Summer Night makes Governor’s Cup a pillar-to-post affair

By: Goldie Boy   February 23 , 2023

To say that trainer Bharath Singh`s 6/1 shot Summer Night (Dashrath Singh-up) won the 1,600m Governor`s Cup at the Calcutta races on Thursday , it will be an under-statement. The six-year-old complimented himself when he simply made short work the opposition. The Night of Thunder son settled himself up-front in the seven-horse field as the top-weighted meaty performer named Awesome One (Neeraj Rawal) settled right behind with The Protector (Imran Chisty) in a close striking position. It was inside the final furlong that Awesome One called it a day, leaving The Protector to do all the chasing but the length and a half cushion build up, right from the start by Summer Night, never came under threat.

Chisty, otherwise, had his day well planned. The much in demand jockey scored a priced treble to further strengthened his position at the top of the championship table. Starting off with a flawless victory of Regency Smile, in the 1,400m Sky Classic Handicap, the King Da filly, who had gone down to Delphini in her last outing, returned to the winning ways. In fact, Chisty boasts of winning four races, including three in a row during the winter season. Vijay Singh saddled the winner.

Chisty rode a well-judged race, on Nuatika, in the baby event, the 1,200m Red Chieftan Plate. Although, the outing benefit worked to the advantage of the Dandified daughter but Chisty exploited the early speed of the 5/2 favourite and converted it into a victorious gallop. In the same race, Vijay`s Aletta (Hindu Singh), too, enjoyed a run advantage but the Sir Cecil daughter had to settle for the second berth, never posing any threat to the winner. Trainer Vikash Jaiswal`s runner, Mahabala (Vinay Jaiswal) also demonstrated some speed, early in the race. The Speaking of Which colt may make his presence felt in a weaker maiden company. The Aashay Doctor`s odds-on favourite, Dance Along`s (Rawal), perhaps, needed this run. The favourite was slowly out of blocks.

Chisty`s third winner, Regency Gold from Rutherford Alford`s stable -- in the 1,100m Tug of War Handicap -- fell into the jockey`s lap, thanks to callous opposition. Trainer Suraj Shaw`s Ahern was the strong public choice but jockey P. Surya could have avoided matching strides with speedy Indian Tiger (Hindu) and thus paving way for Regency Gold`s victory.

Vijay, too, was among winners, three, to be precise. It was jockey Hindu Singh who helped trainer`s cause on other winners. Starting off with the victory of Beautiful, in the day`s opener, the 1,600m Flower Dust Handicap, the winning pair also notched up the 1,200m Top Most Handicap. If Beautiful found the going easy, after the fancied but tiring early leaders -- Chetak (Arman Khan), Reagan (Rawal) and Our Choice (app Tejeshwar) -- called it a day, Hindu`s never say die attitude, on the 6/4 strong fancy, Tycoonist, saved the day for followers of the trainer-jockey-combo. The horse was taken to a start-to-finish run and he lasted out to defy a dual challenge from Aashay`s Star Justice (Tejeshwar) and Vikash`s Lucky Chance (Vinay).

Everything went wrong for Aashay and Rawal combo during the afternoon. The trainer`s main hope in the seven-event card, a colt named Harvestime, just about went down to trainer Patrick Quinn`s fancied runner`s Dubai Gold who, however, could have won far more easily, had jockey Nikhil Naidu managed to keep a straight course and not let his horse shift out in the home straight. The third placed Thar, too, was unlucky as the Vikash-trained runner lost some ground at the start and still managed to place a bottled-up third.
