A major controversy has erupted after as many as seven horses from the Narredu stables were withdrawn post-declarations due to the administration of medication. The mandatory stand-down period before they could be cleared to race had not been completed — a glaring oversight that has exposed deep cracks in the system.
Several of these runners, including Excellent Lass, Gloriousness, Midnight Blue, Assurances, Stentorian, Super Sapphire, and Priceless Prince, were leading contenders and expected to make a serious impact. Ironically, some of them had been cleared to run the previous Sunday, but races were cancelled due to unsafe track conditions following heavy rain.
This isn`t just a routine withdrawal list — it`s an administrative fiasco. The blame lies squarely with the trainers involved, but the Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) cannot escape scrutiny either. It is his department`s responsibility to inform the racing department in advance about any veterinary-administered medication, regardless of its nature and ensure that horses under treatment have completed the mandatory stand out period. Shockingly, no red flags were raised — the issue only came to light after the trainers themselves disclosed it.
The CVO, who is often known to come down heavily on trainers, has in this case failed to act when it mattered most. Will the Club now have the integrity to send these horses for sampling to clear any lingering doubts? Transparency is essential — if left unanswered, speculation will fester.
This incident is just one more symptom of a deeper malaise. The administration appears to be in shambles, with interference from committee members who seem more invested in shielding their favourites than in upholding the sport`s credibility. Time and again, Stipendiary Stewards have initiated strong charges against professionals, only to see them diluted or dismissed entirely during Steward enquiries. Having a soft spot is one thing — being a silent protector is quite another.
Integrity and indulgence cannot ride the same horse.
The sport is bleeding enthusiasts, and scripted results are rapidly becoming the norm rather than the exception. If the authorities wish to restore faith, they must act decisively and without fear or favour. This includes keeping a healthy professional distance from the very individuals they`re meant to supervise — not share betting slips with them. Stewards and officials must remember: as long as they hold office, even the slightest whiff of betting compromises their credibility.
