King`s Ransom wins like a true champion

  December 11 , 2022

Pesi Shroff trained King`s Ransom once again asserted her class as she tackled the opposition with disdain breezing away for an impressive win in the Betway Gr 1 Indian 1000 Guineas, the first classic of the season on Sunday. The fact that she had made immense progress since her Pune Derby was evidenced by the ease with which she beat her adversary Dangerous. Jockey Pradeep Chouhan was confidence personified, waiting deep into the straight before unleashing King`s Ransom with the patented burst of speed.

There is no doubt that King`s Ransom rates as the best three-year-old filly in the country. The long Mumbai straight suits her to the hilt. The daughter of Multidimensional has no issue with stamina and she is also blessed with a powerful turn of foot which makes her a potent force. It remains to be seen if Pesi Shroff is tempted to run her in the next week`s Indian 2000 Guineas.

Though Dangerous had run King`s Ransom close in the Pune Derby, racegoers were convinced that the Pesi Shroff trainee would be seen in a much better light. King`s Ransom had won the Pune Derby without the benefit of a race run. The confidence of the punters was reflected in the ring where bookmakers offered miserly odds where as they were very generous with the odds on Dangerous.

King`s Ransom`s stablemate Thunberg did the job of pace-setting and got the privilege of enjoying an uncontested which perhaps also helped her to run above expectations. Pradeep Chouhan settled King`s Ransom in about the sixth position behind Dangerous while Faith brought up the rear. Thunberg enjoyed a healthy lead deep into the final furlong. King`s Ransom had some leeway to cover but the moment Chouhan set alight King`s Ransom, the favourite came home with a thundering run and was hailed a winner a long way from home, sparing two lengths at the finish with something more on hand. Thunberg held off Dangerous who was surprisingly off-colour, finishing a disappointing third. Sierra Del Plata who is yet to win a race ran on to fill up the frame.

The prolific performer from trainer Imtiaz Sait`s yard, Iron Age left behind the poor performance of his last run at Pune where he had run way below par as he bounced back to record an emphatic 17th win of his career from 30 outings in the 1200 metres Mahalakshmi Sprint Million, a terms race for three-year-olds and over. Iron Age had never failed whenever he had a free, uncontested run in the front and every time he enjoyed this luxury, he has simply proved to be unbeatable. Leopard Rock who had finished well ahead of Iron Age in their last encounter was the favourite with the latter going to the post at good odds. Trevor Patel had Iron Age dictate the pace and the progeny of Strong Suit enjoyed his foray in the front and had the race well sewn up a long way from home by getting an unassailable lead by the final furlong. The others who were in the chase had considerable leeway to make up. Trevor was not required to be too aggressive on Iron Age as he checked in comfortably ahead of the favourite Leopard Rock who made a late rally. Market King and Fast Rain filled up the frame. Joaquim who gave a chase to Iron Age from the beginning tired out to finish poorly. Iron Age bettered the existing record by stopping the clock at one minute 09.37 seconds.

There were five horses in the fray for the 2000 metres R J Kolah Trophy, a race for horses rated 80 and above. Pesi Shroff trained Northern Lights was the best on current performance but since a raw apprentice in Bhosale was astride the horse, the odds drifted out from alarmingly, with almost all horses in the fray being in the betting. The least preferred horse was Imtiaz Sait trained Truly Epic, the eventual winner as stablemate Caprisca was the preferred horse. Another of Pesi Shroff`s trainees Chopin who had finished third in the Indian Derby but since then had gone off the boil, led the field followed by last start winner Kamaria, Northern Lights, Caprisca and Truly Epic. Bhosale got busy at the top of the straight and the prolific performer steadily gained ground and shot ahead by the final furlong. Northern Lights shaped like a winner even as Truly Epic was gaining ground under a hard drive by jockey Anthony Raj. Just when everyone was reconciled for the victory of Northern Lights, the horse slackened and the apprentice was not able to get something extra. Truly Epic got the better of Northern Lights in the dying strides of the race and won by half a length. Though Northern Lights lost in the end, apprentice Bhosale should be complimented for riding a confident race. He should improve with experience. Caprisca ran on to take the third slot ahead of Chopin. Kamaria was completely outclassed.

