Margaretta Makes a Mockery of the Opposition

  June 14 , 2026

Pesi Shroff-trained Margaretta not only captured the Gr 1 Zavaray S. Poonawalla Fillies` Championship Stakes in the expected fashion, she did so with such disdainful ease that the rest of the field appeared to be participating in an entirely different race. Her breathtaking last-to-first triumph underlined the vast gulf that separates her from her contemporaries and confirmed that she belongs in the rarefied air reserved for genuine Classic stars.

Shroff`s expected domination of the Classics this season was hardly a state secret. With the Bangalore brigade having lost an entire racing season and consequently arriving short on experience, the scales were already tilted heavily in favour of the Mumbai contingent. Yet Margaretta`s performance was about far more than merely beating an underprepared opposition. It was a display of class, versatility and acceleration that marked her out as an exceptional filly with the Bangalore Derby firmly within her sights.

What made the victory even more impressive was her adaptability. She had already shown her prowess on Mumbai`s firm surface, but many wondered whether Bangalore`s rain-softened track would blunt her brilliance. Instead, Margaretta treated the change of venue and conditions as minor inconveniences. She floated over the yielding ground as comfortably as she had skimmed over the harder Mumbai tracks, proving that great horses do not ask for ideal conditions, they create them.

Sent off a prohibitively short-priced favourite, Margaretta never gave her supporters a moment of genuine concern. Vivek settled her at the rear as Vortex set the pace. Turning for home, she briefly looked in danger of finding herself trapped behind runners. For lesser horses, that might have been a problem. For Margaretta, it was merely a short commercial break. The instant a gap appeared, she shot through like a tracer bullet, producing a devastating turn of foot that left her rivals floundering. The race was over in a matter of strides and the winning margin scarcely reflected her superiority. Another Mumbai challenger Havoc finished second ahead of Starzella.

James McKeown-trained Ravishing Queen made a highly impressive winning debut in the 1100 metres Treasure Girl Plate with a commanding pillar-to-post performance. Garzian, armed with the advantage of race fitness, chased gamely but never looked likely to threaten, while Auspicious Queen shaped promisingly to finish third.

Irfan Ghatala-trained Stalingrad proved far too strong in the 2000 metres Kranji Plate for horses rated 20 to 45. Aravind Kumar rode a patient race, keeping the fancied runner tucked away before unleashing him on the bend. Once asked for an effort, Stalingrad settled matters long before the winning post came into view. Storm Shadow was second and Azalea third, while pace-setter Fiks De France faded out of contention.

The mile-long Malenahalli Plate for the lowest category horses provided its own subplot when heavily-backed favourite Michiko was withdrawn at the gates, leaving punters wondering whether fate had saved them or robbed them. In the end, Tyaaraa came from the clouds to snatch victory from Sea Diamond in the shadow of the post and provide relief to those who had stayed loyal. Agape finished third.

The defeat of Elysium added another chapter to the increasingly uncomfortable tale of failed favourites from the yard of trainer Sulaiman Attaollahi. After Stellantis forced the pace and weakened, Crosswater took charge and established what proved to be a decisive advantage. Elysium`s late flourish arrived when the winner was already counting the prize money. Star Studded finished third.

Neil Devaney-trained Bellavita produced a sparkling late burst under apprentice Sachin to collar the long-time leader Aquastic close home and justify strong market support. Small Dreams finished a distant third, over five lengths behind the runner-up.

The final two races were abandoned after persistent rain rendered the track unsuitable for further racing, bringing proceedings to a premature close.
