NRI Doublepower wins in comprehensive fashion

By: Tippu Sultan   February 12 , 2023

Shashikanth trained NRI Doublepower won the 1400 metres Godolphin Barb Million, a terms race for three-year-olds, the feature event of Sunday`s Hyderabad races, with effortless ease. The progeny of Gusto came from last to first by the final furlong and stormed clear in the hands of jockey Imran Chisty to win in a comprehensive fashion. Hilton Sequeira trained Original Sin who was widely expected to record an encore and was backed to the exclusion of the rest, looked a beaten cause well before the race came to a boil.

Though NRI Doublepower was also an impressive winner on the last occasion, Original Sin carried so much hype that the progeny of Multidimensional ended up as the short-priced favourite. Golden Gazelle who had raced up with the field, had the lead going into the final furlong but could not sustain it under a relentless onslaught from NRI Doublepower and went down rather meekly. Lucky Zone was third. Original Sin was unable to cover the ground from behind and laboured to take the fourth position by a whisker over Planet Royale.

Cricketer turned racehorse trainer Anant Vatsalya who is enjoying a good run, led in his eighth winner of the season when China Town gave an assertive performance in the 1800 metres Saroornagar Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Backed spiritedly to bounce back to winning ways, China Town did not disappoint in the hands of Imran Chisty, by recording a comfortable win over the battling duo of Role Model and Golden Inzio. China Town moved up with powerful strides midway in the homestretch and tackled the front-running Role Model with ease and then shot clear. Role Model just about managed to keep the runner-up berth position from late rallying Golden Inzio.

Hilton Sequeira trained Miracle Mary benefitted from the good forward run while claiming the 1200 metres Mossy Bank Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Enabling, another horse from the stables of Sequeira which originally belonged to suspended trainer Laxman Singh, was the firm favourite. Hemping Vazra raced freely in front and led deep into the final 100 metres. Miracle Mary who responded well to the urgings of jockey Akshay Kumar, covered ground and managed to get the better of the front-runner in the shadow of the post. Splendour On Grass too finished on purposefully to edge out the long-time leader for the runner-up slot in the hands of jockey Suraj Narredu.

The power-packed riding of jockey Mukesh Kumar got the desired result for Waseem Ahmed trained Angel Tesoro who came from way off the pace to neck out favourite Its On in the dying moments of the race to win the 1200 metres Rising Star Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. Its On who moved with raking strides in the final furlong to get the better of long-time leader Sound Echo and shaped to win but the finishing burst of Angel Tesoro put paid to the hopes of the heavily supported runner. Favourite High Reward was never in the hunt. Mukesh conjured up another similar finish in Division III of the race on another Waseem Ahmed trained Desert Sultan. Mr Perfect who enjoyed an uncontested lead shaped to win but closer to home, had two horses coming from behind with menacing efforts. Desert Sultan responded well to the strong riding of Mukesh Kumar and lunged ahead on the post to snatch the verdict while Ayur Tej just about failed to pip Mr Perfect for the second place.

Donald Netto trained Trump Star obliged expectations in the 1200 metres Raja Bahadur Venkatarama Reddy Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 60 to 85. On the last occasion, Trump Star had been floored by the late dash of Stunning Force. This time out, Suraj Narredu waited with Trump Star in the second position well into the straight as Blissful did the front-running before getting busy and driving out the favourite to win with a measure of comfort from Carlisle and Maximum Glamour who both were involved in a photo for the minor placings.

Suraj Narredu was also successful with another Netto trainee La Mirage who made amends for the second behind Thanks. La Mirage was available at nourishing odds as Srinivas Reddy trained True Marshal was backed to the exclusion of the rest in the 1400 metres Auxiliary Cup, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Suraj Narredu took La Mirage to the front from the start and dictated a clever pace which suited his horse to the full. La Mirage had a good break over the rest as he took the final bend and then kept on expanding the same to win by a widening margin of five lengths. True Marshal struggled to pick up momentum and all that he could achieve was neck out Nightmare to emerge second best.
