Vijay Singh strikes on New Year’s Day

By: Goldie Boy   January 1 , 2022

Trainer Vijay Singh was among winners on Sunday, the New Year`s Day. The champion schooler saddled four winners in the afternoon`s nine-event card. However, the most satisfying victory must have been that of his filly named Tuscany (Hindu Singh-up) – by Roderic O`Connor out of Isn`t She Special – who claimed the 1,200m Indian Produce Stakes, which is, normally, considered as a pointer towards those who are expected to be Classic materials for the next season. The other important winner Vijay had to his name was Legendary Striker (C.S. Jodha), who picked up the 1,200m The Telegraph Cup. Further, the crafty trainer also won the two divisions of the 1,100m Accalia Handicap. There were a total of four trophy events in day`s race card, including the 2,200m betindiaraces.com Indian Gold Vase that was an easy pick for trainer Rutherford Alford`s charge Redoubtable (P. Ajeet Kumar) while the 2,000m 91.9 Friends FM Cup that was annexed by the Bharath Singh`s less fancied runner, Suestado (Neeraj Rawal).

Tuscany`s successful effort to beat the course-favourite, Social Truth (Jodha), by about a length also paid compliments to the later. The Manvendra Singh-trained colt was a runaway winner in his maiden outing, and thus was set to concede 5.5kg, by the terms of the race. The Planetaire – Gimmesumsgant son, a half brother to the celebrated filly, was, therefore not disgraced in defeat. Jodha did find the early pace too fast and was having to work on Social Truth, midway through the trip. Social Truth was also seen shifting out inside the last furlong, though covering ground fast. Yet the youngster managed give the winner a fright. The popular opinion was that Social Truth would have relished an extra furlong but it being Tuscany`s maiden outing, he is also expected to improve in the coming weeks. More importantly, with some maturity, the filly may continue to maintain her dominance, unless a better performed horse emerges from their ranks.

In the same race, Vijay`s other colt, Bold Style, was an impressive third. Giving an impression of ideal mix of speed and stamina. He is expected to keep the racing baron`s, late MAM Ramaswamy`s famed colours of ‘Gold and brown belt` flying.

You talk about MAM and he is there. Legendary Striker (Jodha), the 4/10 hot property, sporting MAM`s colours, made his task simpler in the 1,200m The Telegraph Cup, a major sponsorship partner at the New Year`s Day races. The Be Safe son hit the front from the start of the race, and there was no stopping of the four-year-old, 250m from home to present Vijay a virtual gift in the mouth.

Melody, a four-year-old filly, ridden by another visiting jockey N.S.Parmar, had opened the Vijay`s day`s account. A 6/1 chance, Melody literally won the upper division of the 1,100m Accalia Handicap in the manner Legendary Striker was to follow, later in the afternoon. The only difference being the verdicts – Melody`s two lengths was a poor match against Legendary Striker`s 5 long lengths.

The lower division of the Accalia Handicap was claimed by Vijay`s For Evermore (Hindu) in a very impressive manner. The 17/20 clear favourite was running in the mid-division when trainer Vikash Jaiswal`s Nandini`s Pet (app Hasib Alam), the long time leader, was being hailed as a winner--in comes For Evermore from nowhere with electrifying finish on the wide out, 60m from home to retire as a comfortable winner.

There is nothing to write home about Redoubtable`s (Ajeet Kumar) victory in the 2,200m RCTC Gold Vase. The 8/10 favourite looked a winner at every post to ultimately carve a near 10-length victory over Christopher Alford`s Reno Star (app Abhay Singh).

Bharath`s top-weighted runner, Suestado (Neeraj) waited behind early leader Vanguard (Chethan Gowda) -- the 2/1 favourite with Deemed To Fire (Jodha) – and Raqs Sharqi (Rupal Singh) till about the distance post before shooting into the winning lead and to hold the favourite, who was again brought with a second wind,

For the records: Trainer Aashay Doctor`s Cape Tanaros (Neeraj) who made a late debut at the age of four, scored a decisive victory over another debutante, Devushka (S. Zervan) , in the day`s opener, the 1,200m Retained Asset Handicap.

Finally, curtain was brought down after the western India migrant, Tigrio`s (R,S, Bhati) fluent victory over the monsoon season`s Stakes winner, Agnostic (Neeraj). In the same race, the last winter`s Derby winner, Black Pearl (Jodha), again Cut a sorry figure to warn ‘Touch Me Not.`
