Juliette simply too good in Eclipse Stakes of India

  February 5 , 2023

Karthik Ganapathy trained Juliette steamrolled the opposition that dared to take her on in the Gr 2 D & A Realty Eclipse Stakes of India, a terms race for four-year-olds and over, one of the highlights of the Indian Derby day programme held on Sunday. Two of the nine races were scheduled to be held under lights but the last race of the day had to be cancelled as the visibility became very poor and the jockeys expressed their apprehension resulting in the last race of the day being called off.

Juliette had bounced back to winning form after a couple of dismal performances at Pune following her return to action from a setback. As such, she was quoted at miserly odds to win the race with Forest Flame who had beaten her at Pune being offered at long odds. Blazing Bay set a hot pace with Forest Flame in second position while Juliette was relaxed in the rear group. Sandesh got busy on Forest Flame at the final turn and gradually took charge of the proceedings. Forest Flame could not sustain her lead the moment C S Jodha set alight the small made Juliette to stretch out. The grey seven-year-old mare produced her patented burst of speed and easily overhauled the front-runner and drew clear of the field despite veering out of a straight course. Forest Flame stayed on to take the second position ahead of Truly Epic.

Juliette will be bidding for the second success in the Indian Turf Invitation Cup at Bangalore having won the last year`s edition at Chennai besides being unlucky on two other occasions at Mumbai and Mysore. Juliette no doubt will be most fancied but it remains to be seen whether she would be capable of giving weight and a beating to her younger rivals. Juliette has already logged several miles in her career and will be taking on those with fresh legs.

Pesi Shroff trained Emperor Roderic won the 1200 metres Coromandel Gromor Milion, a race for horses rated 60 to 86, in a record timing of one minute 09.342 seconds. The record came about because Arcana, Cellini and Son Of A Gun went at a scorching pace in front with Emperor Roderic settled in the fourth position. After the pace setters packed up in the straight, jockey Umesh pushed Emperor Roderic to take charge. The well supported Emperor Roderic assumed command by the final furlong and had no problem in disposing of the challenge of the others in the fray. Rafaello took the second position, nosing out Magiletto.

Dallas Todywalla trained Ahead of My Time who had gone down fighting in a tight finish to Supernatural was the favourite at cramped price to oblige in the 1600 metres Diego Rivera Rusi Patel Trophy, a race for four-year-olds and over. Coeur De Lion led the field into the straight and weakened. Jockey Pradeep Chauhan who had Northern Lights handily positioned, was quick to seize the advantage in the straight to hit the front and establish a good cushion over Ahead of My Time. Though the latter made a desperate effort to catch up, Northern Lights had enough legs to stay put and won the race with a measure of comfort. Coeur De Lion put up a dogged resistance but was headed at the post by the favourite Ahead of My Time.

Dallas Todywalla trained Irish Gold proved his superiority in the 1400 metres Gr 3 Sir Homi Mehta Breeders` Produce Stakes, a terms race for three-year-olds. Up and coming jockey Saqlain kept Irish Gold in a handy second position as Endurance did the pace setting. Irish Gold smoothly went past the front-runner at the top of the straight and broke into a big lead and won without coming under pressure. Favourite Sea The Sun who graced the wrong end of the field, rallied well in the stretch but the front-runner was too good for comfort. Dream Alliance ran on to take the third position ahead of Waikiki, both of whom were also in serious betting.

Pesi Shroff trained Jamari who had run more than 10 lengths behind the winner in her debut run, smashed the opposition winning the 1600 metres Usha Stud Million, a terms race for three-year-olds in spectacular fashion. Jamari showed tremendous improvement taking charge of the proceedings within the first furlong and then had command of the race all the way to the post, winning by a widening margin of seven lengths over Dreams of Fortune. Granpar who was strongly fancied to win was at the wrong end of the field, conceding too much ground to those in front and his rally in the stretch could only fetch him the third position nearly 10 lengths adrift of the winner. Jamari appears a good type of a youngster.

After an eye-catching second behind Portafino Bay, A M Jadhav trained Fighton looked good enough to win the 1200 metres B K Rattonsey Memorial Maiden Million, a race for three-year-olds. N S Parmar had some difficulty in restraining Fighton from running freely in front but once the three-year-old gelding settled into a rhythm, there was no stopping the favourite from winning with authority. The General ran a fair second ahead of Dream Seller. The General should strike before long.

Altamash trained San Salvatore brought off a king sized gamble when the five-year-old gelding raced freely in front in the 1400 metres Race2win.com Million, a race for horses rated 20 to 46 and skipped clear and won with a measure of comfort over the late rallying Inamorata. Lord Fencia was third.
