Redefined triumphs even as MRC forced to define its future

  March 2 , 2025

While the grand spectacle of the Gr 1 HPSL Indian Turf Invitation Cup unfolded at the Madras Race Course on Sunday, the air was thick with irony—because even as the champions were crowned, the very ground they raced on stood at the edge of extinction. But first, let`s talk about the race.

Prasanna Kumar-trained Redefined, who had played the bridesmaid to Ranquelino in the Bangalore Derby back in January, proved that nothing refreshes tired legs quite like a well-timed vacation. While his rivals carried the wear-and-tear of battle, Redefined galloped in with the energy of a horse that had just returned from a retreat, making the opposition look like extras in his one-horse show. The Manjri Stud Farm-bred gelding, already a Pune Derby winner, looked an entirely different beast—one that had this race wrapped up long before the finish line.

And then there was David Allan—the magician in the saddle—whose mere presence is enough to send punters into a frenzy. The visiting jockey, a certified crowd favorite, rode a tactical masterpiece, as expected, adding yet another Invitation Cup to his decorated CV, having last won it aboard Desert God. After the race, even Allan admitted to being surprised at how ridiculously easy the win was, though he did acknowledge that "fresh legs" probably played a part.

Meanwhile, Ranquelino, the celebrated Derby double winner, turned into a shadow of himself, barely managing to keep pace before running out of gas like a car that forgot to fuel up before a long drive. His dominance of a few weeks ago felt like a distant memory as he faded into the pack.

As for the owners of Redefined—well, let`s just say Lady Luck seems to have them on speed dial. The winning connections featured Kamesh from the “Knotty” gang, serial Derby collector Ashok Ranpise, RWITC Chairman Surendra Sanas, Stewards Chairman Ram Shroff, and a host of others who seem to have mastered the art of being in the right winner`s circle at the right time.

But while the winners reveled in their moment of glory, a dark cloud loomed over the historic Madras Race Club. Hosting the Invitation Cup ahead of schedule wasn`t just an administrative reshuffle—it was a final lap before the lights go out. The Tamil Nadu government`s determination to reclaim the land has put the future of racing here in serious jeopardy. Sure, racing might limp on for another year, but with no confirmed alternative venue, the club`s future is as uncertain as a long shot at the tote.

Despite the weekend being a nostalgic celebration of an iconic venue, the harsh reality is that racing at Guindy is on borrowed time. Plans for relocation remain as vague as a bookmaker`s promise, and while the government`s intentions are set in cold stone, the club`s future is written in vanishing ink.

For now, the Invitation Cup winners will savor their triumph, but beneath the surface, the mood is anything but celebratory. The roar of hooves may soon be replaced by the silence of an abandoned track, and history, as always, will simply move on.

Coming back to the race, Ranquelino started as the strong favorite, but let`s be honest—even his biggest backers weren`t entirely convinced that he had enough gas left in the tank to pull off a hat-trick of big-race wins in such a short span. As skepticism grew, so did his odds, expanding by race time.

Meanwhile, the seasoned warhorse Dyf, a proven marathon specialist, attracted plenty of support despite the nagging reality that a mile-and-a-half might be a bit too brisk for his grinding style. And then there was Redefined, left to loiter in the betting ring like an uninvited guest, his odds ballooning beyond 7-1, as if the punters had collectively decided that his chances were nothing more than a distant dream.

As the gates flew open, Champions Way assumed the thankless job of pace-setting, leading the pack into the grueling mile-and-a-half journey. Shubankar, Rodney, Queen of Kings, Galahad, Touch of Grey, Pyrite, and Redefined formed the chasing pack, with Ranquelino biding his time in midfield. The reliable Dyf, Duke of Tuscany, and Mandarino were tucked away at the back, waiting for the right moment to spring into action.

The race saw its fair share of mid-race musical chairs, with the rear guard reshuffling positions as they approached the home turn. Touch of Grey momentarily seized command, but Redefined—having enjoyed a first-class, trouble-free passage—was ready to drop the hammer. David Allan, with his usual precision, barely had to ask as Redefined loomed large, galloping into the straight like a horse that had just realized the race had begun.

As soon as Redefined hit the front, it was game over. The lesser-fancied runner stormed clear, leaving the rest of the field in varying states of distress. Ranquelino, once hailed as a superstar, hit the proverbial wall, running out of steam so suddenly that one had to wonder if he`d accidentally left his engine back in Bangalore.

Dyf, true to his warrior spirit, launched a spirited run, while Duke of Tuscany, emerging from nowhere, picked off stragglers with a powerful finishing burst. On the wide outside, Positano made his presence felt, but by then, Redefined had already checked into a different postal code.

The real battle was now for minor placings, where Dyf used every ounce of his staying prowess to edge out his owner-mate Duke of Tuscany for second place. Positano ran on gamely to finish in a blanket for fourth, while the rest of the field faded into the sunset, their Invitation Cup dreams left scattered across the track.

The Madras Race Track and Shamrock—a love story that just refuses to fade. The Satish Narredu-trained runner once again transformed into an entirely different beast at his favorite hunting ground, producing a blistering gallop to claim the Gr 1 Major P K Mehra Memorial Super Mile, a terms race for four-year-olds and over, and one of the day`s main attractions.

It`s almost comical how Shamrock, who often flatters to deceive on his home turf in Bangalore, suddenly becomes a track-loving monster the moment he steps onto Chennai`s surface—often against all logical expectations. But this time, his stunning upset wasn`t just about his affinity for the track. It was a masterclass in race riding by Suraj Narredu, whose cunning tactics ensured that the script played out in Shamrock`s favor.

The race had a clear favorite in Santissimo, though murmurs about a possible wind issue (and a potential operation looming) cast slight doubts. African Gold was the second choice, while the rest—including Shamrock, dismissed as a long shot after his last lackluster run in Bangalore—were expected to simply make up the numbers.

Trevor Patel, aboard African Gold, took the early initiative, but rather uncertain of how much fuel to burn, opted for a moderate lead. Shamrock slotted in behind, while Santissimo, eased along the rails, bided his time.

But here`s where Suraj Narredu`s tactical brilliance came into play. Knowing that Santissimo needed room to launch his challenge, Suraj made sure that his horse was positioned to keep his rival boxed in. Santissimo could only get a clear run when Shamrock moved ahead—or conveniently drifted out.

By the final furlong, Suraj had executed his plan to perfection, driving Shamrock to the front. Oisin Murphy, now finally able to ask Santissimo the big question, threw everything into a desperate charge. But it was too little, too late. Shamrock, despite tiring, clung on grimly to win by just under a length, leaving room for endless debates over what might have been if Murphy had found daylight earlier.

African Gold plugged on for third, finishing ahead of Iron Clad, but in the end, the race belonged to Shamrock, Suraj, and a perfectly executed ambush.
