Ashoka gallops to victory with dominant performance

By: Tippu Sultan   August 27 , 2024

Donald Netto-trained Ashoka, a consistent performer on the local circuit, once again demonstrated why he`s considered one of the best horses on the local circuit that are currently racing. Fresh off an impressive victory over subsequent winner Siddharth in his last outing, Ashoka lived up to his top billing under jockey Suraj Narredu, effortlessly securing his sixth win in 13 starts at Malakpet on Monday. After a less than stellar winter season where he failed to win a single race, Ashoka came back sharp and focused, showing his class and readiness to win.

In a compact field of six, Ashoka was the clear favorite, with only Ashwa Morocco seen as a potential challenger, according to the betting odds. Best Buddy, true to his style, set the early pace, taking the field along with Malaala positioned on his outside and Ashoka comfortably nestled along the rails in third. As the horses rounded the final turn, Malaala drifted wide, giving Ashoka the perfect opening to move closer to the front-running Best Buddy.

When Suraj Narredu asked Ashoka to make his move, the response was electric. Ashoka surged forward, leaving his rivals in the dust, and clinched the race well before the finish line. Malaala found a second wind to secure the runner-up spot, narrowly holding off a fast-finishing Strauss. Best Buddy faded to fourth, while Ashwa Morocco failed to fire, finishing well behind.

Ananth Vatsalya is having a stellar season, consistently delivering results with the small string of horses under his care. His three-year-old filly Imperia continued her impressive form, winning back-to-back races and fully justifying the strong support she received in the betting ring. Equally favored was Leo D`Silva-trained Glorious Power, who also drew significant attention. Interestingly, Leo had a dominant presence with six runners in the field, but it was clear that Imperia was the main threat. In fact, the six positions behind Imperia were all occupied by horses from Leo`s stable.

Glorious Power took the lead from the start, with Santa Barbara pressing close behind. Meanwhile, jockey Ajeeth Kumar held Imperia in a patient third position. At the final turn, Ajeeth skillfully guided Imperia to the outside for a clear run, and the filly responded with an impressive burst of speed. She swiftly overtook the leading duo to secure a commanding win. Glorious Power held on for second, just ahead of Santa Barbara. The other two runners in the field, both trained by Prasad Raju, seemed more interested in shedding weight than competing, finishing at the bottom of the table.

Ravinder Singh-trained Carnival Lady pulled off a major upset in the 1400-metre Kamareddy Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 40 to 65. With a field that already looked tricky, featuring True Icon from the same yard and Shah of Iran, along with Role Model, the race was wide open. Despite Carnival Lady`s recent win, the five-year-old mare, with just three wins from 33 starts, wasn`t heavily backed in the betting market as her wins had come in the lower category. Classical Music set a blistering early pace but faded after leading the field into the homestretch. Shah of Iran then took the lead, but Carnival Lady, who had been trailing, made a remarkable surge around the final turn. Moving wide into the straight, she displayed such power that apprentice jockey Shivansh barely needed to urge her on. Carnival Lady surged past Shah of Iran to claim a comfortable victory, with D Yes Boss running on to secure third place, just ahead of True Icon.

A. Imran Khan-trained Armstrong was an emphatic winner in the lower division of the Kamareddy Plate. Strongly backed to win, Armstrong, under jockey Suraj Narredu, took charge from the start and broke away decisively in the final furlong to clinch an easy victory over Brooklyn Beauty, who found the winner too formidable to catch. Wallop And Gallop made a late surge to edge out Fortunatus for the third spot.
Ravinder Singh trained NRI Ultrapowr recorded a dramatic win in the 1600 metres Bhupalpally Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45 and justified the favouritism. The supporters of NRI Ultrapower would have had their heart in the throat when Ultrapower took a poor start and trailed the last start by several lengths. Jockey Akshay Kumar was undeterred and unhurried as he patiently worked the horse to move up gradually and brought the horse in the middle of the field in the homestretch. NRI Ultrapower produced a powerful brust of speed and sailed past Indian Temple and Voice of a Dream in the final 100 metres to win with a measure of comfort from late rallying See My Attitude. Voice Of A Dream was third ahead of Indian Temple.

In an exciting showdown for the 1200 metres Silver Phantom Plate (Div I), a race for maiden three-year-olds, Gatiman from Magan Singh Parmar`s stable and Verrazzano from Satish Narredu`s yard were both equally favored to win. Right from the start, Gatiman displayed blistering speed under jockey Mukesh Kumar, quickly opening up a substantial lead. As the field thundered down the stretch, Verrazzano began his late charge, starting more than six lengths behind the front-runner. Despite a strong finish by Verrazzano, Gatiman held on to claim victory by a diminishing margin of half a length. NRI Northpower finished a distant third, unable to match the pace of the top two.

In the lower division of the Silver Phantom Plate, it was all about Flying Fury, trained by Robin Reddy Kondakalla. Backed heavily at cramped odds, Flying Fury stayed relaxed in the sixth or seventh position early on as Diabolo set the pace. However, once jockey Naresh asked for an effort, Flying Fury responded with a powerful surge on the wide outside. The favorite quickly swept past the leaders and powered away to win by an impressive seven lengths. Freedom Speed came in second, followed by Diabolo, who couldn`t keep up with the top two.
