High Command completes a hat trick in a splendid fashion

Vittal Deshmukh trained High Command completed a hat-trick of wins in splendid fashion, winning the Gr 3 1400 metres Deccan Bookmakers Association Alcock Arabian Million, a terms race for three-year-olds, the feature event of Monday`s Hyderabad races. High Command looked vulnerable at one time but jockey Saqlain did not panic and induced a second wind from the favourite who then skipped away to win by a margin of four lengths.

High Command led from the start with Windsor for the company. Saqlain may have been forced to go aggressive early in the start to stave off the horse which was stalking him. High Command stormed ahead and opened up a good lead. Inside the final furlong, High Command came under pressure from debutant Verrocchio who came up with a big run and drew level but petered out. High Command pulled out that bit extra to once again get the lead and eventually won by a widening margin of four lengths to underline the fact that he is one of the best first-season runners of Hyderabad as he gave weight and a thrashing to his opposition. Last start winner Brilliant Star was third.

In an absorbing finish, Ledo D`Silva trained debutant Livermore prevailed by a whisker in a three-horse finish of the 1100 metres Charon Plate, a race for maiden three-year-olds. Colt Pistol led from the start with Zadelle in the chase while favourite Livermore was settled in about the fourth position. Colt Pistol battled on resolutely in front even under a sustained onslaught from Zadelle with Livermore gathering steam down the final furlong. Even as Zadelle in the hands of Saqlain was getting the better of the front-runner in the final strides of the race, Livermore charged home in the hands of jockey Afroz Khan and necked out the battling duo in front. A neck and a nose were the verdicts between the first three runners. Livermore is a full sister to Stormy Ocean who the other day won a race over nine furlongs at Bangalore. Warwick who had run a forward race last time out was out of depth in this company.

Ravinder Singh trained General Atlantic has struck a purple patch this season. The five-year-old, despite not being an enthusiastic starter at the gates, has often overcome the tardy effort with his finishing efforts and on other occasions, been energetic from the gates. Favourite NRI Superpower shaped to win the race as he shot ahead inside the final furlong and established a sizeable lead but General Atlantic ran on strongly and managed to catch the tiring front-runner close to home. Royal Grace also ran on from behind to finish third.

Sequeira trained Alabama had let down expectations last time out but was spot on in the 2000 metres Mirza Zunnur Ahmed Memorial Cup, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Francis Bacon led freely in front even as Suraj Narredu preferred to keep favourite Alabama in the rear group, not perturbed by the runaway lead of the front-runner. Suraj moved swiftly approaching the final turn and the favourite covered ground on the front-runner rapidly and stormed clear of the rest by the final furlong to eventually win by a comfortable margin of two lengths over Miss Marvellous and Princess Daka.

Hilton Sequeira trained Pacific Command was nowhere in sight when the horses turned for home for the 1600 metres Onnu Onnu Onnu Plate (Div I), a race for horses rated 20 to 45. The well-fancied Pacific Command sprouted wings as it were as he came home with a huge effort in the hands of jockey Abhay Singh to win the race with a measure of comfort. Lady Danger nosed out the long-time leader Akash to pinch the runner-up berth. Abhay Singh also was successful on another Sequeira trained Sundance Kid on whom he packed punch in his finishing efforts as the lesser fancied runner came from a long way back to edge out Sucker Punch in the closing strides of the race to win the lower division of the race. Master Touch was third.

Till deep into the race, favourite First Class appeared to have a slim chance of landing the spoils in the 1200 metres Prince Pradeep Plate, a race for horses rated up to 25 as Exclusive Luck had a handy lead but closer to home, the favourite got into her rhythm even as the front-runner began to falter. This enabled the Dhannu Singh ridden First Class to snatch the verdict in the dying moments of the race. Space Time led the field into the final furlong when the second favourite Exclusive Luck surged ahead and opened up a lead which looked good enough to win as First Class was struggling and had considerable leeway to make up. However, the Magan Singh Parmar trainee proved equal to the task and justified the strong support received in the betting ring.

Saqlain drove out Black Opal to victory in the 1200 metres Gentle Spy Plate, a race for horses rated up to 25. Black Opal covered ground on those in front with a ground-saving effort along the rails and surged ahead inside the final 100 metres. Black Opal had enough cushion to see off the late flourish of Delhi Heights. Chica Bonita was third.
