Ranquelino vs. Redefined vs. Dyf – Or an Upset?

  March 2 , 2025

With horses dropping out left, right, and centre—either due to injury, retirement, or the simple realization that racing is hard work—the Indian Turf Invitation Cup at Chennai on Sunday presents us with a puzzle only slightly easier than quantum physics. The main contenders stepping into the limelight (willingly or by default) are Indian Derby winner Ranquelino, Pune Derby victor Redefined, and last year`s Stayers` Cup champion Dyf, who got a last-minute promotion to this race after Zuccaro bowed out post a training setback in Bangalore.

Now, tradition would have us believe that the Indian Derby winner typically carries the momentum to Invitation Cup glory. Recent Derby winners have been more prone to setbacks, fatigue, and sheer bad luck—case in point, last year`s champ Enabler, who tragically succumbed to a serious infection upon reaching Kolkata. A cautionary tale, if ever there was one.

If you`re searching for precedent, trainer Padmanabhan seems to have mastered the art of the Derby-Invitation Cup double, with In The Spotlight and Desert God pulling off this elusive feat. Interestingly, Desert God achieved it in Chennai—a fact that Ranquelino and his connections will be clinging to like a lifeline. Alaindair`s name is another one etched in the recent annals of this rare accomplishment, and if we stretch back further, Southern Regent and a select few have also stamped their class on both races. The list isn`t exhaustive but highlights the more recent winners of the Derby-Invitation Cup double.

Ranquelino, the son of Fiero, has already run roughshod over his contemporaries, collecting the Bangalore 2000 Guineas, Bangalore Derby, and Indian Derby like souvenirs. With both stamina and speed in his arsenal—a rare luxury in a sport where most can barely master one—he now eyes the grand prize. The big question: Can he make history and add his name to this elite club?

Enter Redefined, a talented runner who won the Pune Derby before taking an extended hiatus—because what`s a classic campaign without an unscheduled break? The reason? He was gelded. Yes, nothing like a little mid-career reconfiguration to keep things interesting. Back with the benefit of a mock race, he recently played second fiddle to Ranquelino, but now, with English ace David Allan in the saddle, the camp believes he`s ready to flip the script. Meanwhile, Sandesh sticks with Ranquelino, presumably hoping for a repeat performance.

Then we have Dyf, the workhorse of the bunch, boasting nine wins and an equal number of runner-up efforts from 22 outings. He`s been there, done that, and picked up plenty of placings along the way—plus, he`s already tasted Derby success in Chennai. The Cougar Mountain progeny may not be flashy, but he`s reliable, and in horse racing, that counts for plenty.

Throw in last year`s South India Derby winner Touch of Grey, who seems to be in the midst of a mid-career crisis but did finish second in last year`s Invitation Cup, and the fast-finishing Positano and we`ve got ourselves a head-scratcher of a contest.

In racing, it`s downright reckless to ignore the so-called "outsiders"—because if history has taught us anything, it`s that the most dangerous horse is the one nobody saw coming. Champions Way may have lost his way since last year`s Golconda Derby triumph, but he`s still proven over this distance. Mandarino bagged the Mysore Derby and hit the board in the Bangalore Derby, while Duke of Tuscany snatched the Golconda Derby and held his own in the Indian Derby. Rodney was a whisker away from winning the South India Derby, Pyrite shocked everyone by running a blinder behind Ranquelino in the Indian Derby, and Queen of Kings was crowned in the Bangalore Oaks.

So, what does all this mean? Simple—just when you think you`ve narrowed it down, the picture gets even blurrier. Ranquelino, Redefined, and Dyf have the most compelling resumes, but in racing, consistency isn`t a guarantee—it`s just a tempting illusion.

For punters, the eternal question remains: do you trust form, bank on potential, or just shut your eyes and stab at a name? Either way, hindsight will make fools of us all—but until the gates crash open, we can all pretend we`ve got it figured out.

It could be Pasitano, the one who was drifting out from rails to outer , during the finish and still finished close third. It can stay, it can finish fast and it has the same connections with Redefined and Ranquileno.
