neck separating Alpha Domino who had to settle for third place. Alpha Domino looked one-paced and perhaps his prospects may have been better served to exploit his stamina by making all the running.

S S Shah trained Rhythm of Nature had run more than 20 lengths behind the winner in her last outing and as such, her remarkable improvement in 21 days came as a big shock in the 1400 metres Indian Navy Trophy, a race for horses rated 20 to 46. Rhythm of Nature led from the start and looked vulnerable when Campaign moved with big strides down the final furlong. However, the front-runner pulled away, in the end, to win with a measure of comfort. Favourite Treasure Gold ran late to save place money.