Sanjay Kolse trained Toussaint recorded an encore with a late rally in the 1400 metres Sport Ex Consultancy Trophy (Div I), a race for horses in the lowest category. Toussaint lacked early speed and looked to be in a spot of bother as he was not getting a clear run along the rails and considerable leeway to make up. However, jockey Neeraj Rawal managed to get his way through in the final furlong. The progeny of Buratino finished with a rattle to snatch the verdict in the shadow of the post. Antia trained Luminosity who had received good support despite having no current form, and led in earnest in the final furlong but was overhauled by Dalasan who overcame a lethargic start and shaped to pull off another upset win. However, his hopes were put paid by the late charge of the lesser fancied runner. Anoushka too made ground in the closing stages of the race to finish third ahead of the favourite. After the victory of Toussaint in the upper division of the race, Narendra Lagad trained Daulat Mai winning the lower division of the race became bright. Daulat Mai had run behind Toussaint at Pune and looked far superior against the inferior lot of horses she was taking on. Jockey Mustakim Alam raced the favourite three horses wide into the straight as Intense Belief led the field. Daulat Mai easily overhauled the front runner by the final furlong and sped away to win by a widening margin of six lengths to provide the apprentice jockey with a double for the day. Intense Belief stayed put in the second position while Toofan ran on from behind to edge past Midas Touch to save place money.

Half-brother to celebrated sprinter Enigma, Lazarus from the stables of trainer Pesi Shroff made a smashing debut in the 1200 metres Sir Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy (VI Bart) Trophy (Div I), a race for maiden two-year-olds. That Lazarus had been well prepared to make a winning debut was also reflected in the short price quoted for his success. After Sloane Square led the field into the straight, Lazarus cruised past the front-runner well before the final furlong and sped away to record an impressive win by five lengths in the hands of jockey Pradeep Chouhan. Waikiki ran on from behind to sail past the long-time leader Sloane Square to get the runner-up berth. Alexandros who was sluggish at the start made ground in the straight to finish fourth. The benefit of a race run stood the Dallas Todywalla-trained Irish Gold in good stead. In the hands of jockey Trevor Pate, Irish Gold led all the way and won untroubled from She`s A Teaser and Believe, the lower division of the race. Irish Gold maintained a healthy lead of about four lengths from the beginning and retained that margin till passing the winning post. Favourite Eaton Square who was backed strongly to win ahead of Nirvana were both never in the hunt.

Altaf Hussain trained Mozelle had run way below expectations last time out at Pune when entrusted to an apprentice. By virtue of that poor performance, Mozelle ran at lucrative odds, with the betting concentrated on Shiraz Sunderji trained Menilly to go one better on her second behind stablemate One Wish at Pune. Jockey Neeraj Rawal took Mozelle on a start-to-finish mission and the progeny of Roderic O`Connor had no problem in staying put in front to win with a great deal of ease from eight-year-old Gazino who hasn`t won a race for more than 1200 days. Menilly was never in with a chance and struggled to pick up speed and finished a poor third.

Narendra Lagad trained Coeur De Lion had run well in the superior company in terms races and as such, he towered over the opposition in the 1600 metres M N Nazir Trophy, a race for horses rated 40 to 66. Backed to the exclusion of the rest, Coeur De Lion ran all alone in front, untroubled by any of the runners, enjoying a break of more than six lengths all through the race. Coeur De Lion eventually checked in by a widening margin of six lengths in the hands of apprentice jockey Mustakim Alam. Django ran on to finish second ahead of Zarak while Aah Bella, the second favourite, ran without hope.
