Satish Narredu trained Eternal Princess fought back resolutely after looking vulnerable to the challenge posed by favourite Amreli and recorded a narrow win in the 1200 metres Civil Services Trophy, a race for horses rated 60 and above, the feature event of Wednesday`s Mysore races. The six-race card was truncated owing to heavy rain which made it difficult to conduct the last race of the day and the same was postponed to be held as the first race of Thursday.
Amreli had been running fair races but had found it tough to make her presence felt in this category. She had run second to Ashwa Yuduvir at Bangalore and fifth to Peyo over seven furlongs. She was widely expected to make amends over the reduced trip of six furlongs. The speedy Eternal Princess who had finished second best to Aldgate led from the start but was under immense pressure to keep the lead in the final furlong as Amreli came home with a powerful burst of speed. Amreli briefly put her head in front but Eternal Princess, in the hands of jockey Vinod Shinde, fought back and managed to pull out that bit extra to record a hard-fought win. Michigan Melody ran on to finish third more than six lengths adrift.
Ramesh trained Tenali had gone down fighting to Ineffable and the latter had gone on to record an encore. As such, Tenali was expected to have a decisive say in the 1200 metres Ranga Family Cup, a race for horses rated 40 to 65. Spiritual Force threatened to spoil the party as the seven-year-old gelding shot ahead and had a useful lead in the final furlong. Tenali had some leeway to cover but responded to the urgings of Kiran Rai and finished with a flourish on the wide outside to snatch the verdict in the closing stride of the race. Real Show was third five lengths adrift.
Arjun Mangalorkar trained Angeles who had run second in her only outing at Bangalore proved too good for the field in the 1400 metres Indradhanush Plate (Div II), a race for horses rated 20 to 45), sparing a distance at the finish to Inexhaustible. Multisided and Angeles were both well backed in the ring but the former who was in touch with the front-runners, made no show in the homestretch, unable to change gears and plodded home, finishing down the field. Jockey Anthony Raj who raced Angeles in about the midfield till approaching the final bend, had his mount progress smoothly and ready to launch an assault on the front-running Flying Falcon and Inexhaustible at the top of the straight. Angeles cruised past the opposition and quickened so well that the others could not even hope to chase her shadow. Inexhaustible was second ahead of Twilight Fame.
The 1100 metres Shimsha Plate, a race for horses rated 20 to 45, produced a thrilling finish, with Sajid Quereshi trained Ineffable recording an encore. Last start winner I Can was widely expected to repeat judging by the enthusiasm in the betting ring. Aniket Karande took Ineffable on a start-to-finish mission and led the field into the final furlong. At this point, Ochre with apprentice Abhishek Mhatre essayed a strong challenge. Even as these two were fighting it out, I Can was produced on the wide outside with a big run by Kiran Rai. However, Ineffable managed to put her head in front at the finish with I Can finishing second best. Ochre was half a length behind the runner-up.
Narayan Gowda trained seven-year-old gelding Elite Agent who had been waited for over 600 days for an opportune moment to strike, was well backed to win the 1600 metres Penambur Plate. Michael Eshwer trained Udukai who had finished second best on the last occasion despite being slowly away was also in considerable support in the ring. Apprentice jockey Koshi Kumar who had kept Udukai in the mid group brought his horse into contention in the homestretch. The progeny of Tenth Star, Udukai despite drifting out of a straight course and racing on the edge of the grass track nevertheless proved good enough for Elite Agent who made a big run down the middle. Udukai spared a length at the finish to the favourite. Game Boy was third six lengths adrift.
